When you look into the puddle, are you looking at your reflection - or is the reflection looking at you? One day, you stare into the puddle... and your reflection briefly smiles before a ripple along the surface washes it away. Now, every day, you sense the world isn't being completely honest with you. Before you know it, you're discovering that more and more familiar things are going missing: minor trinkets, clothes, furniture... even people. Next thing you know, you can't even confirm if your memories of them are true or false. Then people around you talk as if they know something but won't say what it is.
That's when you start to hear him. That voice in your head. The apparition that appears to you every day when you're alone. His name is Gnaeus Dargos... and he has a proposition to make.

On very, very, rare occasions there may be unexplained, POSSIBLY supernatural events. Minor "environmental" magic. Perhaps implies the existence of a deity or supernatural entity. Or perhaps it's just tricks?
Near future, perhaps cloning and genetic manipulation
Unrest may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat may be summarized.
