I was just wondering if it was weird to have crushes on RP characters. I know, you're probably "back" clicking right now. But I'm serious. I'm curious as to what everyone has to say about on such an odd topic.

I don't think it's weird. Same thing as having a crush on a TV/Anime/Movie character. I've done it a lot.
Just make sure it doesn't cross the line into OOC or it gets awkward. But that usually doesn't happen if you clearly understand the difference between player and character.

seems no different from fundamental attraction to me -- in a rp you're presented with the idea of a person who is fit, has common interests, qualities and traits we've been conditioned to find attractive through cultural and evolutionary factors; they're portrayed with endearing, funny, similar outlooks in life. and other traits like love, intelligence, honesty, loyalty.
in appearance and personality characters are often idealised version of ourselves and that stems from the desire of being attractive, popular, etc. we capitalise on our good qualities and build ourselves on a cultural ideal, find a way to work our witty remarks in a character. it's an image you can control.

I'm going to jump right on in here because...I can.
I don't think it's weird to have a crush on an RP character. Why do we RP? To live out fantasies - among several other reasons. I'm not ashamed to say I become very attached to RP characters, both mine and others. And I've cried over the events of an RP. I've sat down and cried my little eyes out, laughed myself silly, ranted with a character...and I find none of this weird. It's like sitting down and reading a good novel, becoming attached to the characters, laughing with them, crying with them, growing with them. The difference is I get to write the story and there's just nothing better in my mind. So, is it weird to have a crush on an RP character? That's a huge, resounding no!

All my characters are, in a way, facets of my own personality and struggles, so it would be weird if I developed a crush on one of my own.
On the other hand, if that's true of other people's characters as well, then I suppose having a crush on someone else's character would be just as natural as having a crush on a real person, since they're both in essence the same.

This, 80 billion times. On the other hand, I also have a bad (or good?) habit of giving my characters deep flaws. Sometimes hidden, sometimes obvious. These flaws are ALSO parts of my personality. One of the reasons I rp in particular is to try to help come to terms with the good and bad parts of myself--if those parts, even magnified, can find acceptance, then I am assured that I can, too.
It's not weird to develop a crush on an rp character, though. I personally haven't because one real life relationship made me a horrible, bitter person, BUT I don't mind shipping.
I think one of the most obvious ways people crush on characters is by making canon characters from shows or books etc.
I don't think it's weird to have a crush on a character. I myself sometimes dream of senpai finally noticing me. We all experience it from time to time.
I kinda have to echo was some other people were saying... it's not bad. It's just... gotta be careful with crossing the lines between OOC and IC.
But I have to agree with Ben... for me it's more... I ship things really hard than I personally develop feelings for a character.
(I secretly ship Throthgar and my character Elysia really hard)

Oooh good luck with senpai! They seem like a keeper
I'm going to be honest, I had an crush on an OC before I even knew what shipping was. Nowadays, I just ship hardcore o3o

throthgar is my waifu and nobody is gonna tell me otherwise
lyingsmile, i'll fite u
At first it struck me as a little odd to develop a crush on an rp character or persona, but then I remembered people develop attachments to fictional all the time - it's happened to me, it'll happen to you.
As long as it doesn't become worship or blurring the mine between the character and the person behind it, there's probably no harm in it.
This has also been a very interesting topic to follow, the responses are pretty thought provoking.

I'll fight u for his right to fall in love with my OC! *growls playfully*
I think this is really common for a lot of RPers, or even just people who are very passionate about their favorite characters.
Sometimes it's a slow crush, you play through and realize you've developed a soft spot for that character. Or it's crush at first crash, and the second you got their basic outline you know they are your type, and you are done for lol.
I guess for some it may come down to they define the feeling they have. Perhaps they would be more comfortable saying the feeling is more of a strong bias versus a romantic inclination? Either way, I think 'emotionally attached' is a good catch all.
