@TaintedCaribou, I would never sneak around my mom for something this important. I got up the guts to tell her about my consultation, with the promise afterwards that I would take time after the consultation, once a design has been decided on, to pen something like it on my wrist and have it for a week to make sure I'm cool with it there. I think she was satisfied with that compromise.
@Sanne.... I'm sorry your dad was such a jerk xD But that link just solidified my decision. My previous comeback for her argument on how it's going to look when it's older was that the rest of you doesn't exactly look nice either, so you won't even care! But those old people are totally rocking the tats. I'm completely satisfied with getting mine now.

Hey guys!
I am very seriously considering getting a tattoo, and I wanted to hear from anyone who's already had the experience! I was initially planning to do my finger but it sounds like those fade really badly, so I'm leaning towards the inside of my wrist. As far as what to get, I have a couple ideas that I've been thinking of as potentials for a couple years now, but I want to hear from you guys; what should I know about getting a tattoo? Any advice on my choosing where and what?
Thanks!

I have a bunch of tattoos. Most of both of my arms, a couple on my wrists, and a particularly large, painful piece on my ribs/sternum/stomach.
Aside of choosing a tattoo you think you won't dislike or regret later - because that's totally up to you, you know yourself better than we do -, I have a few words of advice.
1.) Don't go cheap on tattoos. If the shop doesn't have a minimum of around $100, don't go there. You really get what you pay for with ink. If it's cheap, it'll look cheap.
2.) Look into artists very well. Do your research. What style of tattoo are you looking to get? Do you want a custom piece or flash? Do they have a good portfolio that shows off their skills? Do they do linework well? Coloring? For custom pieces, are they balanced? Do they know how to fit a tattoo well on different parts of people's bodies? There's a lot to consider with artists.
3.) Don't show up on an empty stomach or intoxicated. Don't eat right before either if you're prone to nausea or a very pukey person, haha.
As for finger tattoos, I've seen them done very well. My hands are the next spot that'll be tatted up and I'm honestly super excited. I know a lot of people who've gotten them at reputable shops and with proper aftercare, applying sunblock and things like that, they haven't faded or warped. The ages of these tattoos are between 2 years and 15, so it's possible to have a good finger tattoo - just try to do the tops of your fingers rather than the sides. You want minimal friction, so try and avoid rings on those fingers, too.
That said, any spot where the tattoo machine will be over bone is going to hurt. Other painful spots are the inside of your upper arms, sensitive places like your stomach, arm pits, uhh... But I mean that's subjective. I don't think tattoos hurt in a bad way. It just feels kind of hot and pokey to me. I also have a ridiculous pain tolerance though, so there's that.
What should you know? All of the above, how to care for your ink properly, and make sure you find a shop with good hygiene practices and stuff like that. My artists all use new needles and open them in front of me. They also make their clients sign a bunch of paperwork and disclose their HIV/Hepatitis status and keep it for future reference.
And be aware you'll probably want more after you get the first one.
(I know this is a few days old but) minimum prices vary by location. I paid $60 for a well known artist that's in my town, does awesome work. I've had mine (probably about 2 1/2 quarters high or so on the inside of my upper arm) since Feb 22 (got it for my 18th) and it turned up REALLY well. I made a mistake of putting too much ointment on it (a&d maybe? Some baby ointment?) And it faded a little, but I also messed with it as it peeled. Just need a touch up.
Wow, where has the time gone?
Thank you ALL for your input and advice! I don't think I ever truly commented a final verdict on this.
My tattoo appointment is scheduled for tomorrow (Wed 29)!! I found a very reliable artist; friends know him personally (he has his own reputable shop and such), and they can swear by his clean shop and good work. I also checked out the reviews for him and his shop and checked the website, and they were all great. Very praising. He is also giving me an amazing price! I'm not sure whether it's because I'm friends of his friends or not; I've heard most artists charge by the time spent in the chair, and he said I won't be there for very long; probably a half hour absolute tops. I'm getting a word on my wrist with some detail design around it. For the word alone it'll be about fifteen minutes, so the detail around it shouldn't take too much longer.
I'm very excited! But I'm also a bit nervous x3 I always get nervous right before something big happens, whether it's graduation, a musical I'm in, or in this case, getting a tattoo!
I'm definitely keeping Sanne's advice in mind of a good night's rest, hydration, and a good meal beforehand. If you all have any advice for something to help me before I go in (for pain I'm thinking maybe I'll take some ibuprofen before I go), or any advice on after-care, that would be awesome. I'm sure he's probably going to give me the low-down when I'm there, but it's still nice to hear from you all as well!
Thanks for your help! I really appreciated all of your input in this decision. I'm SO excited! I'm the first one in my whole family to get a tattoo, though, so it's also a little intimidating. I just have to stay positive and not let my mom's worry-thoughts freak me out Mothers. Lol.
As for mom, she's been...okay, with this. She's mainly worried that 'omg you'll have it forever what if you regret it?' Which, is not really a problem in my case. I'm not getting some private joke or meme picture tattooed on me; it's a word, the word 'create', and that is something I'm passionate about. I can't see a point in my future where I would ever want to stop creating, so why would I regret the tattoo? (my main concern might be just keeping it healthy and not getting infection/disease. Heh. The unpredictables of life, as it were).
No matter what, though, I'm really excited about this and I will proudly post a picture once I'm able to. Thank you all again!

My sister made the design for me and the artist tweaked it a bit to make it work. I love it so much!!

That looks FANTASTIC Celes!!
How did it go? Tell us all about it!

Congratulations.
It looks nice. Clean lines. The stylizing looks simple and fun... And the message, as you pointed out, something meaningful to you, therefore timeless. In short, I like it.
Welcome to the club.
As a warning, this may be your gateway drug, if you will. Most everyone I know (and believe you me, I know/have known a lot of people with ink) it never begins and ends with just one.

Thank you!!
It went REALLY well. He was super professional. He used all clean tools, new needles, etc. He was really chill and very comfortable. We chatted casually while he worked, and he charged me a really good price! It was so good that I decided to tip him 20%, and it still only came out to about 42$!
It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would, except for when he got up closer to my hand. Then it hit a pain level But my dad was really impressed, he came along with me. And my family has all really liked it!

I've got one of the Goron Symbol from The Legend of Zelda on my left upper arm. It didn't really hurt. The feeling was more of an annoyance, if anything. Other than that I want to get more. But you should make sure it's something you really want to spend the rest of your life with because you'll be stuck with it. Lol.
