Chris let a curse slip and then backed out of the car. He grabbed the AutoWrench and then with a liberal amount of grease went to work on the gearshaft. After a moment, and a satisfying 'click'--which shouldn't have really occurred--he got CD into neutral. He collapsed into the seat.

"Alright, Clutch. Now we're ready to go."

Clutch beeped and pulled CD behind him with considerably more ease.

''What was the clicking?'' CD asked, looks bit worried.

"Your gearshaft," Chris muttered almost incoherently. "I'll have to fix it when we get back. Maybe I'll pick up some spare parts while we're at the gas station."

''So it has to be moved manually now?'' She snorted. Her engine starting to whine with no fuel running through its pipes.

"Well...yes. For now." Chris sighed and then felt them come to a halt. "Now what?" He peered out of the window to see they had come to the gas station. "Oh, we're here. Good."

He jumped out to gas up CD and Clutch as well for good measure. "You can both take a carwash if you'd like," Chris told them, when they were done gassing up.

''I can't really go anywhere with my gearshaft brokended.'' CD retorted.

Chris sighed. "Right, I'll be right back." He went into the gas station shop and looked for the parts he would need. He came back a few minutes later, glad he still had the screwdriver and auto wrench with him.

"Alrighty give me five minutes and I'll have you ready to go." It really was an easy matter of getting rid of the rusted part and reattaching the manual knob portion. "Alright, try it now." Chris had made sure to liberally oil everything so that it would glide easily.

CD shifts the gears into order, without it getting stuck. ''Yay!'' She exclaimed.

54 snorted, her core crackling loudly.

Chris nodded. "Alright, now the carwash. Enjoy."

Clutch pulled forward with a happy beep. "Carwash! What's up, 54? Aren't you happy?"

''Your getting washed, I'm just a core in you.'' 54 replied harshly.

CD rolls forward a bit. ''If we only found that AI plane...''

"What AI plane?" Chris asked. "Can you describe it?" Perhaps he could ask around for it. Although if it was a spy plane, chances were it would be in the hands of the government.

''It's a large craft with six eyes and huge wings. A huge passenger jet converted into a war fighter with an amber core, a core containing prehistoric critters.''

"Prehistoric creatures? Do I even want to know what kind?"

Clutch shuddered, overhearing the comment. "I couldn't stand having anything strange in my core..."

''Well, the energy in the core powers the massive craft. Or it used to. The core got buried at the beach when the jet was shot down over the ocean and sunk.''

"Right," muttered Chris. "And I'm gonna guess that grabbing a metal detector isn't going to help when it's crystal or amber or whatever gem they decided to use."

Clutch already entered the carwash, but he overheard enough to call back his own comment. "Why not use our AI sensors to find it? If it's working, we should be able to pick up the frequency."

''The cores buried pretty far. Thers a crater at the impact zone. Who'd be digging?''

"Oh, that would be harder to find then," Chris said. "In that case we'd have to call in a construction group or something. Maybe an excavation group, depending on how far down it is."

''From this station my scanner is detecting the cores signal, but it's about 8 miles east to the shore. Along with what seems to be a metal box around. I can tell by that that someone was hiding the core when it got thrown out.''

"You don't happen to know how far down into the earth it is, do you?" Chris inquired.

The carwash was nearly about over, a lavish coat of suds, followed by high-pressurized water sprays, followed by squeegees and a dryer, before ending with a nice coat of wax for a polished shine.

Clutch was done, glistening in his proper red color and preening under the attention of any who cared to glance in his general direction.

CD would have drove in, but was greatly hesitant remembering her encounters with water.

''About 20ft down, if my calcuations are correct.'' She inquired.
