My advice is that you lurk about for a while before you feel a little less intimidated At least that's what I did when first joining.
Also, I'm shy about my characters - it made me more comfortable to have them all unlinked from my player profile. This is a setting you can choose when you're creating a character - just choose "played anonymously" on the very first screen. It's also great if you want to experiment with the character profile before going public with it!
