She nuzzled his hand, sniffling. The rune on her shoulder was still pulsing warm.

Murat wasn't sure what more he could do, but when Jasafar lay down with a sigh and some hay, he did the same next to Cassandra.

He gently stroked her fur, feeling a surprising warm spot on her shoulder. "Cass..." He started when he realized it was the rune.

''What is it?'' She replied, the rune still pulsing warmly. It was barren of fur, but felt like rocks.

"Your rune, does it--do you feel any different right now?" Murat inquired. "It just feels warm, is all."

''Whats a rune?'' She asked, looking confused and puzzled. ''I feel fine, just upset over my father..Dieing.''

"It's a...symbol, specifically of the desert, that's on your shoulder. I guess you can't see it, but it looks like this." He drew the image in the sand at his feet.

Hassan kicked sand over it with a glare at Murat. "Be careful, Murat. Drawing runes is tempting magic we don't understand to use us as vessels whether we're able or not."

A small pointy rock did spring up from the scribbled rune before it was covered up, and Cass yowled, flinching out of it's way rather fast.

Murat too took a step back, surprised. "I-I did not know. Then how is it that Cass sports a rune on herself without drawing rocks?"

Hassan shrugged. "Cassandra, why don't you try to move some sand? Maybe it'll work."

Cass looked at the sand, then tried to move it. The movement of the sand shifted into a tiny sand snake that lashed out at Hassan.

Hassan jumped back from the snake. "What was that?"

Murat grinned. "Was that you, Cassandra?"

''Yes...'' She said, watching it crumble away into harmless sands lumps.

"Incredible," Hassan breathed.

Murat nodded and then softly stroked Cass' shoulder. "You feel okay?"

''Dizzy, but fine. Why do I have a rune?''

"Because you're a sand lion, probably," Hassan pointed out. "Your father probably had one too, though I have no idea where his was." He paced around the statue, as though the rune might still be etched into the sand lion's former self.

Eerily the same rune was still etched into her dads statue, on hid forehead. A rune standing for earth and the sands it held, an odd rune that few lions possessed. Earned only by time.

"Found it," Hassan called, pointing. "Seems that location varies, but I'm not sure whether its due to age or power or something else entirely."

''Daddy said that the sands of time had erased his youth. Maybe that was a hint.'' She pondered. ''He was very old, but he only used his power to help us.''

"Well, I'm glad for the latter," Murat breathed. "I'm sure though that your talent with the rune and sand magic will grow each time you try working with it."

Hassan nodded. "Erased by the sands of time...sounds frightening to me. What else could it erase?"

''Maybe time chooses who weild its powers?'' She said, frowning. ''Time knows no boundaries, nor does it stop for anything.''

"And yet it has a beginning and an end--though it stretches on seemingly infinite at the present." Murat shook his head. "If it does choose who wields the power, then you should be honored to have been chosen."

Hassan nodded. "Though we don't know the cost of using such power, I suppose that turning into a statue might as well be the result of using and harboring such power."
