''One of Earth, and one of land.'' Hissed something before a well groomed lioness with wet sand wings walked out from a pillar, once undseen. ''Forces that seperated us made us one, a lion that was spawned from a sand bird. Yes, water sand lions exist, but it is I that ca,e with the statue here. That lion there was with the founder, and so was I. But I was forgotten.'' It sneered, fur matted down with a pale water rune on it's hind legs.

Cass yelped, and hid near Murat.

Murat blinked and took a step back, nearly stumbling over Cassandra when she hid behind him. Hassan, even, started and turned in surprise.

It was the priest who seemed unfazed and bowed before the newest sand lioness. "Forgive us; we have lost many records from our founder and we had only the one statue to rely on."

Murat found his voice. "If you are as old as the founding of Madeena, how is it that you have survived?"

''Water does not age as sand does, it only sours.'' She hissed as the statue turns into water, but keeps it's shape. ''I was dismissed as a ghost, a phantom. But I live, yet scolded for being the runt of a litter. Sorrow only goes so far!'' The water lion yowled.

"Forgive us," begged the Priest. "We are still learning and the sand lions are not as numerous as they once were."

Hassan reached out to try to 'pet' the water. "We can't change the past, but we can always change the future."

The water was cold and harsh, unforgiving.

''This city rests above the oasis that the first water lion made to quemch the thirst of the founder. He died shortly afterwards, still by her side.''

Hassan snatched his hand back, looking down at it with surprise. He'd never felt such coldness before.

"Where were you in all that?" Murat asked. "Did you do anything to help them?"

''I was a kit, too young to try to save the water lion founder. He died of illness, and he was my grandad.''

"Is that right?" Hassan murmured, scratching at his scruffy beard. "I wonder if you know where the other Sand Lions are? For that matter, have you been here all this time?"

''Some idiot covered me up behind a wall!''

The Priest didn't even flinch. "This temple has been standing for several hundred years."

Murat sighed and rubbed his head. "If you were a kit, they probably didn't even see you to know you were back there. How did you survive for so long?"

The lion gave Murat the most stupidest look, water dribbling out from her mouth and onto the floor. Could be why she was nearly bone, and the rune was faded.

"Oh." Murat shook his head.

The priest hurried away and came back with some food for the starved sand lioness.

Hassan sighed and sat down at the feet of the sand lion statue. "Alright, dumb question but, is it possible for a sand lion to have two runes?"

The starved sandlioness ate the food hungryly. ''If they were born to two differnt elements, yes. Why do you ask?''

Hassan leaned back until he was practically under the sand lion statue. "Because I think I see a rune under this sand lion's wing. It might just be dust though." He started to reach up to touch it, then paused.

The statue turns back into sand, and the dark spot falls away to reveal a rune for earth similiar to Cassadras. Clear as day, made of crystals.

Hassan pulled back. "Whoa, that's a first..."

Murat peered beneath the wing to get a look. "Looks just like Cass' run sure enough."

''This means that this sand lion was the child of water and earth...So this wasn't the first sand lion to exist?'' Cass asked, looking puzzled.

"Does that mean it was the cub to the first sand lions?" Murat inquired. "Were they sectioned into prides according to water and earth?"

Hassan grunted. "I suppose it depends on what you mean by 'the first sand lion'. And did they ever get along with sand birds?"

''The lions were ordered into groups. Those that wer Earth, those that were Sand, those that were Land and those thar were Water. It is natural that sand lions hated birds. Offspring only occured if the two got along well. But now the sand birds grow hostile, and the lions fear for theor lives.'' Hissed the water lion.

"Have they ever lived in peace?" Murat asked. "Can it go back to that? And at what cost?"

He looked at Hassan who frowned. "That's not good."
