A cataclysmic event has occurred, the magicians of the land are dubbing it"The Dark Horizon". A series of earth-quakes shook the land to it's core, ripping up land, altering oceans, changing the terrain as we know it. The planet you used to know has become a world of lush and dense forest, and cold taiga. Not to mention, the disappearance of the sun, and the moon being covered in a blue energy. Oh, also, mysterious black totems and temples of the ancient variety have been popping up across the land too, making nightmarish creatures, driving people who use magic insane if they get too close to them, and other stuff.
Also not to mention that the land is drenched in darkness and fog, yet plants continue to grow unharmed. Will you survive in this new world, or will you die from the darkness like quite a few other people in the deep dark?

Medieval with near the arrival of steam-power. You still got your bows, and maces, but you also have single-shot flintlocks, blunderbusses, that sort of stuff. Though they're not very recognized or well known.
