Hello Folks, I've never seen this post placed, but I'm going to make a poll and place a link here, you can go and submit to the poll and even do write in votes.

We're going to have categories, but I'm having trouble with them, any advice?

I have:
Most Compassionate Character
Most Likely to Die
Most Interesting Flaw
Most Interesting Power/Ability

I have other ideas but those are the ones that I recommend! LET ME KNOW :D
Dude this sounds awesome. Most interesting history. Coolest original character art. But I think it would be cool to have something for the players, most imaginative, most enthusiastic...stuff like that

I'm a little confused as to what is being suggested here... Do you mean a poll where players can nominate characters (and players by nikina's suggestion) in certain categories and have the community vote on their favorite?

If that is indeed the idea, I'm not certain if it's something we can do. We have the kudos system in place so you can leave awesome comments (and reasons why you like them) on characters and players alike! Kudos are often displayed on the Community page as well, so you could easily let them know you find the character compassionate and interesting. Other people will read that. :) (We <3 Kudopocalypse!)

The problem with a poll like this, is it's too much like a popularity contest. The chances of people feeling upset and hurt over not having their character/themselves nominated, or voted on, can lead to highly uncomfortable situations and even fights (or tears!). Even in a community as awesome as ours. We're only human after all!

If you have ideas like these that are a community-wide event, it's probably a good idea to run it by the mods/Kim first before you start working it out and setting it up, so we can make sure it's something we can fully support and help you with. Otherwise your hard work might go to waste, and that would be a shame. :(

Well I understand your point of view Sanne, but I don't think that the people are going to see this as a popularity contest as well, the Kudospocalypse has a similar feel, if you didn't have a ton of friends you didn't get or give many kudos. I also don't feel like this is the same as a Kudos, it's a way to find the things people like about your characters etc. There are also people on this site who do little to no role-playing all they do is spectate. I appreciate your concern, but I'm not sure that I agree with it.

I'm also lacking some context for what is being proposed here. Now that I'm more awake I think it's a play on the "Emmies"?

Sanne, it doesn't sound like he's asking for direct mod or admin support, or to have it be officially run at all. Sounds like something Jets wants to do himself!

How do kudos not show you what people like about your characters? ;)

I think the objection is that with kudos, multiple people can be told that they have awesome histories. With a voting contest, they get ranked and someone is told that theirs is Better and everyone else's isn't as good.

Yeah this is awesome! It's a way to put those who really give back to the community up on a high for a bit, I like the idea, and I don't think I've been here long enough to be considered for anything lol

I guess while I love the Kudos system and all, it would be cool to run an anonymous poll that would allow a few characters to earn some recognition as well the players that created and play them.

It's not so much about popularity it's recognizing greatness and rewarding it.

If it's about community participation, maybe categories like "Most welcoming to new players" and "Most helpful" for someone who spends a lot of time answering questions?

So my thing here is that I'm not looking for official support or recognition, that's fine. What I am looking for is people who would be interested in becoming part of the "Emmies" for characters and players.

I don't have direct conflict with Kudos, the system works for what it does, but they are comments, I feel like being able to put something like, "Most Creative Player 2012" on your page would be a fun little "Badge" of awesomeness. I also would like to do my best to make it as objective as possible, much closer to that of a democratic election. Kudos are great at telling your friends that you like something they did or just a general comment, This is more of an award system for those who have a revolving door of comments about the person they are, the characters they play, etc.

Again this is just an idea I'm not trying to take of the world here lol XD

I wasn't sure what was really going on! I thought if he wants to do something that involves the whole site though, it might be nice to have some help if he needed it. :)

Yep, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. :( Even if people's characters are voted on anonymously, being told the community thinks less of your character than X's character is not fun at all. I'm also not a fan of the player idea for the same reason.

"The most ..." indicates one person or character is better than everyone else, and in my opinion that's never what RPR has been about or should be about. Everybody gives what they can, in different areas and different portions, but everyone is equally as amazing and nice as everyone else. It would be unfair to the rest of the community to say "So and so was voted to be the most ..." in my eyes.

See now those are great categories! And I'm looking for input into what should and shouldn't be part of this things like, "Favorite Character on RPR" would be a bit too heavy handed, I wouldn't want to make any "Elite" categories like that necessarily, as well there could be multiple winners in a category. Just nominating someone for a category could get them a victory, not to forget "Honorable Mentions"

I get what you're saying, but I don't feel like I'm being giving a chance. We could change the wording as well we could open up the categories, and besides, only those who wanted to participate would, meaning that if you weren't picked that you would have known that from the beginning.

I can see both sides here. Of course we don't want to make anyone feel bad, but at the same time, there can be value in recognizing extraordinary effort. It can feel just as bad to put a huge amount of work into something and have it acknowledged the same amount as someone who put no effort into the same thing. It gets complicated, of course. Someone who has been at it for awhile or who has more mainstream tastes might get their work valued more highly than someone who is newer or odder but put in just as much sweat.

So yes, I have some of the same potential concerns. But on the other hand, we do run official contests, and people do get awarded first place or second place etc, and it's yet to cause anyone to melt down.

There's no rule against people setting up their own contests. There's also no rule against people making little badges for their friends' profiles. And it doesn't seem like the intentions here are anything but friendly. All I would ask is that the organizers try to keep people's feelings in mind as they choose their words in setting things up. :)

Thanks Kim. That's EXACTLY what I was thinking.

When I do get this down, I will make sure to run it by yourself and the mods for some advice. Thank you.
I haven't read through all the various comments that have been put up, but I notice there's some concern about people getting voted better than others.

While that's understandable, I feel like this could be a true learning experience. Maybe someone doesn't realize their character is a bit of a mary-sue until their character doesn't get many votes as 'unique' or 'creative'. To me, this could help each of us realize what we could do to make our characters better. It is a completely anonymous thing, which could help with the problem of telling someone to their face that their character is a mary-sue.

I think this would be pretty interesting for voting on various aspects of characters. It could really be a learning experience. As the creator, we all have extreme prejudice with our own characters, and often don't feel like there's anything wrong with them. But other people, other opinions, could reveal something. Maybe our character's back history doesn't match up with the way the character acts. Maybe the character is too 'mainstream' in the genre it's in. I think this could be a learning experience.
I don't have much real input, other than I used to do this with my best friends. We'd each list which characters we thought fit the category. Not from just our characters, but from them all as a group. It was fun and made for good laughs when some of it really, really synched up. It's like a high school year book thing.

Yeah I really like the idea of this being an annual type thing, it could be really useful as Celestina stated.

What I like most about this though is giving praise to those characters and players who have really done something spectacular to this world we play in, expanded it.

Welp, I discussed with you already a few categories that are balanced for everyone IMO. I really like this. I don't see any shame in encouraging people to make characters more standout in the field they want to have pride in, and when it comes down to it, it's all in good fun. I like that this community is friendly, but having a little friendly competition isn't bad or we'll all turn into marshmallows.
Whats wrong with marshmellows??? :D I love marshmellows, but I also think it is a great idea. It kinda reminds me of high school where people voted for people to 'most likely succeed' or 'has prettiest smile' just having words changed. It would be a good encouragement or also a motivation. As in 'I can get better at this if I try' thing or 'I didn't think my character was THAT good' it would be a fun thing to participate in though.

Marshmellows.... *Nom nom*

Thanks for the input, I'm thinking of doing this some time in October, sort of a polar to the site's birthday. Not sure yet though. Still looking for input :D
