Forums » Introductions » Hello everyone, ZrinX is joining the ranks!

Hi, I'm ZrinX. I'm a fairly new roleplay, I've done a couple roleplays but every time the other player tends to stop halfway through. I can understand that sometimes it just doesn't work out or people are busy. It's still kind of frustrating.

I also joined some other roleplay sites that were kinda lackluster, then I cam across you guys. From what I've seen so far, there's a strong sense of comradery. I really like that you adhere to a kind of moral code.

There are a few questions I would like to ask. I have a story in my head, a kind of continuity. In it there are seven main characters. You can think of it as a main character and six supporting characters or whatever. How impractical or annoying would it be if I used these characters in a roleplay? Would it be more difficult that I might imagine? If you were roleplaying with my seven characters, would you not find it fun or find it annoying? Is playing one character at a time more appropriate?

Another question is concerning OOC communication. Do you tack on your OOC statements in parentheses at the end or beginning of a post? Is there a separate topic for any OOC discussion pertaining to the specific roleplay or is it in post format in the roleplay topic?

One more question, where do you prefer to roleplay? Do you prefer here on the forums? Or on a group chat on Skype or some other messenger?

It's funny, I'm a chatterbox when I'm not roleplaying. When I'm in character though, I have to rack my brain to form a decent response. Does this happen to anyone else?

Wait, didn't I say one more question two questions ago? Guess that's out the window.

Since I'm on a roll with the question, I'll throw some more in, Just to test you.

I have a few ideas for roleplays. Since I'm new, would it be better to join others roleplays to get better before I start my own? Would one on one roleplays be easier for a novice or does it not really matter? How does a turn based system get determined? Does it go by when the players joined or is it specified by the OP? Are short term/one shot roleplays better for novices or does it not matter?

I think I'm out of questions now.

I've been wanting to write a story on my continuity for awhile now. I haven't really gotten anywhere as I'm not predisposed to writing, Im more of a musician. I hope that by roleplaying I can sharpen my writing skills from a baseball bat to a sword edge.

Oh, 'nother question. Should I post my lore/continuity? I don't think I should because it could contain spoilers. However it might make my character easier to understand. It contains the details of a mutagenic substance that creates monsters.

Well, I think that's it. If you have any questions for me, don't hesitate to ask because I sure as hell didn't.

I should also mention I'm furry trash. I don't know how relevant that is, but it might be good to know.

I think that depends entirely on who you're playing with and how often they're going to be involved in the scenes. We have a broad range of preferences among the userbase so it's just a matter of finding the right match for what you like playing. Most of my friends don't mind the involvement of multiple characters, though some frown upon it. Communication is the most important part of this, so just make sure to talk it over with any potential RP partners. :)

To avoid bumping down other active roleplay topics for non-RP chatter, it is generally encouraged to keep lengthy OOC discussions on an active RP in the RP Discussion forum or in private messages. If it's just a couple of messages of OOC chatter then you don't have to create an entirely new topic. Use your best judgment.

This is another very individual thing! I personally highly prefer RPing in private messages or closed groups (the ones on RPR), but there are lots of people who RP freely on the forums, other websites or messenger applications. :) Just ask your partner what they prefer or let them know what you prefer! RPs with mature content (like heavy swearing, gore/violence and sexual content) always need to be in private messages or properly labeled groups though.

Quite a bit! My characters are not necessarily a reflection of who I am and can respond differently to certain situations than I would. This means I sometimes need to think quite hard on what they say to avoid it making no sense. This is pretty normal.

The only way to find out is to give it all a try. There are no social or moral repercussions on this website to starting your own roleplay with a very detailed original setting, nor is there any objection to joining someone else's. :) We focus on having fun, and there's no real wrong way to do that. If something strikes your fancy I highly encourage you to give it a shot!

This is entirely up to you! Groups are excellent places to build worlds in because they have their own forums to RP in and are great containers for lore information. Having a group ready to link to can also be easier when you have multiple characters who exist in this world, and allows people to join it more easily. Definitely okay to do so if you want to.

Phew! I think I covered everything! :D Other people might have more input on your questions so keep your eyes peeled in case I missed some/many things. My question for you is, what do you like about roleplaying so much?
Hello and welcome to RPR! I hope you make lots of friends and enjoy your time here!
Hey ZrinX, welcome to RPR! :)

Welcome welcome! So pleased to meet you. :)

When getting started with RP, I really recommend this primer on basic RP concepts as a starting place. Even if you have some RP experience, it can be a nice way to see what the general norm is here.

We also had some community discussions awhile back about how to improve at RP.. I boiled them down into interesting articles for those who are interested. Here's a selection of my favorite ones:

Writing for RP
The responsibility of ALL RPers (getting this one right will generally make people sing your praises!)
And if you want to put a slightly more advanced technique in your back pocket for now and again: Using dice to enhance RP

Sanne covered all your questions already and I agree with nearly everything she said, so I won't repeat it all.

I do have a different suggestion about this one though:

I would say that if your partners are fine with it, go ahead and do all your OOC chatter directly in your RP thread. The IC boards are not really meant for browsing in the same way that most of the other boards are.

On the other hand, there's mixed feelings about whether to use the RP Discussion board for OOC stuff, since that is a highly public board that hundreds of people visit per day, and your OOC discussion of your RP will probably only be of interest to the handful of people that are in that RP. I would say that the ideal way to do OOC chatter that isn't in your actual RP topic is to take it to chat in Private Messages, where only the people actually in the RP will be seeing it and responding to it. :)
Hi ZrinX! Welcome to RPR!

I would probably enjoy RPing with seven characters, especially if they didn't all descend upon me within the space of single post :-) If that were the case, I would probably have ended up confused or not-so-interested in all of them. But with gradual introduction, and if they fit the narrative well, I don't think that would be a problem at all!

Personally, if I'm engaging in an in-depth RP, I always prefer to do the OOC talk in a separate topic. But if the RP is a less serious one with shorter posts and less immersion that could be broken, I'm more than happy to talk OOCly in parentheses before or after the RP posts.

I RP here on RPR, mostly in private messages. On the forums, I almost always worry about whether I'm PG-13 enough! XD

Don't worry about getting better before you start RPs of your own. I don't think that matters. Neither does the long- or short-termedness (I've just made up a word!).

Don't worry, you'll have a lot of chances to start RPs and if you're not happy with the result, you can talk to your partner to try and fix it or just end it and look for something else. That's perfectly normal.

I hope you'll have fun here! :D
Welcome to RPR! Juggling 7 characters at a time sounds like an interesting challenge! XD I can usually only bounce back and forth between 2-3 before I start to get worn out. I'm impressed that you can manage all 7 at once ^_^

Thank you so much for your very detailed response Sanne. To answer your question, roleplaying is a form of escapism for me. I can project myself onto my character and have him do things I could never do. You can also weave amazing stories, it's super cool!

I'm not yet familiar on the ins and outs of the forums and how to properly reply to posts. I'll figure it out though :).
Hey ZinX!

Welcome :D I've joined quite recently too, so you're not alone in the newbie corner!

I feel like a lot of people have already responded to your questions, so even the ones I've worked out the answers to people have been kind enough to help you with! 7 characters is one hell of a lot, I take my hat off to you, friend :3

I'm sure you'll get the grasp of how things work over the next few days. I have to agree that I find RP as a great form of escapism too, so we've got that in common c:
