''So their name is Relan. Why should I eat them? They said that I was an excellent ally!''

Sterling rolled his eyes and winced as his headache spiked. Rubbing his face gently he grimaced. "Relan would do anything to get you on his side. But God help you if you get on his bad side. As long as he can use you, you might be okay."

Sterling reached for the pendant that usually hung by his neck and came up empty. He scowled and dropped his hand. "I haven't seen Relan for years now, so there's no telling what he might be up to."

''Even if I did see him, he said he could do everything better than you. That vampires fell just by him looking at them.''

The comment startled a laugh from Sterling. "Just by looking, aye. The man works with a team, he dare not work alone for fear that his prowess won't be enough."

But he winced as his face throbbed.

''Well, he said he was going to some place called the Danger Vault to hunt down a family of vampires in there. That was about 7 weeks ago, to my knowledge.''

Sterling shrugged. "I've not heard of a place like that. If it's what I think it is, though, then it's no wonder he wanted your help. I'll bet he encountered some Master Vampires there."

He paused and a pained expression crossed his face. "Does your link, or whatever, continue in the off chance he's turned into a vampire?"

''Well, yea. Though I doubt it'll work correctly. It's very fragile..''

"Then there's hope yet." He sighed. "Is he the one who gave you that pendant? Or is that from someone-thing else?"

''He gave it to me!'' Dark hissed. ''He also said that a monster that looked like a mutated gerbil was in the vault with the vamps.''

Sterling sighed. "I have no idea what a mutated gerbil demon would be except trouble. So many demons, so little time. Be best if he just didn't return though."

Pause. His face was still warm though the immediate pain was ebbing and a dull ache took over. "Did you really have to hit me so hard?"

''Do you want me to slash your face to peices?'' Dark hissed, eyes still bloodshot.

Sterling raised his hand, the other closing on the sword hilt by his side. "No. No I much rather not lose an eye to an ill-timed nail in the face. Thanks."

''Then stop whining. A true hunter treats his scars as prizes!''

"An excellent Hunter avoids them altogether," muttered Sterling in reply, though amused. He glanced over at Hybrid. "You hanging in there, Elder?"

Elder flinched, hissing, then looked at Sterling. Pupiless eyes.

"Now what?" Sterling asked, suddenly realizing once again that he was the sole Hunter around two demons.

Elder started to swipe at Sterling, as Darkness quickly pulled out a tranq spear and handed it to Sterling.

Sterling didn't even hesitate. He dodged the swipe and then stabbed Hybrid Elder just enough to get the tranq into his system.

"Thanks," he muttered, feeling a sting over his eyebrow--evidence he hadn't dodged fast enough.

Elder hissed in pain and fell over, holding his side. The bandages there started to well up with blood. Elder wavered, cringing, and lookimng at Sterling as he slowly passed out.

"Sorry, Hybrid," he told the bladed creature before dabbing at the injury above his forehead. "You're not, uh, gonna attack me either, are you?" He asked warily; not loosening his grip on the spear.
