Elder was in too much pain to reply, his mutant-y genes going wacko.
Sterling looked at Darkness. "I think we're good to go until we hit the marsh. But I'm not doing anything to Elder until he answers me."
He waited a moment, two, and then sighed.

1. He adds the ointment. 2. He waits.
As soon as the ointment touches the bite Elder yowls in agony and swipes at Sterling in a bout of pain-induced fury.
Sterling jumped out of the way of the slice, narrowly missing adding yet another injury to his partially healed ones.
"I'm trying to help you, Elder, sheesh." Under his breath he mutters something dark and then brushes off the lingering vampire ash on his trench coat. "Can you walk at least?'

Elder staggers to his feet, cringing a bit. ''Well, at least it won't turn me into a vampire..Right?''
Sterling shook his head. "No, it'll prevent anything like that from happening. Besides that, Day Walkers don't usually have that capability anyway. It's just Masters you gotta watch out for."
He slipped the ointment away, knowing he only had a few more uses for it before he ran out. "Let's hurry before full dark sets in or Day Walkers will be the least of our--Aaaugh!"
A strangled yelp escaped Sterling as something hopped across the path, splatting audibly enough that there had to be some amount of ooze involved.

''It's just a slime frog.'' As Elder hefted up the oozing fiend and held it up to Sterling. ''See? Nothing dangerous.''
Sterling backed up several paces and brought his sword up in front of him. "Do not bring that thing near me." The sword tip trembled, as did Sterling.
Elder steps forward with it, the thing now in Sterlings face. It croaked out a blob of slime and bugs. ''Seeee? It's a frog. Whats so bad about it?''
Sterling turned green as a glob of slime hits him smack on the nose and dribbles down his face. For a moment his pupils constrict and he doesn't react. And then he's on his knees, rubbing his face frantically.
"Get it off, get it off, get it off!"
"Get it off, get it off, get it off!"
Elder sets the frog down for it to go on it's merry way and shoves Darkness into Sterling. ''Use Darks fur?''
Sterling reeled as something hit him and then he had a faceful of fur. "Gah!" He stumbled back, landing on his butt, and stared up at Darkness.
The unfazed Hunter who could slay a vampire without even blinking, looked almost terrified. A smudge of ooze still on his face as he sat there, dumbly, available for any day walker who might be striding by. Fortunately, the nearby day walkers were already stricken and lay in piles of ashes, where they couldn't do any harm.
"Slimy..." he whimpered.

Dark grunts, then looks down at Sterling before he used one of his giant pawed hands to wipe the remaining ooze off Sterlings face carefully. The fur was rough, but smooth enough to feel like a rag. Sterling could feel every scrape and bump on the paw. Even saw that it was missing most of the claws on it. And the odd silver symbol for hell on the palm.
''Just pull yourself together and we'll make it through. Stop whimpering, Silver.''
''Just pull yourself together and we'll make it through. Stop whimpering, Silver.''
Sterling shivered beneath Darkness' giant paw/hand. But then he felt that the ooze was gone and he blinked and slowly recollected himself. He shuddered again at the memory of the ooze and then quickly stood up and wiped his face on the inside of his trench coat.
The symbol for hell that he'd seen was permanently engraved in his memory now; and not necessarily for the better.
"Di-did you just call me Silver?" He asked after a moment. "I told you, it's Sterling."

''If you insist on acting like a baby after seeing a frog of slime, I'm going to call you Silver!''
Sterling hesitated, glancing around for more slime frogs, before squaring off his shoulders, narrowing his eyes, and sheathing his sword.
"It's Sterling or I'll simply stand back and watch you two take on the Master vamps yourselves."

''And where the ones that helped you this far. If you abandon us, your abandoning the creatures that have helped you. Like you did to your hunter friends.''
Sterling twitched, his voice falling to barely audible levels. "I don't have friends. Only acquaintances. No one lives long as a Hunter, and Hunters don't make promises they can't keep. If you have a problem with that, you're free to do what you wish.
''Then me and Elder could attempt to be your friends if you'd look out behind you! Theres a thing charging at you!''

In hindsight, the charge had a rather curious gait to it. It wasn't the forward, sleek motion of a mutant hamster in full on sprint. Nor was it the bouncing glide of a mutant gerbil or a day walker. Rather it was a jerky, hopping movement that should have warned Sterling what it was.
He readied his sword, eyes narrowed, focused solely on destroying whatever was coming his way.
