I just joined yesterday, but I'm already aching to RP. Only problem? I have no idea how to join in.
In the past, I've had to fill out forms/biographies for characters, I've had to wait to be accepted, etc. But I'm not seeing any RP threads with that sort of format. I just see people... posting. In character. Right off the bat. Are they sharing their biographies somewhere else, or are you allowed to just post in someone's thread? I don't want to make an assumption and commit some atrocious act of social negligence, but I really want to get going on RPing!
How do I start? Where do I start? Do I need a character sheet for all characters I intend to use? Do I need to message people before joining their RPs? Are there any tips/tricks/things you wish someone had told you when you first joined? I could use a little guidance... Help a guy out!

You can just startoff by editing your own characters from the Dashboard option and you are good to go. No need to make an app oranything unless the OP asks for one.
Some threads are marked as"Closed", "Ask to join" or"open".

All good stuff to know. I'm not very used to just inviting myself into an RP (even when they say "open"), so I'll have to pluck up some courage beforehand. Thanks for the reply!

So, a good place to start is to, of course, make your character(s) via the dashboard. Now, while obviously not required (it is your character after all), the more detail you put into the characters you make, the more likely it'd catch someone's interest. After making a character, you have several options. You could either go to the community and browse the characters to see if there is one you'd like to involve your own character with, go to the Looking for RP forum and look for a topic that catches your interest, or even make a post on the forum of your own that says what you'd like for an RP. If it's something that catches other people's interest, which isn't very hard considering the large community, you'll get some takers. Hope this helps you.
People looking for RPs will generally post in the Looking for RP forum. You can either PM the player or post in their thread to ask about their topic. You can also post on that forum to propose games.
It is very unusual to just jump into an in-progress RP here. I would consider all RP threads to be closed unless the are specifically marked as "open" in their title somehow. If you want to jump into an in-progress RP, it's a good idea to send the OP a private message and get permission.
Most people find RPs to join in the Looking For RP forum (There's a nifty search tool behind the Find RP link in the nav, if you want help narrowing it down.) If you want more info on using that search tool, here's a handy help article.
If you end up joining someone else's RP, they'll let you know the details about how to join in. Every once in awhile they'll want you to fill out an application, especially if you're joining a group outside of our public forums. But more commonly, you'll have created a character profile on your dashboard that you can post as/link them to so they can double check that it will be a good match.
If you're starting up your own RP, you have a few choices about how to proceed once you've found a RP partner or two on the LFRP board.
By the by, you can use the "launch chat" button at the top and bottom of any forum topic, whether it's in a private group forum or our public RP forums, to turn your topic into a real time chat! There's also a link in the sidebar of private messages that will let you do the same.

- You can just create a RP topic on one of our 3 public RP forums: General Roleplay, Sci-Fi Roleplay and Fantasy RP. Keep in mind that because these areas are public, you'll have to make sure the RP stays in the PG-13ish range.
- You can choose to RP via private messages, and just create a new conversation thread with all your RP partners as recipients. Since this is private, the only rules that tend to apply are not to do OOC illegal things and be nice to your RP partners OOC.
- If you're going to have a whole lot of people in your RP, or the RP setting is going to be very strictly defined and you want to have a place to store world building information alongside it, you might consider starting your own group. This gives you access to profile building tools for the group, but also to creating your very own forums!
- In some cases, you and your RP partner might even decide to use some other messenger or game to RP on.
