A kid, a teenage kid, walks down the street. His clothes are rumpled and dirty like he'd spent the night in a dumpster. His arms are folded over his chest and his hands tucked under his arms to keep warm against the chilly wet morning. It's early still mist is rising from the ground as the sun slowly warms the pavement underfoot.
The boy stops just outside a bakery and waits. A man comes out carrying a loaf of bread. The boy steps in front of him and thinks hard as he stares at the man. Bread. Bread. Bread. the boy thinks to himself as the strings of beads appear over the man's face. The boy focuses on the beads as the man tries to walk around him and question him. The boy reaches for one of the beads and as his hand makes contact it pops. The one beside it pops as well and the boy inhales sharply as he pops a third before stepping back.
"Can I have that?" he asked the man, pointing at the bread. The man looks down at the loaf in his hand. "What is it?" he asks the boy. "It's ... mine. Can I .... have it?" the boy replies quietly. The man puzzles over the loaf for a moment and the boy holds his breath until the bread is passed to him and man walks off.
That wasn't too bad. I need to eat, right? Sooner or later he'll learn what bread is again, maybe. I just didn't want to eat out of the trash again. Is that so wrong? the boy argues with himself in his mind as he squeezes the loaf of bread between his hands.
OOC stuff:
The string of beads - or people's memories/thoughts are things only John and those like him can see. The man who forgot what bread was and other normal people can't see them. John doesn't see them all the time he has to focus or get worked up first - sees them when mad or sad or in this case very hungry. If he were happy and content it would take a lot of work for him to see or manipulate people's minds.

Some magic. Few can use it, but most of the players probably won't have it. Magical characters will likely believe that they are all alone.
