The engine whined as Althalos shifted and the Mercedes gained another ten miles per hour. Up ahead was a three-quarter mile and then the kind of road one might find in the mountains: three sharp u-turns and then another 90 degree turn, narrower than the first and then another two miles another on ramp style turn, a half mile, a small hill that could easily be used to catch air, another half mile and then the finish.
Althalos sped off the straight away and drifted easily through the first two turns of the zig-zag but he had to slow considerably since the final turn was made out of gravel and loose dirt. Several fenders and a tire littered the edge of the turn, warning racers to slow down.

What he wouldn't give to have his car with AI, Aaron thought, as he closed some distance when Althalos slowed down on the last curve. He took the first curve a bit faster than he meant and winced as his rear tire kicked up grass that wasn't supposed to be part of the track. At least he hadn't crashed yet.

Recovering and having lost some of that dangerous momentum, Aaron took the rest of the curves at a good pace--until he hit gravel. "Aw man..." He didn't spin out, at least, and he missed the tires and bumper that indicated other's failures to slow down. But he came too close to heading entirely off the track and only managed to bring himself back to the road after a slight detour.

But seeing the rest of the course ahead of him he knew he'd be okay. The next lap he'd know where to ease off the gas and when to brake. He shifted up to high speed again, wondering how much of that Althalos had seen...

Althalos drifted around the right angle turn and floored it, quickly getting back up to 170 miles per hour. He winced as he saw the hill coming up but at least his angled front would fair better than the Audi's flat front would and he slowed just a little and was in the air for about ten feet, landing with the front wheels down but the angled up front isn't even scratch the pavement an he let out a sigh of relief as he sped past the starting line.

The problem with challenging a racer to a race, was that you'd get a race. But the vehicle might take a beating in the process. Well, that was what money was for. Seeing that Althalos was pulling ahead, and having cleared that last turn, he mashed down on the pedal, shifting as high as the car could go.

Speed, he needed speed. And winced as he scratched the front bumper against the steeper grade of track. And then he was catching air. What was the suspension like in the Audi? He was about to find out when he landed...

But more than that he needed to catch up, and now that he knew the lay of the land, he was ready to give Althalos that race.

Althalos roared down the track, easily drifting through the first few turns again now that he had gotten a good memory refresher

Aaron wasn't far behind and he was quickly finding ways to catch up. On the first curve, for instance, he would be trying for the innermost lane. As soon as Althalos slowed down to take the turn, that would be his cue to speed up just a little...and then brake hard into a drift.

Althalos roared down the next straight and around the next u-turn.

Aaron caught up by the end of the straight away, the front of his Audi bumper just inches from Althalos' rear bumper.

He slid into a perfectly executed drift, now that he knew the car and the track. And he would have punched his fist into the air if only he hadn't needed two hands on the wheel for the next part of the course.

Althalos looked into his rear view to see the Audi right on his tail, "I thought I hears something," he chuckled and shifted up again, quickly going past 200 mph in the next straight and only barely slowing down to drift around the spiraled on-ramp.

Knowing now that he was putting some pressure on Althalos, Aaron grinned and continued to press his luck.

He stayed right on the officer's bumper, a brief space between them appearing as he drifted a tad slower in the curve. And then he was shifting up again, coming right out of the curve. No time to waste, no speed to lose--he was giving it all he got.

Althalos roared down the next straight away and didn't even slow on the next turn, taking it wide but not losing any speed.

Aaron wasn't far behind, and he took the inner line, gaining just a few inches against Althalos.

The real troubling spot would be the triple Us with the gravel...but if he could gain just enough on Althalos, he might be able to pull out a win.

Althalos sped down the track and slowed for the first turn and went down the short straight sideways so that he was already drifting into the second turn and sped up, kicking up gravel as he shifted down and drifted through it, fishtailing into the straight away.

Aaron kept his speed up, slowing only just after entering the first turn; he gained more ground, but it would be tricky to pull off the second curve. He drifted effortlessly, noting the fishtailing of the car in front.

Well, he'd be there shortly. A slight adjustment of the wheels so that he was primed for entering the second curve, and then he was losing speed. He didn't dare add too much acceleration.

"C'mon," he murmured, not wanting to lose or wreck.

Althalos fish-tailed into the gravel turn as well but by the time he finished he had evened out and roared down the next straightaway.

Aaron was ready for the gravel, and braced for the fishtailing that would incur from his speed and the loose gravel. But soon enough he zipped through it and shifted up to top gear.

Time to get cracking and close that distance!

Althalos whipped around the next on-ramp and slowed down for the narrow 90 degree turn.
