Kori sighed, thought hard, then focused long enough to mutter only one phrase in an undestandable speak. ''Hunters killed my mom..''

Sterling's eyes widened. The wyvern-human had spoken clearly! "Oh. I'm really sorry to hear that."

He looked down. "So why did you become a Hunter then?"

''Chir chow chem chI'm was worth cheing spared chrom death.'' They hissed, flinching. The onnly way they had avoided being slain was join the ranks, just enough not be eradicated. Yet their father, a hunter aswell, had been banished after it was discovered just who his wife was. Kori hung their head. ''Mommy warrsn't mean. Mommy chirroudn't chave been killed...''

Sterling decided that he had better sit down. He pulled out a bit of ham and cheese from his pack and offered some to Korilana. He wasn't sure what it ate, but it was still bound to get hungry.

"What happened? Do you remember?"

Kori began to tell Sterling of how they had found their mother killed during exploring. The recounted in horror about hunters finding them near her body, crying. Then how they attacked the hunters in a rage, before getting stabbed in the chest and left to die. How they were found by another hunter that was going to kill them until they reasoned that if the hunter spared them they'd join the hunters as long as it took to be declared not a threat.

The only problem was that Kori chirped the entire story, and didn't tell it by talking due to their tounge.

Sterling listened but quickly discovered that he didn't understand half of what was being said. Oh he could tell when it was something sad, so he figured that was the mother part; and then the anger--something about attacking hunters?--and then finally it finished.

Sterling was quiet a moment, chewing as he thought of an appropriate response. "So that's how it was," he finally said. "Did someone train you or did you train yourself?"

''Chi trained chyself.'' They chirped happily.

"You did? I'm impressed!" He was, too. Most self-trained Hunters didn't exactly live long enough to brag about it. For that matter, even those trained by other Hunters didn't brag too much.

"I suppose though that you'd have to," he admitted, noting the creature's strange features. Wings and tails weren't typical features Hunters had. Though they were sure to come in handy.

They did admit that their wings used to be larger until a hunter clipped them a bit. Then they wavered, starting to tire already.

Sterling stretched and stood up. "Where do you live?" he asked. "Around here or do you hole up just anywhere?"

''Chi do not chirave a chome...''

"You can't possibly sleep outside? Does the guild provide a place for you?" He rubbed the back of his head. If the guild had set up Kori, then it should be taking care of him too. That was what had happened when his father had run away, at least. Then again, guilds sometimes worked differently.

Kori pointed to their clawed talons. ''Chalons chatch chirranything chori cheeps on.'' They replied grudingly. Indeed, hunters would allow them to sleep only to awake and find their floor scratched up badly. The crossbreeds right hand looked bruised, and blistered slightly. A few weeks ago they had got bit by a were, but they didn't want to tell anyone that either.

"Even if you do shred everything you touch to pieces, that no reason for them to kick you out." Sterling noticed the claws and also the bruising. He started to reach for the creature's injured hand.

"What happened to you?" Were those puncture wounds or scratch marks? He wasn't sure, but given that Kori was moving around in the sunlight, he doubted it was anything vampire-related.

They chirp nervously. ''Cherwolf bit che.''

Sterling stilled and looked into Kori's eyes. "How long ago?"

''Chirrrout a chew cheeks chgo.'' They whined. ''Chis chas bad?''

He took a deep breath to steady his nerves as much as to steady Kori. "It's not good," he said. "Have you had any chafing from the silver around your leg?" That was usually the first sign of a werewolf being created: a reaction to silver. But it wasn't always fool proof.

The next test would be to wait until the next full moon, but he rather hoped it wouldn't come to that. Because the next full moon was tonight.

''It chometimes burns a bit, cchirrt chi chon't chink chirrof it chuch.''

Sterling nodded. "Alright, then." Well, the only other thing to keep in mind was that Korilana wasn't completely human, so maybe it wouldn't have such a bad time of turning werewolf. Or maybe it would be ten times worse.

He shuddered a little at the idea of a flying werewolf. It would be worse than a vampire. And then remembered the tube of paste he had in his trench coat pocket. He reached inside and pulled out a small tube. "This, this might help, actually."
