The Man in Gold (played by Witness)

Light filtered through the canopy of conifers onto the gleaming, tarnished armor that he wore as he limped through the forest. This was all wrong, but he couldn't very well fix it at the moment; especially not with this wound. His foot struck an exposed root and he gasped through clenched teeth, although his helmet maintained the same intimidating glower. Dark blue blood streamed down from the exposed chainmail at his knee joint on his right leg, and the dark liquid mingled with the rust stained into the armor from millennia of chainmail underarmors rusting away. Still, he was safe; for the moment, anyway. Taking a dumb portal was a poor decision, but he hadn't the energy to focus on somewhere specific.

Wherever he was, it was a sure bet that the others couldn't get to him here. He'd be out of the great game for a few weeks, but the Man in Gold never took a sick leave where he didn't get something accomplished. Still, best to set the plans aside and focus on the wound that was bleeding all over his foot right now. He looked about, the black horsehair wig set into his helmet swaying with the motion, and decided to limp on until he found someone. Hopefully, there would be a person nearby who could tell him the nearest route to a doctor, or perhaps a healer if the portal had taken him somewhere that had magic.

Dadj Avers was doing nothing of import that day. In fact, he was doing nothing at all during the time frame of the Man in Gold's arrival. The ranger was lounging by a rushing river, his clothes strewn about him to dry in the sun. Water still clung to his curls, weighing them down as the warm rays tanned his skin in the little root bed he had made for himself. Around him and in the water, a white wolf bounded through the spray, snapping at the droplets she kicked up. Dadj's eyes were closed to his friends musings, and his chest rose in a slow rhythm. A saddle laid over the rock to his right, indicating that a horse would be nearby.

The ranger took a particularly deep breath and sighed when the wolf splashed him with more wetness. It would be impossible to dry off with the playful canid prowling through the river.

He continued to limp through the forest, confident that he would get out of this alive. There had been worse times, worse wounds, and he had been in more dangerous locales. As long as he could get some water on this soon, he could go for a little longer; the blood was starting to leak into his boots and he hated when that happened. If he had been a little more conscientious before, he wouldn't be in this mess. No matter, there was one fewer player now, and that's all that he cared about.

His ears twitched inside his helmet; the sound of a river filtered in through the minute holes made near the base of the helmet's metallic ear. Running water, and maybe civilization, lay just over the next ridge, if his ears did not deceive him. He continued to drag himself through the trees, leaving a sanguine trail of dark blue, impossible to miss in this landscape, behind him. Soon, he could see glimpses of sunlight reflected by the rushing river. He pushed himself the last bit of the way and soon collapsed onto his knees by the river; he would take of his helmet and get a drink first, then worry about treating his knee.

Khione stopped her play and looked up the river to the weird thing that had just collapsed to its knees. The wolf was bigger than she should have been and still acted like a juvenile. However, her instincts were alert and focused on the Man in Gold. A rumbling started in her chest and erupted through her jowls.

Dadj opened his eyes to find the wolf cub in the water, hackles raised and staring something down. His brows knit together and he lifted his head away from his arms. He glanced down the river first, and found his dunne horse grazing in the grass, then back up the river. He sat up, now seeing what Khione had discovered. The wolf was vibrating with anticipatory energy and as soon as she saw Dadj focus on the person, she bolted off at it.

He unlatched his helmet and put it aside as he dipped his scarred face into the water and drank deeply; afterwards, he raised up again and let out a gasp. The water was cold, but refreshing; now he would put some on his wound. As he began to work on the latches for the armor on his leg, he heard something nearby, a dog perhaps or a wolf. He pulled off his boots and greaves, revealing a brown pair of trousers underneath, and carefully ripped the pants around his knee to get a better look. It was definitely smashed; the blood was leaking out of a large dent in his knee, and it was painful even to the open air.

He dragged himself along the ground and carefully placed his leg next to the river, and began to drop handfuls of the water on his knee. He flinched as the liquid hit exposed nerves, and he tore a piece off of his cape to bite between his teeth. Tasted horrible, like musty cloth and dried blood; not that the source of those flavors was any real mystery, though. He saw the wolf bounding close to him, and his good eye went wide in anger. He had only his cuirass, pauldrons, and gauntlets on; a battle now would be quite an effort for him, and he could barely move with his leg the way it was.

Khione was charging straight for the Man in Gold. Dadj was getting to his feet now, having surveyed the state this stranger was in. He was not inclined to help someone he did not know, but he was also not inclined to let the direwolf harass anyone. Unless it was funny. The stranger seem injured and therefore this would not be amusing to watch play out. When the Ranger had regained his feet, he put his fingers to his lips and let loose a shrill whistle.

The wolf cub nearly tripped over her own paws trying to turn to Dadj. He motioned for her to stay and Khione laid her ears back in protest. Instincts were telling her to confront this weird man, he was probably a threat! However, she would listen to her master and stubbornly stayed where she was, plopping her rear end in the water, eyes fixed on the Man in Gold.

Grabbing his sword belt, Dadj latched it around his hips and rested his hand on one of the two short swords as he approached the injured stranger.
