What tactical/strategy video games have you guys played, are you good at them, and which is your favorite? When somebody who's not a gamer asks what you're playing when you play your favorite, how do you explain it to them?
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a proud Fire Emblem tactician. My favorites of the series are Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, so much that I've made OCs and a big epic fanfic. Sometimes I alienate people without meaning to...you see, those two are super hard to find and expensive nowadays, so some Fire Emblem fans never played them because they got into the series with Awakening.
I am...decent at tactics. Sometimes on harder parts, it takes me a few tries to get a good strategy, and even then, it doesn't always work perfectly. I tried hard mode on FE Awakening and regretted it. Ended up restarting on normal mode.
FE was the only strategy game I enjoyed until a friend introduced me to Final Fantasy Tactics. Played a bit of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for gba but never really got into it. Final Fantasy Tactics is for ps1 and psp and I think android, and it gripped me more than the gba one. The story is closer to what I'm used to with FE. It has a lot of differences gameplay wise that I had to get used to though.
I've described FE to non gamers as "chess on steroids" lol.

I recently took up Fire Emblem awakening.
And let's just say if I had down classic mode, where all your characters die, there would have been no survivors under me. I got through it, but I'm dreading that playthrough when I let characters die.

Well, i've played Knights of the lodis:Tatic orges, Final Fantasy tactics advanced, and some others i can't remember. I believe i'm pretty good at them. As for strategies, it depends on the fight. I can usually get the strategy quickly, but there are those fights that are made to make you want to break what you are playing on . I explain it to people as like, a virtual more fun version of chess.
I'm not a huge fan of tactics games ... probably because I'm not good at them. :X I have a Warhammer Fantasy army (beastmen, which might explain why I always lose) but that's mostly a craft hobby. I like painting my little dudes. I'm terrible at chess and other tafl games.
I like the Fire Emblem character designs and would like to play the original sometime, since it's a series that everyone raves about! I played FFT a long, long time ago and would like to pick it up again sometime.
Other tactics games I've played include Warcraft 2 (which I love--zug zug!) and Starcraft (which I'm terrible at--too many units!!). Actually, I'm not even sure if thise two count as "tactics" games.
But I think my favorite tactics game is the original Ogre Battle for the SNES! It has a lot of charm.

Rilu: Oh yeah, it does get quite annoying having to restart the chapter when someone dies...but the older FE games didn't have casual mode! It's the only way I know lol.
Heimdall: I've heard of Ogre Battle. Is it like, from the side of the ogres? If so that's quite interesting. Most of the time the ogres/orcs are antagonists, not the other way around. Well I guess there's Shrek but that's a movie. And movie based games suck.

I love the strategy genre. I played fire emblem and xcom. And a few other small ones. I'm pretty good at them though when I do make a mistake its a huge one. And I don't talk to many who aren't a gamer and the ones who I do never ask what I'm doing. So explaining would be difficult.

Nope, though that would be cool! The character designs are pretty standard JRPG fare (though you can have monsters like hellhounds and dragons on your team). A lot of old games have kinda wacky translations.
I normally abhor this genre of RPGs. I just can't get into them; I've tried numerous ones, from Disgaea to Fire Emblem to Final Fantasy Tactics, and just... cannot. They all feel like the battles drag on too much, and they move too slowly for me.
That said, I really enjoyed Knights in the Nightmare, for some reason. Maybe it was the bullet hell mechanics that ended up tipping the balance.
