In the mossy, pulsating, dimly-lit halls of a spaceship orbiting Earth, an old rusty console makes a number of strained and creaking noises, as if it's struggling to function. It is suddenly punched by a leafy appendage resembling a hand, and it becomes considerably quieter. After a pause and a noise of approval, some coordinates are hastily inputted, and a big red button is pressed.
Moments later, it starts making noise again, this time a countdown in some alien language. A short figure in a labcoat scurries over to the ship's transporter and stands very still.
The countdown reaches its end, and with a flash, the figure vanishes. Where did it go? Down to the surface of the planet to look for a specimen, of course.

In the midst of a cornfield, Enigma looks up. It's not their real name, of course - but nothing is real anyway and reality is a construct of the mind, and so are the stars. They're pretty to look at, though.
Enigma looks up because they are standing in the middle of a crop circle, and it's an auspicious evening tonight, and hey aren't really too keen on stargazing but the peace and quiet is a nice change of pace for once. They pull their scarf around their neck, and narrow their eyes at a particularly odd-looking star. Flashing a little bit, moving a bit too quickly. Must be a satellite or a shooting star. But as long as they can't identify it, isn't it a UFO? No one else is around to disprove that notion, anyway. (If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it...?)
Of course, as auspicious a night as it is, Enigma doesn't really expect anything fantastic to happen. Definitely doesn't expect a flash of light a few meters into the rows of corn, definitely doesn't expect any sort of alien incursion.
Nothing like that.

And there it is, a plantlike, yet humanoid, creature in all its short, twitchy, green glory. She looks around for a moment and frowns at the prospect of having hurt the poor rows of corn too much, but quickly gets over it. Progress requires sacrifice.
Then, she drops to all fours and sniffs the air around her, before her pitch-black, bespectacled gaze lands on the human nearby. She tilts her head... and her already wide smile spreads even further, until it looks like it could tear her head horizontally in two.
She crawls closer, only remembering it is capable of walking upright when she is only a few feet away from the human. It opens its mouth and emits a number of horrifying, hissing sounds, the universal translator only kicking in at the very end of the very last word.
"...an?"

Ok, yeah. Right. The universe just loves proving you wrong, doesn't it? Right when you think there's no way anything weird could happen this time, an alien lands right in front of you.
Enigma clutches their chest in surprise. Realistically speaking, there's no way this thing could be anything other than an alien. It looks more plant than animal, and that face... Could it even be called a face? Enigma might have been frightened shitless if they weren't so constantly prepared for he worst the universe had to offer. And this was, by no means, the worst. After all, nobody is dead yet.
"Ok." Enigma replies with a shake of their head halfway between a yes and no. "Right. Cool. Ok. Cool. S'pose you're here to eat me, or somethin'. Nice."

The plant being just stares blankly at the human for a moment. "No. Floran had big lunch.", she says, as she walks around Enigma, evaluating him like one would a piece of meat - and this might actually be what's going on, quite literally. She gets a notepad from one of her labcoat's pockets and starts taking notes, though they look like little more than random scribbles and drawings.
"Interessting hypothessiss! Fasscinating progresss.", she mutters to herself, giving the distinct impression that she doesn't even know what those words actually mean. And then she prods the human with the end of her pen. Again and again, despite any complaints such an action might cause. "Sstill ssoft and flabby sspeciess, Floran sseess. Humanss, alwayss flesshy. Disssappointing."

"Oh." Enigma blinks. "Uhh, sure."
The though that, had this alien thing not already eaten, it would eat them makes Enigma a little bit... Queasy. The size of the mouth on that thing, and those teeth - wait, was that a notebook? Overcome with curiosity and any self-preservation thrown out the window, Enigma steps closer to try and take a peek, though what they can see is ultimately unsatisfying.
Also, it feels kind of like the talking plant is making fun of them. Enigma gets the distinct feeling of being mocked. By an extraterrestrial. Not how they imagined their evening going, at all.
"Hey!" Enigma complains as the alien continues to just jab them with a pen. "Cut it, man! A- and I'm not a specimen or anythin' like that, got it?"
Enigma takes a step back, rubbing their arm. "'m not flabby... Disappointing..." It was only a superficial kind of hurt, though, because they're much more interested in how this alien works than their own wounded pride.

"Aaaaand finisshed.", the alien finally says. She finishes her note-taking, pats her labcoat to make sure nothing is missing, and then claps her hands together. "Now Floran ssay hello."
A long, awkward pause follows, as the alien takes a moment to recollect what this human ritual involve. Then she remembers.
"Hello!", she happily screeches.
Another pause, as she peeks at a small note she keeps in her pocket, with a cheat sheet on human formalities she put together during her previous visit. Then she extends a green hand toward the human. "We come in peace! I am Greenssinger. I am Floran! You are human; flesshy thing, Floran knows that already. What iss your name? Let'ss be friends!"

Enigma cocks a brow and fixes up their hair, even if it hadn't been messed up in the first place. They're more interested in how this alien thing is going to act, and honestly, they're more than a little bit surprised. It's a bit endearing, actually.
"Hi," they return with a grin of confusion. They sit back on their heels, stick one hand in their pocket, and wait. Vaguely, they muse, about what everyone else would think if they heard Enogma had a run-in with a real life alien. Probably wouldn't believe them. There's been too many false alarms in this little out-of-the-way country town, and Enigma has just been lucky to catch the real thing.
"Greensinger, huh?" Enigma chuckles, coolly slipping back into their ordinary behaviour. "Nice. Pretty weird, I could get used to that. I'm, uh, I'm a nobody really. A real - Enigma. Nice to meetcha."
Bravely, Enigma takes Greensinger's hand and shakes it, repressing a shudder at the texture. Weird. Super weird. But weirder things had happened to them, honestly, when they think about it.
Was becoming friends with an extraterrestrial who possibly ate humans for breakfast the best idea? In no plane of existence, at all. Luckily, Enigma hasn't got the best track record of caring what the universe thinks.

"Enigma!", the creature lets out in that loud, shrill tone she gets whenever she's excited - which is to say, almost always. "Floran likess enigmass. Solve them with sscience!", she happily proclaims, her hands resting on her hips as she takes a moment to bask in her own glory. And then, something clicking in her brain, she tilts her head and slowly leans closer, staring the human in the eyes.
"Enigma needss ssolving? Floran may need to sscan more. Maybe disssection. Floran good at that! Floran got the toolss right here ssomewhere..."

Cute. Almost. Unsettlingly cute, maybe, but that's ok because Enigma has a pretty weird sense of what is and isn't cute, anyway.
"Well, good," they say with the hint of a laugh, "I don't think this enigma needs solvin', though, really."
They pale and lean back a little under the Floran's scrutiny. Yeah. There's the unsettling part. "U-uh," they stutter out, waving their arms, "really, there's no need for that. I don't think dissectin' me's gonna solve me better than, uh, me bein' alive will."
Enigma had already (sort of) been partially dissected once, and they've still a scar across their chest to prove it. It wasn't exactly the same thing, but still, an experience they'd rather not relive, thanks very much.
"I- is there somethin' else that ya came here for?" They asked, trying to shift the topic to something more... human friendly.

She seems quite disappointed for about half a second, but the deflection works well. She quickly forgets about the possible dissection, and instead nods happily at the question.
"Yess! Floran comess down to check on humanss. Floran hass friend here! But humanss sseem to sstill be around - not blown themsselvess up yet, or wiped out by ssilly non-Floran alienss, or anything. Will have to take a human up to sship for analyssiss and to decorate living quarterss, but overall Floran iss very pleassed sso far!"
