It's finished! Kinda!
It's going to be continued later on due to recent events. It will be completely finished/refined for October.

tumblr_inline_onh6n41Dyv1soxk50_500.png

Hi! For those who don't know, my name is Tiny! I'm a digital artist.
But today I tried something a little different!

I'm attempting to make my very first full on detailed cosplay, and it will be of Springtrap!
I have no idea how to make pursuits. Nor have I made one before, so most of this is trial and error!
Below you will see my adventures in trying to make my dream of becoming a monstrous dead person in a withering rabbit suit. Spoopy.

I'll also be posting some of my own questions and goals at the end of this post, so previous fursuit/cosplay makers, please lend me a hand!

Part I
Head Frame
Materials
★ Plastic Mesh
★ Glue + Hot Glue Gun
★ Elastic
★ Sharpie Pens (For marking!)
★ Thin Sticky Foam Stuff (For lining the inside of the frame for comfort.)
★ Hooks (Tiny Gold Ones!)
★ Uh... Strange gold pins that do the splits. (Forgot the name.)

Alright! So let's get started! Eek!

0VAyQRz.jpg
First of all, I measured my head, and then cut out two pieces of plastic mesh of the same size, and then another two pieces which is able to wrap around my head. I glue the pieces of the same length together, before combining them to make a circle.

BqhfEgJ.jpg
c7uDnas.jpg

After, it didn't quite... Come out as round as I'd like?
tvmEqgA.jpg
qqngPfm.jpg

But hey, this is the first time I'm doing this. So I decided to keep on anyway and hope for the best.
At this time, I also started to make another head just in case this one did get a little. Ah.

mwsbLTh.jpg
That's the start of the other behind the one I'm working on RN.

2xViQwv.jpg
mW0IvG4.jpg
cPHU9Ip.jpg

Again. The second circle is coming out weirdly, so I took it apart and instead didn't glue the insides of the layers. Instead, I just did one layer at a time, then combined two layers. It's more circular now, but after adding the top layers for the top of the head, it doesn't fit me anymore. ;u;

Anyway, now that the head has the top lines of mesh, time to add the sides in which the jaw will attach to.

Jh1IQhW.jpg
PmpPANe.jpg
xv1pTyl.jpg

Ended up doing the sides too long, but I do adjust them throughout working.

Next is making the jaw! I didn't have any old coat hangers to use as a guide, but instead, I used the gold pins to make a frame for it instead.

KpFe2WL.jpg
fv7WzIl.jpg
Zc1Y6l6.jpg
VjQivhI.jpg
3mL8gcI.jpg

I also decided to add the pins inside of the jaw to have something for the hooks to attach to!
rXlYJnZ.jpg

... But this didn't work so well. I'll explain at the end!

More pins to attach the jaw with;
0xl98lW.jpg

TP7yFQj.jpg

At this point I forgot to take as many photos as I was busy trying to get the jaw adjusted enough so it would touch my chin and be able to pivot.

8VKGJRE.jpg
3sHuLMI.jpg

The pins I used to make the hooks attach to weren't stable enough, and the hooks kept sliding off. So I ditched them and hope to find a replacement tomorrow.

As for the result of the moment, there are a lot of things I'm unhappy with. The jaw looks out of line compared to the top of the head, and the jaw space to rest my chin slips off when i try to pivot it. No idea how to fix these things.

Things to do: jaw looks out of place. Fix it.
Find something else to attach hooks onto

Tomorrow I might actually end up remaking the thing, using actual measurements this time and make sure everything is super duper precise. But it's been a great learning curve today!

If anyone has any tips or tricks or advice, please post! I'd love to hear them.

Part I.V

tumblr_onmrxpErhL1s66c51o1_1280.jpg

Okay! I managed to fix a lot of things today while waiting for my foam. which still haven't arrived yet. (And I paid for next day delivery. Why I oughta---)

Anywho. After redoing the elastic about five times, I ended up cutting the piece in half and somehow, that made the jaw not move strangely, but in fact a lot more smoothly. Hooks are a pain in the butt still as sometimes they do come off, but hey, they're not supposed to stick. At least, not yet I think. I'll debate on what to do with those after I've done my foaming (and furring?)

It honestly doesn't look as impressive as the ones I've seen on youtube in terms of the moving jaw, but it still works. Not as smoothly as I'd like, but it still works. I'm very proud of myself, given I haven't made anything like this before!

I did try to put in some foam padding inside the structure, but that ended up with it being a pain to put on and not really fitting. But I did leave some on the jaw for more comfort when making it move.

Part II
This isn't really working?

NuO1ICY.jpg

I got super excited when my foam came through today! One day late, but even so. I got stuck right in within minutes of opening up the package and pulling out my much needed crafting material!

Getting the first layer of foam to wrap around the head frame was super, duper hard.

TEtqQ8W.jpg
llp83Nx.jpg
jHFOxBg.jpg
IHYEMam.jpg
du46aeP.jpg

But I managed to do it!
4ICTKj5.jpg

In hindsight, I should of just kept it as one layer and carefully construct the rest of the foam, but the tutorial I was following used two sheets of foam. Which... isn't quite what I needed to get the true shape of Springtrap.

NbYeJiv.jpg
sZmDRCE.jpg
jzbpUmw.jpg
8z0xopD.jpg
VX540Fi.jpg
3Sm0CYY.jpg

(I had also stuck some foam where the points didn't cover because of my OCD. yay.)
But this is where things start going down hill, but I carried on regardless.

cVzBysn.jpg

Sketching the head was a disaster. I tried several times to mark the exact centre, yet I still managed to muck it up somehow? Plus, that is a horrible, horrible sketch. From this point I can just see how big the head is, and how anatomically incorrect it is. Ugh.

oHNuWJY.jpg
First time I carved the eyes out, it was way too small.

mBsOc0j.jpg
That's better? If not, a little too toon-y for this character. Forehead is still far too large.

u6Vlvtt.jpg
At least it looks sorta creepy once it has eyes in. (Not permanent.)

I even braved trying to make the snout today;

MeoG7OP.jpg
But it looks incredibly out of model.

So today? Wasn't all that good. Plus, along the way I have found a bunch of technical difficulties, so much so I might have to restart the whole thing again.

1. Head top is too large. Shouldn't of used two layers of foam.
2. It's a bit misshapen. Sure Springtrap is too, but this isn't correct.
3. Jaw doesn't pivot when attached with the foam on the frame anymore.
4. Jaw also disables me from putting on the head.

Luckily I do have enough foam to start again, but perhaps not enough for when I start making the suit parts. *Shrug.*

For now, I'm going to look into a far easier way to make the mouth pivot. The method I used was a little uncomfy, as well as hard to make. Plus it doesn't even work when theres foam on the frame. But as always, if someone is reading this, any help is appreciated.

I'll continue working on this on Wednesday. Hopefully I'll have a clear head and a new plan that time round!

I'm also gonna keep this here for my own future reference.

Part III
Completely Remade and Better than Ever.

So. It's been a little while. When I said Wednesday, I didn't know I meant a weeks time. Anywho! Now that I've got the energy and time, I'm here to post an update about Springtrap;

I completely scrapped the old head and made a new one!

The old head was... honestly, quite terrible. Even though it was my first attempt and I shouldn't be so hard on myself, the method I used was very picky and hard to get right on the first go, so instead I adopted a far easier method to make my head. The Balaclava method.

I heavily followed this tutorial while making the second attempt too! And what can I say, the results ended up being far far FAR better than my first attempt.

Materials
★ Silk Balaclava
★ Elastic
★ Sharpies for Marking
★ Foam (lots and lots and lots.)
★ Glue Sticks (lots more of these too.)
★ Mouldable Plastic (The pellet stuff.)
★ Red Acrylic Paint

So. I... Haven't actually taken many WIP shots of this one. Mostly because I was more focused on building the head this time round instead of documenting my every action. but! The tutorial I linked was pretty much what I did.

No idea how I'm going to add the teeth yet. But I bought the fabric and hope to be adding it soon!

Lookin awesome! The first head made me think of a similar project I was working on in 08. I never finished but somewhere I have this great photo of me in the plastic canvas helmet. What are you making the teeth out of?
Oh man, I love this kind of project. I made an Iron Man pepakura helmet a few years ago using cardboard, fiberglass mat, and body filler.

What are you going to make the outside material of?

Thank you!!! Sadly, as well as that head pivoted with just the frame, it weren't going right for me. Good thing it didn't really, cuz now I have a far better attempt!!
Ohhh, if you'd like, would you care to show? I'd love to see! (Always been a secret fan of your craft work. Hehe.)

As for the teeth, I'm not sure. At first I was going to mould them using mouldable plastic, but that stuff gets kinda heavy when set. I also intended to use plastic for the insides of the ears, but it's not working as well as i'd like.

Been trying to remember what these things were called? As they might be better for the ears.

(I think it's some sort of Gooseneck? I dunno, but if anyone happens to know, please tell me.)

Oooooh! That sounds super neat, I'd love to see how it turned out if you happen to have any pictures! :D

Also, speaking of material, it just arrived! I'm using beige polar fleece fabric, and I'm gonna add textures and different colours using home made spray paint. (Using acrylic paint!)

maKoH8c.jpg

Also had to buy some more Buckram. Last one I bought wasn't actually Buckram. Whoops.

I will try to find the photo 8D As for the teeth, you could just make them out of clay (lightweight air dry clay is probably best). You could flatten out a thick sheet of it and cut them out, since the teeth are so rectangular. Then round the edges a little and apply texture if you want.
This is so cool! Can't wait to see the finished product. I congratulate you on your effort. ^^

@INKED - Awww thank you!!!

@Heimdall - Yo! That looks good! c:
Yes. I do know of a very good clay brand back when I used to make Homestuck horns that I might have to Persue once again . ouo

I really need some help on this one. I've come to the hardest part: adding material.

zPdBQrt.jpg

FhpotwS.jpg

Tape method doesn't work. I've tried so hard to measure it right but it's never going the way I want it. Tried doing it in sections too but that's very difficult

What is the easiest way to put fleece on a head without sewing?

Fabric Hell

S5A07ue.jpg

This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

No sewing either. Don't have the ability or things to do so. So I'm being very very careful with making this head.

I'm wondering how on earth I'm going to add black fabric in the mouth to cover up my mouth. It also pivots so I need to keep that in mind.

More fabric hell.

Mistakes? You mean details? Yeah. Details. *Sweats.*
But seriously I'm glad I can make mistakes on this. Spring trap is generally a messed up character !

I wonder if the ears look small on him now. I'm going to leave the pins on for one more day, to see if things look absolutely correct, then...
Gluing begins.
I'm gonna wake up so early tomorrow to go shopping for more supplies, then it begins.

Made my weapons. Time to do some cut out some withering before gluing it down, and then time for paint!

Awww thank you! <3

I just hope this documentation thing might help someone, despite not knowing much myself. Ahah.

Almost got my all the pins back.

The seams are bothering me. Gonna need a way to make it look natural.

It is time to tint/paint/spray/whatever you wanna call it.

Made some nice little bottles of homemade spray using acrylic paint. Mixed them up to have the perfect colours.

(some of them weren't right. I mixed up new ones along the way.)

Debating if it looks too dark. Paint is still wet, so I'll find out tomorrow if it's too dark or not!

Also had a go at making the squeaky nose! Nose needs to be darker though.

Part IIII.III
Fabric Hell continues. I smell something burning as I write this.

It's probably okay.

Anyway.

Ears now have fabric. On Monday, I'll stick it down and tint it. Hopefully my black fabric will arrive so I can add more detail and put it inside the mouth, and then add teeth!

The head is so close to being finished.
