The feudal village of Nasmara is a medieval fantasy continuity, focused on character development through various social, political, economic and other non-combative interactions. Our admin team generally runs a (normally silly) mini-event one night a month, and also run a scripted event every six months or so, which I make special maps for in the spirit of classic dungeon crawls. Our players also often instigate and participate in character driven plots on a regular basis. You can read more about our setting here.
At the moment we are looking for players who are interested in shop and profession roleplay, and are eager to incorporate these into a community atmosphere. Some of the positions come with pre-attached plotlines, or particular character traits we are seeking, but most are up for grabs to anyone interested in taking them over. If you take up a shop position, we require you to seek out shop roleplay at least twice a week, but other positions in the dream are much more flexible - just talk to us! That said, here is an IC list of what we are looking for, assumed to be posted in the Tavern in the dream, and various common ports of call. Is it true that Nasmara asks people to change their characters?
Yes! Sometimes. While we try to give people a little lee-way with anachronisms, some characters enter wearing clothes that are too modern or have technology too advanced and must be nudged back into the Medieval time frame we work in.
Also, if we get a particularly histrionic character, we’ll ask then to dial back that behavior if IC correction doesn’t work. What does that mean? It means that if Betty frequently bawls in public or George frequently brawls in public, and people giving Betty help doesn’t work, and people asking George to calm down doesn’t work, administration will have to step in and remind the player that Nasmara is intended to be a low-drama dream. It takes two or three incidents before this comes into play, though.
Is it true that Nasmara doesn’t allow lots of different types of characters?
Not quite. We do have heavy restrictions on kinds of characters, being that some have just caused us a lot of trouble in the past, some could cause us a lot of trouble in the future, and others just wouldn’t make sense for the setting. These characters can still be played, however.
Dragons, Vampires, and Werewolves are ‘restricted’, which means that we ask you to play on a more ‘normal’ character for a while so that we get a solid idea about how your roleplay goes. If your character fits in well enough and it looks like you can be trusted with a large or dangerous character, you can put in another application with the more exotic class. So, you can play one of these, but it’s after a trial period.
Children are not a restricted kind of character, but there’s a heavy bit of Lore involving children in the main plot of the dream. Bad things can happen if a child gets hurt! We also have pretty realistic expectations of a child’s behavior, and between nightfall curfews and overprotective caregivers, many folks who play child characters feel stifled. It’s best that if you want to bring a child character to the dream to bring an adult character too, so you have someone to play when children would normally be back inside.
Thieves, assassins, bounty-hunters, and the like are allowed, but we do try to take a moment to OOCly remind the player that it’s a really small town, and crimes get found out very quickly. Being a thief is fun to roleplay. Being that one-handed guy everyone hates because he stole from the inn is not so much fun to roleplay.
Is it true your admin are mean?
We don’t think so, naturally. Our administration team is active, however, with problems being handled within minutes. They’re also not willing to change the rule-set just because someone really really really really wants them to.
We also respect that people’s characters are special to them, and that there is no fully pleasant way to ask someone to change (in some cases) several aspects of their creation to fit in better with a group of people they’ve never met. At the same time we recognize that there are many, many other places for people to play, and truly do want a visitor to find the best place for them to be happy in. If that’s with Nasmara, great, if it’s not, we’ll usually have some recommendations for you.
Is it true that Nasmara bans a lot?
No. While we occasionally suggest that someone’s character may be better suited for other dreams, we only ban if a player becomes intentionally or extremely disruptive or verbally abusive.
Is it true things are done really differently in Nasmara?
Yes, it seems so!
One thing that sets us apart from other dreams is that if someone is in the dream, they’re available for roleplay. We don’t allow idling in the dream, or OOC lurking, so if someone is on your screen, it’s reasonable to expect that their character is either there already or about to be! Whomever has an avatar there first gets to claim that their character was there the whole time, if they choose to, but anyone else must ‘arrive’ to the place.
You’re never expected to ask for roleplay, and are encouraged to post your character in whenever you feel like it. In fact, we prefer that there is no OOC chat in the window at all. If you’re feeling unsure or need clarification on something, a whisper is always appreciated.
And as far as talking with the administration goes, if you’re talking to one of them about an issue, they are your ‘assigned’ person until they hand you to another spokesperson. To make sure you get a fair and informed response, they do live-share whispers during a administrative issue with each other, so the voice of one of them is the voice of all of them.
Oh, and there’s no such thing as a fully ‘private’ roleplay. Even if people are in their houses, your character can ‘knock’ on the door! It’s useful to remember that we’re uploaded in the I. While steamy things may happen from time to time, nothing is so sacred as to be immune from interruption.
We also have a higher emphasis on realistic reactions than other dreams do. If someone is being loud just off-screen, sound or sight will still ICly carry (through emits or whispers), and people will still react to them. Casual destruction of property or displays of power will be reacted to as if someone did the same action in the middle of a grocery store in real life. Citizens of Nasmara may live in a magical world, but that doesn’t mean they expect it all the time!
Doesn’t all that that make it really boring?
Not to us! The folks we keep are either people who have had high-drama roleplay careers and are now rather tired of it, or people who have alts in other high-drama dreams who sometimes like to roleplay a quiet night or two.
The people who will enjoy Nasmara are the sort who think that character development should happen over weeks or months; who recognize that an everyday sort of life can produce more than enough drama; and who put enough thought into their characters and the setting to enjoy an immersive experience.

I really like the dream! I think you all are doing an amazing job keeping things how you have them!
Thank you Vivien! =] We try!
