"Graaaaahhhhh..."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Bear. I don't have any food on me right now." the young girl replied. Her bear cub companion lowered his head glumly and let out a low, almost defeated growl that vibrated through the girl's blonde hair.

"Hehehe, stop sulking already, you're tickling me." Lucy reached up and gently stroked the bear's back, to which he gave a contented purr. "Don't worry, once we get back home, I'll make you some yummy cookies."

"Grrrrhhhh."

"Of course I'll put extra honey for you. You don't have to ask every time, you know."

"Graaahhh..."

The child nodded gently, as to not drop the bear cub on her head. "Uh huh. If you just say "the usual", I'll know what you mean."

A comfortable silence dawned on the two as the girl's feet crunched under the leaves of the forest they traveled in. A gentle breeze blew around them, slightly carrying Lucy's hair.

"Aaahhhh, it's kinda chilly, don't you think?"

"Graaahhhh..."

"Well of course you can't feel it. You have a fur coat."

"Graaah haaa haa..."

"Oh, so now you're going to rub salt on the wound, are you? That hurts my feelings, you know. I guess someone doesn't want the honey cookies after all." Lucy crossed her arms and puffed out her cheeks. Mr. Bear reached out a paw and swiped playfully at her nose.

"Ow, what are you doing now? You're still not getting them." He passed his other paw over the tip of her nose this time, causing the girl to fidget uncomfortably. Finally, he began a steady motion of rubbing her nose with his soft paws.

Lucy reacted exactly the way he expected her to. "A-Ah, s-stop that! I...I'm gonn-ahh...ahhhh...ACHOO!" Mr. Bear was nearly sent flying off of Lucy's head with the force of the sneeze.

"Graaah!" The child sniffled and gently rubbed her nose. "S-See? You almost...fell off my head you dummy. You did that on purpose, didn't you?"

"Rrrrrr..."

"Wait wait wait, okay okay! I'll make the cookies for you, just please don't do that again!" Mr. Bear seemed content at this point and let his head rest on Lucy's hair.

"Geez...you're sadistic." she mumbled as they continued their walk.

From behind a tree ahead, Maya emerged and stood in their path. Around her right arm she wore a simple white cloth as a makeshift shoulder cast.

"Do you value your life?"

"Eep!" Lucy gasped when the strange person emerged from seemingly nowhere ahead of them.

Who is that? I-Is she what they call a..."child predator"? the girl wondered. Mr. Bear stood up on top of her head and growled at the mysterious woman. Lucy reached a hand up and stroked him.

"Easy, Mr. Bear. M-Maybe she's friendly." Lucy began taking more cautious steps towards the strange person, and once she was in range, she immediately picked up on her thoughts.

Do you value your...life? she heard in her mind. She just keeps saying that over and over in her head, like she's trying not to forget it......Or...maybe it's more like a broken record? I can't tell.

Lucy approached the woman and waited for her to ask the question, and when she did, she tilted her head. "Uhm...uh...who are you, Miss?"

"I am the one who is the won who only knows 1. Do you value your life?"

Maya looked at girl, waiting for an answer.

Lucy hesitated to speak at first, and Mr. Bear whimpered for her thoughts on the situation.

"I...I don't know." she responded honestly. Her companion seemed discontent at her answer, to say the least.

"Wha-ow! Mr. Bear! Why'd you bite me?!"

"Grrrraaaahhhh...!"

Lucy's eyes widened for a moment, but then lowered shamefully.

"Oh...sorry..." Lucy turned her attention back to the woman who asked her if she wanted to live.

"U-Um...well...yes, I do." she responded.

"Hm." Maya stared at her for a while, though it was unknown what was going through her mind during that time.

Suddenly, her left hand moved into to her cast and she revealed a senbon she had been hiding in there. Without warning, she threw it at the girl. Right after, she sprinted forward towards her.

"Then prove it!"

Lucy barely had enough time to register what had happened, let alone dodge the incoming projectile. Mr. Bear, however, had leaped into action the instant their attacker decided to make her move. He leaped off of the girl's head and caught the senbon like a frisbee in his mouth, though he made sure to not bite near the pointed ends.

"Grrrrr...." he growled as he spit the needle out. Lucy's eyes widened.

It was a poisoned needle? Did she just try to kill me? "U-Uhm, thank you Mr. Bear, but Miss I don't want to fight." she explained as the woman ran towards her, cautiously watching her movements in case she went for another attack. Mr. Bear stood on all fours now with his head low, ready to pounce on a moment's notice.

"Then you do not wish to live, and I must kill you." Right as she reached them, Maya accumulated some chi into her palm and thrusted it forward towards Lucy. "Special Move! Seikei No Kyuudon!"

Without even having to read her mind, Lucy could tell that the woman meant her harm and would try to inflict it once she reached her, so she maintained focus on her mind to predict what she would do.

However, as the woman got close, her mind suddenly went blank, and Lucy was unable to predict the attack she thrusted at her. She wasn't that worried, though, since she was still behind Mr. Bear, where she truly felt safe.

And being in front of her, Mr. Bear was quick to retaliate against Maya before she could even get to Lucy. He jumped up and attempted to clamp his sharp jaws around the wrist of the attacker as she thrusted her hand over him.

Before her hand could reach Lucy, a sharp pain spread across Maya's arm. Looking down at her wrist, she saw something attached to it. Shaking her hand up and down a few times did nothing to release it's grasp.

"Hm? What is this thing?" she asked, acknowledging it for the first time.

Suddenly, Mr. Bear's teeth took on a blue hue as he bit down on her arm.

Oh, I see what he's doing. Thanks, Mr. Bear! Lucy extended both of her arms out as if asking for a hug. In the next moment, Mr. Bear released his hold on their attacker and was pulled into Lucy's embrace seemingly by an invisible force.

Hugging Mr. Bear tightly, Lucy held her hand out to his mouth, to which he bit down lightly on. Lucy winced from the pain, but as Mr. Bear's teeth took on a blue hue again, she let out a relaxed breath.

"Thanks." she said as she set him down again once he was finished. Her hand was slightly bleeding from where he'd bitten her, but she ignored it as she got into a ready position against their attacker with Mr. Bear in front of her, albeit closer than before.

Maya observed the exchange quietly, before finally speaking up. "Did you just...take my chi?" she asked. It was either that or he had stolen some of her vitality. "And right in front of me too, how rude."

Mr. Bear released a spiteful growl, which one could interpret to be something along the lines of "Bite me."

"How rude?" Lucy looked genuinely shocked at that statement. "Says the meanie that's attacking me and my friend for no reason in the middle of the forest!" she shot back.

This time, she went on the attack. Throwing her hand out, she telekinetically grabbed her opponent and yanked her forwards with enough force to make her stumble. At the same time, Mr. Bear jumped up and attempted to bite down on her neck while she was vulnerable.

It's time to stop playing defensive.

When she was yanked forward, Maya used the momentum to leap forward towards Lucy and throw a kick. Meanwhile, she aimed her right hand up at the bear and shot out an energy blast at him. "Try dodging in mid-air, plush toy."

Haha, plush toy. Lucy would have laughed out loud at the girl's comment had she not been in the wake of a kick. Mr. Bear was sent flying a distance away from the blast that their opponent emitted, but Lucy didn't immediately focus her attention on her companion's health.

Instead of worry for his well-being, Lucy was struck with immense fear. The foot flying at her face caused her eyes to widen as she was forced to remember a similar foot belonging to her own father coming towards her in the same manner.

"No!" she cried as she turned away while shielding her face with her arms, just as she did in the past. Not that it helped. If she blocked it, he would just kick her again and again until it hit, and even then he would continue until she stopped moving.

But it was only when she found herself in elementary school surrounded by classmates approaching her with the intent of "exercising the evil inside of her" by holding her down and chanting some made-up words, that she unlocked two things:

One, her fear of being touched or harmed.

Two, a physical manifestation of her desire to keep people away from her, in the form of an ability she calls...

...Repulse.

In the next moment, a gust of clear, but visible force blasted away from her in every direction, forcing anything within it's radius away from the girl. The ground remained perfectly fine, as the Repulse only pushed away anything in front, behind, beside, or above her. The radius of the blast was not very big, but it no doubt affected Maya, who was extremely close to her. Even nearby trees were forced from the ground and knocked over from the sheer force of it.
