So when I try to make a topic much of the time it only let's be post as one of my characters, but I don't want to post by them. Is there anyway to change that?
Do you mean, when you'd rather post as yourself (i.e. under your username, etc.) rather than one of your characters? That's simple: when it comes to the writing field, there should be an option that says "Post As:" and a dropdown box. Just click the dropdown box and make sure the option You is selected. That way you can always post as yourself.
If you mean whenever you reply on a topic, and it auto selects a character for you? That's just a matter of convenience: when you last visit a topic and you've posted as a character there, the topic has it set to that character just in case you want to post again as that character. Again, all you have to do is just select You from the dropdown box.
If you make a mistake in the forums and post as one of your characters anyway, you can always edit it by clicking the edit button over your post. This doesn't work in Private Messages, however.
If you mean how do you keep a topic you've visited before from auto-selecting a character, I don't think there's an option for that yet.
If that doesn't solve it or you don't see a dropdown box with your characters in it, maybe it's a bug! In that case, you should probably screenshot it and report it to Kim just in case.

Lucree is correct! I also want to add on to that, that any public roleplaying forum only allows you to post as a character. So if you're, for example, posting in the General RP forum then you can only post as a character, not as you the player. This is intentional because these forums focus on roleplaying and not OOC chat.
