that's what i take as the 'minimum safe distance for spitting' clue

crickets have a spit attack, but it seems all their moves figure their hit chance on the same die roll

one could interpret a roll, with modifier, landing 10 or below as indicating you're 11 feet, meters, yards, whatever away from it and that the spit only has a range of ten of some measurement unit
