Darth_Angelus Moderator

You've seen the adventures of the Princess and the Hero. Now is your chance to create your own with the RPR fanfilm contest!

What we're asking you to create is a short video that takes place within the world of the RPR, a land of cross-genre mashups and inhabited by all the characters on the site, as well as "archetypal" characters that typify the tropes of their genre.

We wanted to open this contest up to as many people as we could, so live action and animated films will be accepted. What we'll be looking at is how each video captures the spirit of RPR.

You are welcome to collaborate with others for your submission, each winning team member will receive a copy of the prize. Those team members must have contributed something significant to the project, such as writing the script, acting, music etc.

PRIZES
3 winning videos will be selected. Each member of a winning team will receive a Greater Wand of Epicness (6 months of user Epicness)

RULES
  • Keep the videos short, ideally less than 5 minutes but we'll allow upto 10.
  • Keep teams to four members or less.
  • All of the footage used must have been created by you. Please don't include clips from movies or tv shows.
  • You may use footage captured from video games if they are new scenes with yourself and your team controlling the characters. Please do not capture existing cutscenes from a game, these fall under the same restrictions as movies and tv shows.
  • You may use stock and historic footage as long as it is either copyright free, or you have obtained permission. You will need to give proper credit as well.
  • You can reference the mods and Kim, but please don't cast anyone to play them. If they exist in your story, they are off screen.
  • Similarly, you can reference characters from previous RPR videos (Princess, Hero, Troll etc) but the idea of this contest is to create your own archtypes.

OH MAN. THIS IS EXCITING.

My computer can't handle the process of capturing footage and I have no video resources, but if anyone is in need of a voice actress for a project please hit me up. I have a good quality mic now and some experience with voice acting (in Darth's series). I'd be super dang stoked to collaborate with someone!

OH HECK THIS IS COOL

I need to brainstorm ideas for an animation then! Wooooo!

What about stock footage, or historical footage?

Glad to see people getting excited for this contest! :D

That's an excellent question (I'll update the rules with the answer too). You can use stock and historical footage as long as it has no copyright or you have obtained permission. You'll also need to give proper credit to the source :)

Sanne I may need your voice :O

Alrighty friends! I got some questions!

You mentioned that our characters are a part of the RPR universe. Would it be okay for me to ask other members of the community to cameo their characters, despite them not being on my team?

Which leads to my other question: are those characters allowed to be in the film? My only concern would be copyright issues.

If the film is made and it's one of the winning ones, would the characters belong to RPR now? Because I'd like to cameo one or two of mine, but they're soon to be a part of my webcomic which I have plans to copyright once there's more than a 100 pages.

Another thing: is it okay to use designs for the genres that I may create for the genre jumble?

One last one: Is it okay to ask other members for voice lines despite them not being in my team? E.g: I'd like to have a range of voices but a group of 4 might not supply that. Credit will be given of course, but I was just wondering if they had to be in my team for them to be able to do some voice acting.

Hit me up! :D

Also, I'm assuming you can only be part of one team to qualify for a prize?
Can the films be made with other RPR members either starring in the film alongside, or do they have to be made on our own entirely?
DAMN! THIS LOOKS FUN! I <3 filming! :)

Excellent questions and I've been consulting with Kim on some of the answers.

First of all, we want to see new archetypal characters as the focus of these fanfilms, but you are welcome to give cameos to your existing characters (or those belonging to your team). Please don't use characters belonging to anyone outside of your team.

As for who owns the characters, this is what Kim had to say.
Quote:
The answer to this is no, we wouldn't own the characters. Much like putting the characters up as a profile on the RPR, we are granted use rights (such as screenshots of the profile to show the world how profiles on the RPR look, for example). In this case, we'd have the right to show the film they made to people. But we wouldn't own the IP for the character itself.

However, since RPR does own the characters created for the Genre Jumble contest, RPR grants permission to use characters you create for that contest in this one too.

Finally, the team size of four does include the voice actors. Remember, we want to keep the videos short, so you're not going to have a lot of time for an extensive cast.

As an example, almost every RPR video has had a cast of two (Kim and myself) providing voices for the various characters.

That's correct. It would be unfair if someone ended up in all the teams :)

You can join forces with up to three other people, but if you want to work by yourself, you're welcome to do that :)

Then I look forward to seeing what you submit to us :)
For live action do they have to be members?
Sanne Moderator

I have another question Darth!

Can I provide sound clips to another team/person if I choose to only be eligible for a prize in one specific team? For example, if I were to team up with Tiny and be in her group, can I still provide sound clips to Ryu as long as I don't count towards his team and forfeit placing if he places?
With regards to royalty-free music, are songs (that we create) that pay homage to popular songs okay to use? An example would be the song Magna Carta from Horrible Histories that pays homage to The Proclaimer's 'I would walk 500 miles'.

Also for live action; are some costumes that are part of a full cosplay (say Inuyasha for example), would using part of their costumes for pieces be okay, or would that be not allowed- say if we had Inuyasha's sword or his robes, but didn't wear all of the costume, is that still okay?

They don't have to be members, but there won't be any prizes for them.

Stick to one team please :)

Both of these should be fine. Feel free to mix and match bits and pieces from different costumes to create something new :)
Ryu

If anyone is seeking a group (And you have a decent ability to draw) please hit me up I might can use your talents for my idea!
My laptops broken! I can't do my animation or art :( :( :(
Are we allowed to cameo Doubutt in our films?

Does this extend to paintings, such as medieval illustrated manuscripts and paintings made by famous artists like da Vinci, Van Gogh or Picasso? If so, how should we credit them- will a simple 'Mona Lisa - Leonardo da Vinci (circa 1503-6)' suffice?
Darth_Angelus Topic Starter Moderator

I think that would be acceptable :)
