The smaller the scale, the less energy required.
But don't you guys think there should be some kind of limiter on it? I don't think that anyone could compete with something so powerful unless there was a weakness of some sort.
Well, I've been thinking in this. And, while a quantum computer is ridiculously powerful, what if. In order to achieve that level of science you have to forfeit any sort of combat initiative skills. Making them generally weaker in combat due to basic their class on purely science?
Kinda like a blacksmith or something around those lines.
Edit: Also the more I think about it, I don't think we should have magic, kinda ruins the technological age esque vibe of the game.

Magic is just technology we don't understand yet, as the saying goes. It could be explained away as a special set of either ancient, extra-terestrial, or future humanity to help us poor fools get out of this apocolyptic rut. Nanobots that can manipulate fire "spells". Bioviruses that cause status effects. I don't mind either way.
So, in lore, why don't we agree that operating a quantum computer requires a dedicated class. I've read that using Q. Comps to enhance optimization of classical comp programs is already around the corner of 2017. This could translate to waaaay better cooldowns in just about every ability dealing with software/hacking/computing stuff of the classical sense. That would be the first levels of tech available to "Q. Smiths" as well as other classes, if a bit tricky to find or produce. Actually using it for imaginary Q. level feats would be where we could actually explain away magical feats by just how ridiculous quantum stuff can be. Q Smiths could equate to wizards now that I've written it out. Squishy, underpowered but great potential to be completely OP but still such low health that one good sniper could KO one if their sensors were distracted for a moment.
That kind of roleplayer is not me and I will salute anyone who attempts that without eventually seeming OP

Well I was planning to incorporate that computer into nanotechnology where you get little tiny sand like stuff that floats around players that can deflect bullets or projectiles. Purely in defense, nothing in offense. And I was planning for one of my characters to be only have that and that only while the other is the offensive type. Melee attacks may or may not be effective. Best would be explosives to render bits of pieces of that "shield" off. Normally this kind of engineering would be really expensive considering the size of scale we are talking about.
Cause...in terms of that engineering skill, computer in present day do not have that high computation nor that small scale to process high speed projectile combat. Not to mention these particles would move at the speed of sound if we are going to scale it down that small.

I have ideas some times. I much prefer giving them out and having others use them as opposed to running my own games. Not quite confident for that yet.
@Robinn Are you playing Gaara?
(Imagine a picture here I tried but the link broke.)

Never head of the name before. And if you are assuming Naruto, no it goes more complex than that.
I know, Is joke. I saw sand shield and immediately thought that all right.
Will there be a distinction between nanotech shields and Halo-esque energy shields or should they be merged into the same thing? I'm thinking nanotech is, as you said, way more costly but equally more versatile while energy shielding is cheap and clunky.

To be perfectly honest, it seems you guys are figuring it out between yourselves. Which is good, because I thought this topic wasn't going to gain any real popularity. But boy, was I wrong.
I'm trying to be equal yet realistic, and trying to awnser all the questions, even if I don't have the awnsers myself yet, so thank you all for your patience, and thank you all for contributing! This is how a community should form! How a story should be made!
Hehe.

In a way, energy shielding I presume would be a shield pointed at one direction with player's interaction. A nanotech shield would have the nanotech bits surrounding the player, thus it is a shield that covers 360 without the player's interaction. Energy shield takes energy when hit. Nanotech shield doesn't require anything but physics usage. Basically the nanotech forms a shield at an angle which the bullets goes off its trajectory, rather than blocking it head on.
Energy shield would be cheap. A projector and receiver with energy input would result an energy shield. Nanotech shield requires to make nanobits at a nano scale, which is often trouble some due to how small it is. It may go even smaller to molecular scale, who knows. Those require large machinery and precision. Not to mention you gotta install a small computer into them, thus money.
Sweet I thought I was being overbearing. I hope less active members interested in this think the same way sp8der and aren't too put off by pseudo-science jargon talk. We do need someone to decide what is cannon or not when we disagree on things. Dont feel shy to do so or give your own thoughts GM.
Continuing with energy-nano mumbo; How about we simplify things by saying all shapeshifting personal shielding falls under nanotech. The more "bits" (nanodrones) a network possesses is how effective it can deflect and not break while diverting a projectile's kinetic energy. My character would use somewhere around 32bit shielding to create a max of two hexagonal spheres. A sandlike shield that is that tiny to almost be unseen would be something ridiculous in the thousands.

Well I can't say it's particularly enticing, since I feel very much like a child listening while the adults talk
I mean, I understand what you guys are talking about, so I'm not saying that I'm stupid. I just feel stupid by comparison, and find myself wondering if I really belong here.
I think it's pretty freakin' awesome that people here are taking this seriously.
Don't worry Yurei, we've all been there

Naaaa I'll give out the short version.
Energy shield: Cheap, disposable, one direction only, uses energy. No high skills or stats required.
Nanotech shield: Expensive, non-disposable, requires maintenance with somewhat heavy machinery or sorts, does not require energy when deflecting but requires charging of sorts, deflects all directions, requires really high stats in science and engineering.
In short, people very rarely have nanotech shield because the devotion to science and engineering is so high, it doesn't seemed feasible by solo players, much less party groups. Guilds? Maybe...but to even train someone to high stats that have almost 0 attack power in skills, magic, and others, except with guns and others. Basically in comparsion, telling a soldier with a hand gun to level up in a playing field of tanks.

Basically I am giving a concept of a really terrible class match up with a really powerful skill/hand in the end of the journey.
Yeah but Yurei. If we don't quantify the quantum flux drives, how are we ever going to differentiate from bio luminescent natural gases or holographic star trek time, wibbly wobbly capacitors!
I'm not a tech-head so my jargon speak could actually be way worse if I was into deep into computers and modern tech. I've just seen a few (many bad tv) scifi films and star trek episodes once and a while. Glad our enthusiasm is welcome. Buuuut of course I'll keep it low key when we get into the actual thing. That's where I'll struggle personally, as this seems to be the first rp I'm partaking in a while.

I haven't watched much sci-fi. Just a little much of research on modern science. Speaking of which, this also allures to civilian jobs make weapons to fuel for war. ->Rifes->Gatling Gun-> Machine gun(originally to decrease casualities but instead increased it) Gunpowder -> Gun smithing->etc
@Robinn
... hmmm. Sure. Like super-duper quantum computers, super-duper nano shields could be endgame gear spec'd into spefically. In an actual MMO I could see that and it would help immersion sense we are in an MMO, but this is still a roleplay and roleplays die (no offense all involved, but it happens) before we reach the end game, making these end game gear talks kind of moot and only something for characters to strive for and MAYBE obtain one day in the story. I am ok with that, as long as you are.
Also nanotech sounds completely overpowered against everything, except hacking (which is hard to quantify in stories) and specific energy draining weaponry. I want it.
Aaand I wrote a para of jargon again welp.
