So...

How do keep yourself from overextending?

I've made sure I limit myself to make sure I have time to respond, but I noticed that some folks are literally jumping in on every RP that comes available.

I'm NOT hitting at anyone, I'm just curious...how do you do it! Lol

My brain would fry!
It's been a problem for me in the past for sure. These days I suppose I try to make sure, as much as possible, that the other writer and I are compatible. If someone is expecting multiple replies a day and says as much, I know it won't work out even if our characters look awesome together at face value. I can't post every day and I let my partners know that, plus it's written right on my public profile. Stuff like that goes a long way towards my holding back.

I also restrain myself from jumping on everything. Hard sometimes... but I'll look at my current RP load and objectively think "can I maintain another game right now?". By and large I've been successful so far.

One other thing... the terms 'long term RP' are a major turn off. I think it puts undue pressure on both parties and if there's no conceivable end in sight, it drags into oblivion. I'd rather do one story, beginning, middle, and end, then do a second if I enjoyed writing with the person. You build up a long term RP doing several stories then but there's always a clear goal or objective. It really keeps things on track. I think trying to make one thing go forever is why a lot of RP's die out.

You know, I think that last paragraph is a fantastic point. I know I have two going on right that I think are amazing, and I am afraid of adding anything to detract from them, and I do t want them going to oblivion.
It's definitely hard to keep from over extending. It's also part of people's mental ability to do so. Lol

Im sure im not alone when I say, my characters are all fragments of my self! Rps are taken from the crazy place in my head, where all these voices dwell, and the stories come to life! (~insert eye twitching madness here~)

Everyone has taste too, though. I myself enjoy a story that sometimes floats on with no direct goal in sight, because I have the ability to come back to it at my own leisure. Long term rps for me give a reason to not rush, because we are not necessarily trying to get anywhere immediately. I have a busy life with a lot of rps at the same time too, so, it's nice knowing I'm not rushing with any of them. Long term to me means that, sure, we can keep this going for a while, but, we get to take our time!

I have 3 active rps that have been going for over a year! They are great! So much has happened, just casually! =) because we don't get tired of the mellow pace.

But, over extending is hard still XD because of how easy it is to reply to casually flowing rps, sometimes you just have to look at how many you have. Always use best judgment. =)

<3 you too darkon!
We will find an rp that works for us one day! Haha
We have tried, what, 3 rps together that never lasted too long? XD I feel bad! We will get one rolling sometime though!
These are all super interesting points, because I haven't really thought about this much!

I'm one of the hopping-on-anything-that-interests-me people. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands? But if I'm interested in and enjoying a roleplay, I can fire out replies easy. There've been times where I've been revolving through two or three RP's, back and forth between replies, all at the same time!
I'm pretty eager to go quickly because my best experiences have been with that, honestly. On my first site, we used to wait until all four of us were on before we even started. ^^ Long times between replies takes me out of the mood/immersion/whathaveyou and I'll probably forget important details about what's going on. I'm always grateful for replies I get from the more elusive friends, but it really isn't the same kind of fun for me!

ON THE OTHER HAND, I definitely don't want my friends overexerting themselves. If they don't have the writing energy I do (or if they expend more for their replies), that's alright! I can definitely live without RPing LMAO

There are so many interesting people here though, I can see why its hard to say no. Im lucky that Im in 2 RP's right now that are both going fantastically. Both partners are very good storytellers.
