Exactly what it says on the tin can. Show me/tell me about your animals.
I only have one cat left back home. Her name's Luna and she's a model, although endearingly bad at cat things like hunting and climbing. She was malnourished as a kitten (I found her on the roadside). I used to have a German shepherd named Max who was an incurable car-chaser but otherwise really intelligent; we taught him tons of hand signals and Estonian/English commands. And then there was Tiger. Before I learned how damaging outdoor cats were to the local ecosystem, he was a great hunter, and very photogenic (although he stuck his face way too close to the camera). Also he taught me what death was because when I was little he dropped a violently decapitated chipmunk at my feet.
As per my lease agreement, I can't have pets anymore unless they fit in an aquarium...any suggestions? I've kept turtles, shrimp, and tropical fish in the past (so many fish), so they've kind of lost their appeal.

How about a toad, frog, lizard, snake, or some kind of spider? If you're not a fan of things like snakes and spiders or they happen to be too expensive (which is completely understandable) then maybe a rodent of some kind? I'm not sure if they qualify since they're not suppose to go in tanks.
In any case, your pets all sound great! Oliver seems like a gentleman, and I'm glad Tiki's doing better. Sorry about Hades...I lost a cat to coyotes as well. Which is why Luna stays indoors now, hah.
Always happy to talk about my children. I have four at the moment though there have been many before them.
Ash
Here's my biggest cat, weighing in at around eleven pounds. He's six years old. Him and his brother (not blood-related) are supposed to be purebred Napoleons though apparently we didn't actually get their papers. This was news to me. He's a handsome boy that some people are scared of. Very calm and laid back, doesn't mind me sticking a camera in his face at all. In fact, he normally takes a nap. He's the least social of all them though not unfriendly. He's the only one that'll let me put my head on him and listen to him purr. Overall, a very lazy cat that prefers flight over fight, but is ridiculously strong when he chooses to be. Cutting his claws is a nightmare.
Frost
My second biggest cat and the oldest. He, too, is six years old, but beats Ash by a week. He is also supposed to be a purebred Napoleon. We have our suspicions. Very reasonable ones. This one, however, lacks pretty much anything predatory. He's kind, sweet, friendly, loving, and oh so curious. He is the very epitome of the phrase "curiosity killed the cat." Sometimes I fear it will be what kills him with his love of plastic and plants. A friendly little creature, he's the cat you expect to find greeting people. He's also the one who climbs into everyone's stuff. Bringing a cat-sized bag to my house? Or even a not-cat-sized bag? Expect to find this ball of white fluff in it. Most people think he's lacking a few brain cells since he can come across as a bit dense, but he's proven himself to be smarter than anyone ever thought when he was the first - and only - cat to figure out the treat dispenser. He's overall a very friendly cat who's open to making all sorts of new friends.
Ember
This little feline who is neither purebred nor laidback is our happy little accident. Or at least mine. Her mother showed up at our house in the middle of winter, obviously tame and either lost or abandoned. We took her in and only later found out she was pregnant. Three kittens were born including a stillborn. Of the two living, we had one male and one female. A little black boy I named Coal and a little tortie female of the name Ember. Once weaned and no longer in need of their mother, we had to give up Midnight (the mom) because she was horribly cat aggressive and continuously searched the boys out to attack even while in heat. We would have kept her if it wasn't for that, but instead I kept this darling little baby. She and I are very attached and she has become a spoiled rotten little part-feral kitten who is far more demanding than any other cat I've met. Her brother was given a home where he could eat watermelon for all of what I hope is a very happy life. Ember is three years old and is a bit overweight at just under ten pounds. It's a work in progress. With her feral heritage, I would say her instincts are heightened compared to the boys. She relies on those fight or flight instincts more than they do and is rather skittish of anything new or different. We have our issues, but I daresay they're worth all the joy she brings. All in all, she's a sweet, nervous little thing that's also extremely demanding.
Stella
And last but definitely not least, the newest member to our household. Stella is a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix though I often wonder if there isn't a much larger breed in there somewhere. She's a stocky little dog and trust me, it's muscle, not fat. She's far too energetic for any fat. She was once my aunt's dog, but certain circumstances that changed all of our lives landed her in my household. When my aunt got her, though, it was estimated that she'd be between five and seven pounds. Today she comes in at a whopping fifteen pounds! With ridiculously tough jaws, she chews through every toy given to her. High energy and a lack of socialization has led to a few issues such as whining at every noise, almost uncontrollable excitement upon seeing any person, and aggression towards larger dogs. Despite these issues, she's a very friendly and intelligent dog that learns tricks fast. She's also a bit of a coward as she's afraid of her own food bowl. Over all though, she's a wonderful dog that makes up for her small size in sheer strength and attitude. She's not a fragile little pup, that's for sure. She's really very smart and tends to catch on to thing pretty quickly.

As far as small pets go, I'm not sure I can help. I've had limited experiences with caged animals. If it didn't have to be an aquarium, I would recommend rats. I had two and they were wonderful. Playful and very smart. People underestimate these little creatures. They're very sweet and very social but also wickedly smart. You definitely have to have patience with them as they're intelligent little acrobats that will continuously impress you. They learn tricks too. Even easier than a dog, I'd say. But I wouldn't keep them in an aquarium. They need to climb around and move though they do sleep most of the day. The only other thing I can say is that bearded dragons are supposed to be fantastic. I researched keeping geckos and pretty much everything said bearded dragons were great, especially for beginners. The equipment they need is costly though. I didn't actually research bearded dragons, but pretty much all lizards need certain things. The aquarium of course, heating lamps, places to lay, etc.

I guess most people know I have two cats by now. I have two cats, if you didn't already know! I got them both in the same year, a couple of months apart. ARE YOU READY FOR STORY TIME? I'MA GIVE YOU STORY TIME.
The first family he lived with named him Ice, and because their family was so big with multiple dogs, cats, birds and children, he didn't really get a lot of attention. That led to him literally screaming at night as if he was being slaughtered, obviously because he has no volume control. After he was about a year old they tried to get rid of him and a friend of mine took him in with her two cats, a male and female. He got along great with the female but got into serious fights with the male, in which his ear got torn, and she was looking for a new home after doing everything she could for 2 months.
I'd just adopted my first cat a couple of months prior and taken her along with me to visit my friend and her cats. Minke got along great with her, so my friend asked me if I wanted to take him in. I said sure, let's try this, if it doesn't work out we knew of a couple who ran a cat sanctuary for disabled and sick cats he could go to.
It was difficult to deal with him at first - I was just a first time cat owner, and then immediately took on a disabled cat who was ignored in his first home and had no manners. It was frustrating and I cried a few times! But with time we learned to communicate with each other, I set boundaries for him and now I can't imagine my life without this bugger. He was born in August 2010 so he'll be turning 7 soon!
I leash trained him, he loves car rides and he even enjoys rides on my bicycle in a little carrier on the back!
A few months later, my friend called me up. "Sanne, we found a stray young kitten in my mom's lease car. I know you've been looking for a cat, would you like to take her in? She's black with white paws and a white chest!" I agreed immediately. It was quite a journey for her, my friend's mom was supposed to take care of her overnight but misunderstood and thought she was given another cat for herself (she already had 10). She called the shelter and someone came to pick her up. They had a hard time catching her because she was so scared. My friend's brother ended up visiting the shelter and paying to get her out, keeping her in his bathroom overnight instead.
The next morning I drove to my friend's place and her brother met me. She'd been tucked away in his shirt, warm and comfy, for the entire ride. She was extremely emaciated and tiny, with massive bat ears on her head. She fit in my hand easily! It was love at first sight. I named her after an old character I had on the site. My family is Frisian, as is my surname, so both my cats have Frisian names to match.
I took her to the vet straight away. They estimated her at about 7 weeks, she was flea infested and malnourished. She was given some medication for worms and I bought anti-flea meds for kittens. At first she was very mistrusting of people (obviously, after what she went through!) but with some (forced) affection, lots of spoiling and a lot of food she got very attached to me. Two weeks later I went in to the vet's with her for her shots, and they told me was actually closer to 12 weeks because she was already teething. She gained weight rapidly and grew up into a healthy, loving cat!
For a couple of years now she's had issues with a hot spot on her abdomen/leg. This was after I got her fixed. She tore out her stitches and the vet diagnosed her with a form of OCD - if there's a scratch, or a small irritated spot, she will lick endlessly and make it a lot worse in a vicious cycle. We're still treating it and I think we found a winner with an essential oil/extract spray that deters licking and promotes healing.
As for her overall demeanor, she's skittish of people, especially when they're tall and loud, but once they sit down she'll come investigate and cuddle. She's extremely friendly and gets along with other animals well. She's fiercely protective despite her small size, and even launched herself at my sister's American Stafford when he accidentally startled my other cat. I'm 100% convinced that if anyone were to try and hurt me or Minke, she'd go flying at their face and claw them to hell and back.
Dette also walks on a leash and knows some basic commands she listens to fairly well. I trained her to sit for treats, and she too rides a bike basket! She also doesn't care for fireworks, she'll happily roll onto her back and have her tummy scratched while fireworks are blasting right outside my apartment. I think this is because every NYE she's been around a deaf cat who doesn't respond, and myself who doesn't respond. She's easy to handle and allows me to do everything!
I've learned so much from my kitties! They're my babies, they're my support and I'm wholly convinced they love me as much as I love them. They always come first in my life and I'm not sure what I'd do without them.
VIDEO BONUS! This is how my cats go to the vet's.
For bonus, I had an Easter brunch with them this year in the most crazy catlady way possible.

Minke
He's my deaf little fluffbutt who sheds more than I ever thought possible. (I mean, just look at that cat tree!) He was born fully deaf, is completely pure white, has two green eyes and is so extremely people friendly he turns avid cat-haters into "Omg I'm taking him home with me I love cats". He doesn't like being picked up and held, but he will root in your lap the moment he gets a chance. His favorite place to nap is with me beneath the covers, kneading my tummy. The first family he lived with named him Ice, and because their family was so big with multiple dogs, cats, birds and children, he didn't really get a lot of attention. Dette
My special little princess right there. I had looked after my friend's two cats for a month because she broke up with her ex, had no place to go and had to stay with a friend where cats weren't allowed. I had never taken in cats before but I figured, it was only a month, by then she'd have a new place and could take them back! Although her cats were stressed by being taken out of their home and staying in a strange new places, and acted out a bit because of it, I'd fallen in love with cats at that point and missed them when they were gone. I told my friend I was going to look for a cat to take in!A few months later, my friend called me up. "Sanne, we found a stray young kitten in my mom's lease car. I second what Pomkeki said, what about rodents kept in a (large) cage? Rats and guinea pigs can make excellent pets and are often allowed in no-pet apartments because they're typically confined/very small in comparison to cats and dogs! Don't know the details of your lease but it might be worth a shot looking into, I have a lot of friends with rodent pets in your situation.
@Pomkeki: Can you share pictures sometime in the future? I'd LOVE to see all your babies! They sound so precious!
@Ghost36: Oh gosh your babies are so pretty! Frost looks so handsome, does he have hearing problems? If a cat is 100% white they have a genetic mutation that suppresses their coat color and causes hearing problems/full deafness in about 75% of all white cats, so it's unusual to find a pure white cat with full hearing. I'm always excited to learn about that!
I also want to say I appreciate the comments I've seen on indoor cats so far. It breaks my heart when I hear of and see so many cats die from being outdoors. Thank you for keeping this in mind and being so conscious of it.
@Sanne : Frost is definitely my pretty boy and everyone loves him because of his looks and his attitude. He is a wonderful cat though it's a bit of pain having to watch every little thing to make sure he can't reach something he'll eat. No, despite his pure white coat and light blue eyes, we have never noticed any hearing problems with him. In fact, he hears so well that he can hear his name in just about anything.
You have some beautiful little ones too! I'm rather obsessed with eye color, especially with cats, and Dette's eyes are quite stunning against her coat. It makes me wish I could take some pictures.

Oh man! Minke smells everything a mile away, if he's deep asleep and he smells food, he wakes up immediately and is in full attack move. It's kind of insane!
And I agree! She has beautiful eyes. My phone's camera lens is badly scratched/cracked so I can't get the clear pictures I want for a really nice closeup, unfortunately. The best my phone can do lol
I wish I could help. I have a Canon camera and an obsessed with taking close ups. It would have been lots of fun. But she's still beautiful, with or without a good camera, and Minke seems like a good cat too.
You both have very nice cats! I'm sure they're glad that they're loved and appreciated. All of the photos are great, too.
You guys wrote so much that I feel obligated to think of other pet stories, lmao. Luna does this thing where she somehow knows the moment I'm awake (I guess my breathing changes) and she'll use her claws to pull the blanket away from my neck because she wants me to pet her. It works because I have the resting body temperature of a corpse and I need the blanket, so she'll keep at it until she gets what she wants. One time she bolted out of the house, climbed three feet up a tree, and then panicked because she thought she was stuck. I've watched mice run directly across her paws and she did nothing to stop them; if she does catch them, she only eats their back feet. She loves catnip and if I put the jar down for even a second she'll stick her entire head into it and start sneezing. She can open any door that doesn't have a spherical handle.

TIME TO TALK ABOUT MY DOGGOS
-Inserts appropriate music to read to here.-
Say hello to my little fluff balls, Dolly (black) and Ruby (white). They're both the same breed of dog, Lhasa Apso, despite being under the average size and over the average side respectively. I love them both very much, but let's get to why I love them!
Dolly | This is Dolly! She's my little baby and the youngest of the two, being 8 years old! She still looks like a puppy regardless. However she acts incredibly cat like, never wants to play with toys, but on occation she will want to play and bite you gently. But most of the time, she prefers a nice lap to lay on and sleep, and lots and lots of cuddles! Dolly here has helped me with a lot of anxiety, and is my general go-to doggo to seek comfort. She's always been there for me when I'm alone with no means of contact, being too depressed to do so. |
One of the best things about her is that we share the same birthday! We were both born on the 27th of October, how cute is that? (Or weird. I'm very attached to my baby don't judge me.)
Dolly is the runt of a large litter, the smallest of nine puppies. Though, she was definitely the cutest. Here's a puppy picture of when she was only a few weeks old!
And here's an even cuter picture of her in the first time she's seen snow!
gah, I don't know what i'd do if she wasn't in my life. She's so important to me and a very good friend. Also, very sassy and yappy, but I love that about her.

Ruby | Now here's the bigger and older doggo of the two! This is Ruby, our more excitable and playful dog. She also loves cuddles, but she's a little more excited about them compared to Dolly. She will happily pester you for strokes all day long if she could, and sometimes rolls onto her back while making a stroking motion with her paws asking you to pet her. It is the CUTEST! |
Just look at them little teeth of hers! She's always grinning, and always happy to see you.
Before we bought Ruby, her previous owners called her Pickle. I don't quite remember how many puppies was in her litter, nor do I have any puppy pictures on this computer (sadly. she was even cuter than Dolly was as a puppy!), but I do have some silly pictures of them mostly. Ruby was born on the 23rd of December, very close to Christmas! She's also 9 years old, so she'll be 10 this year!
Now here's some doggo spam.
I often give them silly nicknames as well. I often call Dolly Chicken Nugget, Your Littleness and Doofy while I call Ruby Teethy, Coconut Rum and Rubik Cube. I love giving them dumb names.
Before this gets too cheesy I have one more thing to show.
Dog spotted.
THIS IS KALI.
(Yes, she has her own stocking for Christmas snacks and toys.)
Kali is a Sacred Birman cat, who was born the 18th of December 2015.
Background
I've always wanted a cat, but my parents had never allowed it for various reasons. When I moved away from home, I moved into a 1-room apartment(not one bedroom, one room) and unfortunately, I didn't think it would be okay for me to get a cat when I had long hours at work + a very small apartment.
Then my boyfriend and I moved in together in his apartment, and I started planting the seed that we should get a cat. He generally likes animals, although didn't see himself as a cat person and said no.
Fast forward to us living together for a year, I had to go through a pretty terrible surgery which I was incredibly scared about. My boyfriend knew how scared I was to go through with the surgery, and told me that once I was back on my feet we could get a cat! I immediately started googling, trying to narrow down what kind of cat I wanted and how much care the different cats would need. We talked about getting a shelter cat, but neither of us were certain that we were able to handle a cat who might have issues from former bad experiences, and we also wanted a kitten to be able to really shape it into the cat we wanted. My boyfriend had a few criteria when it came to cats; friendly towards people and dogs(his sister has dogs), movable so we could take it with us to the family house in Sweden and not bald.
So, I started searching to find something we could agree on, and ended up finding the Birman. Generally, Birmans are more attached to their humans than they are to their home and have no problems with dogs. I presented the idea to my boyfriend, he agreed and I had a breeder on the phone within minutes. Or maybe seconds. I had found one with a litter on the way, and the kittens would be adoptable around the time I got back on my feet. We agreed that my boyfriend and I could come and see them 2 weeks after my surgery, and even though I could barely walk or talk, we somehow made it out there to see the kittens. Since we were the first, we could choose between 3 different kittens from that litter, and even though it was a tough choice, we ended up with "Esmah" who was renamed Kali:
She's now a grown lady, and she's the cuddliest little piece of fluff you'll find. She wakes us up every morning to get her morning cuddles before breakfast, and she actually threw(knocked) a reading lamp at my face to wake me up once.
We've taken her to the Swedish woods a few times, and she walks pretty well on the leash there. She doesn't like going out in the city, but she likes the walks to the lake in Sweden. When we're in Sweden, we put her on the long leash outside to be sure she won't get lost/hurt. She loves bumble bees, and will chase them around in the grass and eat them if she's fast enough to catch them.
My sister in-law has 2 dogs, and while one of them absolutely loathes cats, the other has a serious crush on Kali. He really wants to get up and close with her, but she wants none of him, and sulks away from him. It's hilarious to watch. My sister in-law told me, that her dog had been searching for Kali a good 24 hours after we left with her. Poor thing.
Oh, she also has her own facebook page!
