I've posted a topic where I looked for a handicapped character to RP with.

I am a person that tends to try new things in life and in RP too. One of them was Furies - didn't like it. I watched a movie with a character in a wheelchair and got the idea that I can RP with a handicapped character. It will be something new for me and I am pretty excited to see how things will turn out.
My question is: Have you roleplayed with handicapped character (yours or your partner's). What does a person that play the handicapped character looks for? Did you enjoy the rp? Can you share some of your experience?
Played a blind character once. It was in a very fantasy heavy setting focused on combat, though, so obviously he had to have dare devil powers so he could even have a chance at keeping up with the other party members. It was quite a challenge to expunge all color and visual imagery from my writing. Instead, (thanks to many tips from my partners in writing) I had to focus on the other sense to describe a scene. A luscious sunset on the horizon to one character was a faint fading heat to my character's face. All of the grand detail of one character's gorgeous attire was entirely lost on mine, and instead was "seen" for much more basic aspects: The stench of feces on their feet (they were an animal husbander), the height of which their voice was emenating to give height, the way they walked, etc.

Very stress inducing. Very fun in retrospect, especially the challenge to others who had to roleplay with him. Standard things like waving caused awkward moments even if my daredevil could sense the wind changing. A more realistic portrayal of the blind would be even more difficult. Like... what kind of stories would benefit from their being blind?

I suggest reading the VN Katawa Shoujo if you are interested in a slice of life / romance story of disabled people. It might give you ideas. Warning though: It's weeb matieral and has optional lewd stuff.
One of the nearest and dearest characters I have is partially wheelchair bound. I find it difficult but I can take that and vent that in my writing as his own frustrations. All in all, I find it very enjoyable, but I think that's just because I have a really well-developed character in him that I love very much.

Woah that sounds crazy the way you have to describe things, totally something I've never done before. I'm into fantasy with heavy fighting plots and maybe that's why I've never roleplayed with characters like that. And there's no way I can pull it off.

And how did you decide to make him partially wheelchair bound?

hm, interesting topic. I suppose it depends on which definition of "handicapped" we're dealing with...

I enjoy characters who are, for the most part, socially handicapped, as in having a hard time fitting in with everyone else, and to take it to a level of fantasy, a character born a werewolf, who hasn't quite reached the "First Change" (i.e. changing into a human form) and yet thrust into a world full of humans, where she has to skulk in the shadows for fear of being killed or perhaps exploited for profit. With supernatural abilities, she could easily tear through the ranks of any mob, but obviously any action taken would result in bringing undue attention to herself and amass severe consequences that would make living simply unbearable.
