Jamie was meeting his new roommate today, and although they'd talked briefly before, he was still nervous. He'd had to take a roommate because he couldn't afford the two bedroom apartment ten miles from the ocean. He'd used the second room for practicing what little magic he knew, and he was disappointed that he couldn't afford to live alone. He'd miss being able to use that second room, but what could you do? He just wasn't paid enough, so he'd tidied up as best he could and hoped that she wouldn't look too hard at the various stains in the carpet left from magical mishaps.

Rose hummed softly to herself as she wandered around the neighborhood, looking for the apartment building she would start living in from today. All she carried with her was a small duffel bag which contained most of her belongings. She had been living quite happily with her roommate before, in a nice apartment which wasn't too far from the beach but close enough to the city. Unfortunately, things hadn't gone so well - her roommate caught her in the midst of practicing her sea magic, and in absolute horror, kicked her out. Rose felt pretty down after that - she had nowhere to go, and she had lost another close friend because of her abilities. Being a sea witch, in her opinion, had its ups and downs. But being the overly optimistic woman she was, she pushed through the tough times and only focused on the positives. And now she was here, in an unfamiliar area, about to meet her new roommate. Anxiety caused her heart to pound in her chest - she hoped that she wouldn't mess up this potential friendship with her foolish shenanigans.
She soon found her destination, and took the elevator up to the apartment. She approached the door, took in a deep breath, and then promptly rang the doorbell before waiting patiently.

Jamie almost jumped when the doorbell rang; he'd been letting a cup of chamomile tea steep in an attempt to calm his nerves. He'd never had to practice magic while living with someone non-magical, so he was worried he might mess up and get in trouble for... something? The police would probably never believe someone claiming that their roommate did magic, but it was still very nerve-wracking to think about. He went and opened the door.
"Hi! You must be Rose," He guessed from the duffel bag she held. He stepped aside nervously and went over the apartment with his eyes again to see if any of his magical supplies were within sight; his room was currently filled to the brim with magical odds and ends, ranging from some tiny bags of sea salt, to a few large jars of swamp water, and to huge tomes filled with runes.

Rose smiled politely at her new roommate, glad that he looked rather friendly. She'd try especially hard not to get kicked out of this apartment. "I am. Then you must be Jamie, right?" She stepped inside slowly once he stepped aside, looking around the apartment with a sense of awe. It already felt like home to her. Nothing seemed too out of place or intimidating, and that made her nerves at ease. She turned around to face Jamie and she grinned brightly at him. "Nice to meet you." she said happily, extending her hand out to him.
"Right. Nice to meet you, too." Jamie replied while shaking her hand.
"Well, here's the kitchen and the living room." He gestured to each respected area of the open room and strode across the floor to an open door. "Here's your room, there's mine, and the bathroom. The building has a laundromat on the first floor. Here's your key." He walked back over to her and held out the small piece of metal.
He was relieved at how kind she seemed; he didn't think that this would be so bad, as far as nonmagical roommates went. And if she ever found out about his magic, then maybe she'd even be ok with it, though he knew it was a far stretch. He'd scared away many a friend all throughout his school years because he had been foolish with his magic; he'd once tried to curse someone using a toilet, and that had ended far from well.

Anyone would think that the apartment was just boring and regular. However, Rose saw it as something else. She saw the apartment as a safe haven, and she had a tremendous amount of gratitude for her roommate to have the decency to share an apartment with her. It would be rather awkward at times getting used to this, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Now, her fate was purely based on her actions. Her abilities frightened her at times, but they often made her curious. She couldn't just blatantly ignore the fact that she actually could use magic. She took the key from him and nodded. "Thank you." she said. "I'll, um, try my best not to be a bother to you." she said with a small laugh.
"Oh, not at all! I'm sure if either of us is a bother, then it's me." Jamie said with a nervous laugh. Rose really did seem very kind, though. He was anxious about having to do magic with her in the apartment; he'd recently been selling small charms, potions, and spells to other magic users in an attempt to make some extra money. He doubted that he'd be able to live as comfortably as he did without it, so it was necessary for him to continue the small business.
"Do you know your way around town or are you new here?" He asked her.
"Do you know your way around town or are you new here?" He asked her.
"Trust me, you're not a bother at all." Rose reassured him. There was always that initial awkward tension that surrounded people whenever they first meet - especially if they're going to be roommates. That was obviously present, and she secretly hoped that the tension would simmer down at some point. "I'm kinda new to this area, to be honest." she responded with a hesitant smile. "I used to live more in the city, not as close to the coast. But I don't mind," she said, subconsciously tucking a stray strand of her hair behind her ear. "it's nice. You can literally smell the sea from here. Plus, it's not too far from school and work." she said happily.
"Yeah, it's really nice here. A lot of the shops and things are really close together. There's a wal-mart down the road and a cvs on the corner." He said, rather uncertain how to proceed the conversation while not being awkward. He shoved his pair of sunglasses back on the top of his head.
"What are you studying?" He asked her. He himself hadn't been able to go to college; his mother had died early, so he and his sister had been in many foster homes. Their last one hadn't helped them when they turned eighteen, instead kicking them out as fast as possible. They'd had to find their own housing, but she'd recently gone to live with her boyfriend. A non-magical one at that. His sister had decided to stop doing magic, arguing that she didn't know enough to teach herself anymore. Jamie knew that he'd never be able to give magic up.

Rose nodded, glad that she was in an area where resources were abundant. That would make life more easier for her. She shifted her weight back and forth, leaning on one leg and then leaning on the other. She was especially fidgety today. "I'm majoring in early childhood education." she responded. She exhaled a soft sigh and looked behind him into the kitchen. "Would you like me to make dinner? It's the least I could do to express my gratitude for letting me in here." she said bashfully.
"Yeah, you can if you want to, but I should be the one thanking you. You're saving my ass by paying half the rent." He said with a small smile. "Do you want me to help? I think there's enough in the pantry to make rigatoni, and I picked up some fresh snap peas earlier. Maybe not an ideal to go with pasta, but it's the only veggie I have right now." He said, laughing nervously at the end. He readjusted the sunglasses sitting atop his head.
"The pots and pans are down here," He said, crouching down to open a cabinet to the left of the stove.

Rose laughed softly, begging to differ with his words. If his offer hadn't shown up, she didn't know where she would be. She nodded and inspected the pantry, looking over the various ingredients that sat there. Cooking was a hobby of hers; she enjoyed it often whenever she cooked with her mother. "It's alright. I'm sure I can make something out of it." she reassured him. She crouched down beside him to the opened cabinet, already starting to pull out the equipment she'd need to make her dish. "Thanks. I'll go ahead and get started on dinner then." she said, deciding to unpack once she finished.
"Alright," Jamie said. He took the peas from the fridge and began to wash them, suddenly feeling uneasy about all of the magical things in his room. Some of it might just look odd, but others, like the grimoires full of spells, were obviously magical. He hadn't had the room or the time to try to hide everything, so there was even some unfinished magic out on his desk. He'd gotten very used to putting everything out on the kitchen table and leaving everything as it was, but he supposed he'd have to keep everything in his room and put as much of it away as he could. He couldn't imagine the horror that could be on Rose's face if she walked in while he was doing a spell.
Whenever Rose was alone, she took the opportunity to experiment on her powers. Now that she couldn't do that, a part of her just yearned to be alone so that she could use her powers. Her hands tingled, and she pressed her lips in a thin line to suppress the urge to reveal who she really was to her roommate. She was positively certain that he wouldn't take the truth nicely. And usually she wasn't the type to keep secrets, but this was a particularly dangerous secret that she had to be cautious of. She took out the pasta from its container and started washing them. "So, do you work around here?" she asked, just for some general small talk to get to know one another better.
"Yeah, at a bookstore a few streets over," He said, setting the peas aside and walking to the pantry for the marinara sauce. "Do you have a job yet? I think there were a couple of restaurants down that way that are looking to hire." He was happy for the normal topic of conversation. It was a good distraction from the anxiety that all of the magical things crammed into his room was giving him.
"A bookstore? Nice. I might pay you a visit sometime." Rose joked. Reading was one of her favorite pastimes, and she was glad she found someone who hopefully enjoyed reading in a technology-driven world. She continued cooking, making sure that the pasta wasn't getting overcooked. "I work at a bakery that's nearby here. I think I'll have to figure out where it actually is tomorrow after my classes." she said with a soft laugh.
