Some questions for you folks:
  • How long have you been playing for? How did you start?
  • What are your favourite editions?
  • Any memorable experiences? Good or bad
  • Do you DM?
  • Who are your favourite D&D OCs, past or present?

I'm in multiple campaigns that are active intermittently, so I have a handful of characters, which I tried (and failed) to explain briefly. I never get to talk about them and got excited idk:

Ebonoch- a tiefling/rogue who appeared out of nowhere and plagued the King's city with his indiscriminate thievery. When the Royal Guard finally caught him, we was offered a deal to be revoked at any time: pardoning his crimes in exchange for pledging his allegiance as an archer with the Guard. Since it was better than the chopping block, Ebonoch agreed. He was sent out with a holy relic recovery party a few years later (the premise of this game was that deities had been fighting and dropping their weapons; every kingdom was scrambling to gain control of them). I can't count how many times I've crit failed an attack roll and shot an arrow into his foot.

Yanorae- dragonborn/paladin. After her battalion was slaughtered in a fight against a warlord where she felt they had not been aggressive enough, she took justice into her own hands (claws?) and warped the concept, splitting from her holy order to begin meting out judgement as she saw fit. She became known as a tyrant-killer who collected the flags of her slain targets and pursued rumors of injustice across the country. She knits tiny sweaters for lizards and snakes in her downtime. This was more of a plotless dungeon-crawling campaign to introduce my roommates to D&D.

Captain Wes- human/fighter from a steampunk campaign. As a youth he left the small island he was born on to join a passing sky pirate fleet in the hopes of finding adventure and fortune. However, they flew too far east and encountered hostile Russian sky pirates, who commandeered their ship and threw the crew overboard. Fortunately, Wes landed in a lake, and after blundering through the wilderness he made his way back to civilization. He fell in with the criminal underworld and built up a reputation as a mercenary over time. He currently pilots an airship of monster hunters and has an atrocious fashion sense. We're talking leopard fur on leather, here.

Cecelia Wickes- human/physician from a Victorian-fantasy campaign where the characters are trying to prove the existence of monsters, cryptids, and the occult to the flourishing scientific community. CC was a doctor who discovered a werewolf among the university faculty. In her attempts to reveal him for what he was, she destroyed her reputation and was branded a crackpot. Her medical license was revoked and she was outcast to a backwater district, where she became known as the slightly unhinged/alcoholic sawbones doctor. She's on the warpath to prove monsters are real and clear her name. She tries to convince anyone to walk through her door that they need something amputated. She has a bog mummy named Peat living under her font porch. He likes to grab people's shoes.

Kibi Wireman- a machine-augmented human from a cyberpunk campaign. An ex-street racer, Kibi was body-modded to the point where they lost the ability to discern if they were human, machine, or even real ("cyberpsychosis"). They had an episode during the middle of a race and veered off into the proverbial sunset, and their rapidly diminishing empathy left a string of police assaults in their wake. They sought refuge in the lower levels of the planet, where they were soon drawn in by the violence and free-for-all nature of robot dogfighting. They operate as a bouncer under the handle "Proxy" and share an absolutely garbage apartment with their best friend, a drug-addled bookie. Their security system is a Roomba vacuum with a knife taped to it.
I love it but any time I start an RPG with friends they never work out.

Back in high school though I was a part of Geek Club and we played D&D there, just as always I was the combat medic because no one ever wants to be support; my group was a dragon wizard (who was INEPT at healing magic), a robot from another world (also INEPT at any sort of self healing and healing of others), and a bunch of adventurers who - as you can see the theme here - SUCKED AT HEALING. e.e All anyone wants to do is blow stuff up, no one ever thinks of support roles.

It was a great time, the only D20 I ever rolled was while he was passed out and it was simply to fart in defiance at the creepy ass monster that konked him on the head with a rock - the crit roll was so "good" that he pooped himself, the nasty smell of which allowed my party to find me in the caves.

I did Pathfinder with some pals years after the D&D in high school and I was pretty much the medieval version of light infantry with about one hundred pounds of gear ranging from stuff to save my character's life, to saving the life of others, to having a rudimentary E-tool that came in handy for beating some tail. I was a Ranger with the subclass of like Hunter of Guerrilla or something? The class was meant to mimic a special operator I think as it had a lot of abilities meant to totally wreck house in unconventional ways. I'd ride along on a horse or a boat, or try to otherwise stay relatively unseen - we had a barbarian that went to fistfight, yes, I mean FIST FIGHT, a dragon. I spent about five grand in healing supplies and he still almost died on me, worse yet, once he was able to walk he ran at the dragon again. What killed the dragon you might ask? Well, fortunately our dwarf mage had some high class artillery like spells and our rogue had basically built themselves to be machine gun rapid with ranged weapons. The Barbarian also had a pet, it was a rabbit named Bunny. Bunny ate a man. Full on Monty Python style ate a man.

I'd love to play D&D or Pathfinder again, the stories I have to tell from it are priceless. It is like that show Untold Stories from the E.R. but more "Why did I sign up for this?!" and less actual professional medical talk as things fall apart. Life lessons were learned, one of them being that I hate people XD
My character is based on D&D, I have never played a tabletop game because I have not had time and because I am too shy.

I was introduced to the Forgotten Realms through books and through games like Baldur's Gate. I am used to the 2nd edition but have heard from most of my rp buddies that 3.5 is best. I loosely apply the rules of the game to my character, but I have also taken some creative liberties.

My favorite character is Janella, though I did have a dark elf named Erilyn for a few years I was quite fond of.

I've had good and bad experiences during free form rp, the bad was mostly due to people not wanting their characters to have any flaws or be vulnerable in any way. But I've had lots of good experiences, from Underdark excursions to adventures on the seas.

I have played in an online D&D group years ago and found it enjoyable, and I saw where someone is inviting people to a Pathfinder game here in the forums, but I really can't sit down for hours at a time to play.

I've been playing D&D since high school! I have DMed two campaigns before, but not since I was a freshman in college ... though I did do a 5e oneshot for New Years and it was SO FUN. I really like 5e. I started with 3.5 and thankfully never had to deal with exploitative bs from my players, then did 4e, which I liked at first but now don't, lol. Too many damn powers. I've also dabbled in GURPS, Mistborn, and All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

My favorite moment was when my DM gave us a spoon that turned water into gruel. We were on a bridge over a scary lake so I dropped the spoon in, turning the lake to gruel and killing the monster. XD Also, in my game, I made this giant wurm monster and wanted the players to get creative about fighting it. I had intended they use blackpowder or poison, but they ... filled the wurm's body cavity with caltrops <.< It was amazing.

Currently I'm in a 4e game that is heavily houseruled and has been going on for 7.5 years. It's almost over. My character is Ragnar, a dwarven knight whose lands, wife, title, and very NAME were taken from him when he was found to be a worshipper of Kord. (Kord is the son of the winter goddess Kala, who had plunged the world into eternal winter, so worship of him was forbidden even though he wasn't explicitly evil.) During a heated fight, wherein the gods were fighting as well, Kord has a change of heart and relinquishes his ties to his mother. He picks Ragnar up from the battlefield and makes him his Anointed One. It was totally ballin. Later, Ragnar became an angel, and then a god himself--the god of sovereigns and righteous war, and we eventually killed Kala.

I also am in a Mistborn campaign wherein I play a murder hobo. <.<

I absolutely adore D&D. I've been playing for only a couple years, and I forget how I started, but I remember having a lot of fun with it. I started with 3e and it still holds a place in my heart in all of its bizarre versatility and sheer amount of options, but my favorite edition is by far the fifth, as it is way more directed toward what I like in my games - story, drama, roleplaying and simplicity.

I do DM! I am currently running two games in an RPR group based on two different campaign settings - Planescape and Ravenloft. One of them is a large, epic tale of the multiverse going mad, the other is a more personal story about the characters and the strange horrors of the Demiplane of Dread. I love playing the game, but I also like to DM a lot. In a perfect world, I'd play and DM in equal amounts.

My current characters are Flint the gamblin', drinkin', tavern brawlin' dwarf wizard, Elee the bandit princess warlock, Laura the mysterious wanderer, and Tel'ath the mute plane-hopping monk. They are all a load of fun for different reasons, and I enjoy playing them all equally. I also played a bard luchador in a recent one-shot game, and he was a lot of fun as well, though I'm not sure I'd like using him in anything serious <.<
D&D is one of those things I just can't get enough of. I started playing for about 4 or 5 years ago, and I was terrible at it when first introduced. I didn't care for the rules at all, but as soon as I forced myself to sit down and learn them, I was pretty much instantly hooked. I started playing with 3.5, but I only got good at the game by playing 5th edition. To this day 5th edition is still my favourite for how easy it is to get into and how it focuses on story driven games rather than playing with math.

Despite the fact I love creating characters, my preference goes out to DMing. I currently DM The Pirates Of Zephyr's Bane, a story of my own making featuring the best crew a captain could wish for. It's a wacky adventure with colourful characters, a lot of freedom and improvising. So far it's been going for 2 years and it's still going strong! Besides that I'm in three other games lead by my friends.

One of the more memorable scenes that comes to mind is the crew arriving on Parrot Island. Parrot Island was the wackiest encounter of the whole game. It started with the group's cleric getting body slammed in the face by a naked Gnome. Then they faced a wizard controlling laser shooting parrots, which then turns out to be a Lich, which afterwards got destroyed by the holy light of Pierce Brosnan shining down from the heavens, levelling the team up by just a wink. It was the weirdest thing I had ever written and I have never even tried to replicate it. Parrot Island is forever in our hearts.

Some of the OCs I currently use are all on RPR. Most of my characters are D&D inspired, but these ones are the most active.
Aearion the Blue, a Merman bard who travels the world to sate his wanderlust. Or so he'd have you believe. In truth he fled his village due to an entity known as the Water God invading it, taking over. Instead of fighting, Aearion fled. It's a shame he bears with him until this very day and what drives him to do good in the world. Though he dreams of fame and writing stories about his adventures in the Multiverse of Planescape, his end game is returning home one day and restore the Coral Reef to its former glory.

Bender of Iron Will is the pirate captain of Zephyr's Bane. He's an old man, having lived most of his life on the seas, adventuring and enjoying life as an outlaw. But with old age comes the thoughts past regrets and what the future holds for a man who's body is growing frailer every day. Bender seeks two things in his final days aboard the elemental ship; to retire rich and to live forever. The man is considered to be slightly insane, a common trait among tinkerers. Yet this slightly insane man is the perfect captain aboard a ship filled with even more insane sailors and adventurers!

Valder Odanar the Stout, First of his name, Breaker of Sieges and the Bane of Goblins. Once Valder was a proud knight. Always a hardheaded Dwarf, Valder wanted to make something of himself in his rather large family of nobles. As a middle child, the risk of being disregarded was a valid one. Sadly, his ambition caught the ire of rivalling nobles. Valder was never much for etiquette or tact, and thus it was easy to pin falsehoods on his character that caused him to lose his honour. Now Valder travels the lands outside of the safety of Ironfang Keep, working for reputable people in the hopes that they will vouch for his knighthood so he may one day claim his titles again. Now, however, his honour is the last of his troubles. Stuck in Ravenloft, the Dwarf must almost literally escape hell if he ever wishes to see the mountains again. A daunting task indeed.

Hava'lera the Hushed is a very different character from what I usually play. Hava is a Valenar Elf, a race of desert dwelling Elves known for their warrior culture. Their aggression is well known, as well as their efficiency in combat and their well bred horses. Hava'lera is a man devoted to his young homeland of Valenar, and is willing to do vile and terrifying things for his home and the people he calls friends, ranging from torture to the killing of innocents if need be. The man carries a secret with him. One many people want to know and has made him well known in Valenar. It was a secret so great he cut out his own tongue so he wouldn't risk telling it. He is part of the mercenary Warband known as Storm's Oath, the right hand of Elee Tel'Arrna, tracker and enforcer. He is about to uncover a big conspiracy regarding cultists and Djinn. The fight for his homeland has never been harder!

He also likes durums a lot.
To me, I wish I could get more into it honestly.

I've played for a total of maybe like 6 months now, which isn't very long so I'm not used to the whole talking out loud thing. I... don't even know which edition I played. DMing seems fun since I REALLY LIKE WORLD BUILDING. My favourite parts about D&D though is creating characters, coming up with shenanigans and stories but I'm personally not good at the math part of it.

I got into it because back in college, my best friend and two other friends at the time wanted to make a Pathfinder campaign together. I initially came up with the setting and details for this Asian Steampunk campaign, based in a floating city where we'd have our own airship and possibly island as a 'base' of operations. Think Guns of Icarus but with asian aesthetic mixed in, or a bit of bioshock infinite. I guess. From what I remember, the campaign was to defeat the corrupted General of the city whom was trying to take over and murder the royal family. We didn't ever end up doing that campaign but I still loved my two characters for it very much. Plus the weird npc I made for jokes. (The weird, old, senile, teleporting wizard who would screw with the party on occasion was my favourite.)

The first character I made was Clover; a short magic user (custom race using elf stats as a base i think) mainly used fire and lava based magic for blacksmithing and we kept joking that she was 'air' sick and throws up lava over the side of the ship during ship battles because of the motion sickness.

My other character was a Half-elf, former city guard that utilized a form of 'jetpack' wings to get around the floating city, named Yvette / Ibbie. She was the more ''serious'' one tbh. She used a exotic bladed scarf with the permission of the DM when I made her.

Since we never did that campaign, (tbh we stopped talking to the DM and our other friend after college but my best friend and I stayed in touch) so those 2 characters have been collecting dust.

Last year, my best friend invited me to join her boyfriend's D&D campaign so they taught me as much as I could handle. Still learning and don't remember most of how to play it but for his campaign, I played your standard, Barbarian.

His name was Kyros the Wise and he took on the bear totem. Big, older man, dark skin. REALLY fluffy, long, curly hair. For flavour, we agreed that when he used Rage, he would shift into a were-bear. Other then that, he was from a tribe of other were-bears. There wasn't much backstory on him other then that he knew one of the other party members (my best friend's character) whom was a Hermit Druid who lived in a hole in the woods. Barely spoke either bc that was my first time really sitting down to a real D&D campaign.

That entire campaign, my best friend and I didn't get to talk over our bard, tiefling, wizard and rogue w/e, bc the 4 of them kept trying to scam EVERYONE by selling TABLES at absurd prices. It was terrible. The best thing from that campaign though was when we used the random name generator in D&D to come up with the Mayor's name. The name came out to 'Apenis' and we sat there for a moment in silence before we all started screaming with laughter.

Then last but not least was a random character I made for a one-off campaign that was mostly for jokes. His name was 'Charles Lickens the Third' and he was tiefling sorcerer, forever cursed to live in the body of a cat. He also had a really deep voice and was just a little quirky. He went a little crazy being trapped in the body of a cat for so long. Charles entered the campaign by falling from the sky in a whirling ball of fire and death, crashing through the roof of the building the party was in. (Not my choice, it was literally all the DM.)

That's all I remember, the rest of the time we were all really drunk while we played.

All of these characters/scenarios sound amazing, lmao. D&D brings out the strange in people.

I can't remember many moments worth sharing. Even though I've been playing for eight years (started with 3, then 3.5, some homebrew stuff, and now 5e) a lot of the games I played were fairly generic. And huge. The group's shrunk from ten people to four.

I do remember
- our rogue stealing an elephant by placing a tiny bag on its head and then convincing everyone in town that it was, in fact, not an elephant
- playing a character who was so attractive that when our group was short on money he could just take his shirt off in a crowded area and (dice roll providing) have people throw coins at him
- that same character seduced a locked door into opening. Yeah, I had to come up with dialogue for that. It was weird.
- this character also had a brother with the lowest charisma stat possible, so he wore a bag on his head to avoid scaring people. We called him Sog, short for Soggy Bread, which was what his face apparently resembled
- our tank wore such an insane amount of armour that when she fell in a river she nearly drowned. It took three other characters to get her out
- our bard played an incredibly moving and emotional bagpipe solo that brought an entire town to its knees and convinced them to fund our new airship
- "fishing" for bulettes by harpooning cows from said airship as bait, then having everyone dangle down Mission Impossible style and stab at it when it grabbed on
- we needed a new flag for our ship. Instead of using literally anything else, one of our party members broke into a random house and stole some underwear
- I've critical failed a "put on pants" roll multiple times

Well I want to play with you now

This remind anyone else of the Goonies or Little Rascals? XD

Will come up with a proper response later, but bless this thread. <3

I played in a one-shot game a few days ago, and decided to fill all my 1st level slots with Grease because I'd never tried it before and thought it seemed fun. Asking the DM to roll dex saves when his bosses came charging in and seeing his face when I made a (young) dragon slip on its butt has definitely been one of my favorite moments so far. There was also a group of apemen playing football which I cast it on and every time they got up and moved they'd fall again. So pretty much a normal game of football. :P

Also, wild mages. In just one session I summoned a unicorn, grew a beard made of feathers, and nearly killed all my friends.
I started playing with Cyberpunk 2020 sometime around ens of 2015, and quickly switched to Pathfinder. It was fun, no more no less. I almost always DMed.
In fact, I was DMing only because I was the only one that could eat a 300 pages book.
And, well, I'm quite fed up of DMing because of that. Because, well, my players wouldn't even eat their own book. So character creation was really a pain and they lost motivation quite fast.

But heeey, today I'm getting back on the tracks and creating a whole cast of characters, in case I finally find someone able to DM. Obviously 5e, because I love everything about that edition (except skills. Like what the fish ? No skill points ? Is that PF only ?).

My last and most loved character is named Silifrey Hornraven, a human fighter/bladelock. She started as a fighter, adventuring with her two childhood friends to seek knowledge. One day, she touched a cursed flamberge rapier, summoning the avatar of the god caged inside. It killed her friends and ate her mind. Eventually, she entered into a pact with the god and became his warlock.

Even if her patron is evil, she is not. She isn't even a lone wolf, in fact she hates to be alone because when she is, the whispers in her head become stronger and louder. But people don't stick around her for a multitude of reasons. Her left arm, the one she uses to cast her spells, is covered in crow feathers and ends with frostbitten raven talons, there is a feeling like scraggy black wings come out of her back, but they are too transparent to be sure, and they are barely physical, only an illusion in the corner of the eye. Finally, she talks to a creature appearing only in her eyes, so she looks a bit crazy. But in reality, she is quite friendly when you are nice to her, and she will surely take care of the ones who can see through the madness.
