I always like doing group rp's with a post order. It keeps people from getting left behind in the rp. But that also seems to be the easiest way to kill an rp as well if someone just stops posting.

I've always preferred in group RP the structure that's provided by a DM. If handled responsibly there will always be plenty room for players to drive the story in the direction they want and at the pace they want, while the DM handles most of the scene dressing and offers gentle guidance and inspiration. It helps leave openings for shy players as well as preventing people from assuming too much control. But really, so long as discussion is kept open it'll be easy to find a consensus and a story will emerge eventually. Events are useful as catalysts, but a RP can take place in a blank room and still be fun if the characters all have chemistry!

As for rules - they should protect players but not intimidate or stifle creativity. There may be some important criteria for applying to your game, but at most rules I'd prefer to always feel like guidelines, flexible depending on the situation.

I hope my rambling helps and wish you luck with your game!

I have a guilty pleasure in high-school roleplays. Though, that mostly stems from me having a soft-spot for closed circles, due to the fact that literally any type of character is typically forced to interact with people they wouldn't normally interact with.
Given how varied RP settings can be, I suggest just go with something you love as a creator. No matter how popular, say, Harry Potter can be - it won't work if you aren't passionate about it. That said, discussing popularity makes more sense once you have an idea on the genre you want to play. Say, if you're looking for some medievalish fantasy, Pathfinder would be a more popular opinion than FATAL, and for good reason. You should restrict your field first of all, though.
