Guys, I just got onto Netflix today, and I saw that Netflix made a Death Note movie! It has actual people instead of the anime drawings... Looks pretty creepy, though, and considering that the anime gave me nightmares, I'm not too sure it's a good idea to actually watch the movie... Just wanted to share :D

Has anyone actually watched it? Do the actors look like the characters?

Have not watched it, have no real wish to watch it. Only thing that would get me to watch it is seeing Ryuk. But, if I want that real time, I can just watch the Japanese movie.

Most fans of Death Note anime/manga were not happy about Netflix making their own adaptation. It could be good, who knows, but - considering what they did with Dragonball Evolution, and the fact that the live-action Ghost in the Shell has received poor reception - expectations are not high. And I don't mean "they" as in Netflix, I mean "they" as in Hollywood.

All I've heard are people complaining about it. Now, these people all have also watched Death Note previously... as for me, I had never seen it before and I watched the Netflix adaptation. I found it to be highly entertaining and thought-provoking all the way through. Without that high level of expectation that others had, I really enjoyed it.

If you think the Netflix abomination was thought provoking, you really need to watch the anime or read the manga. Then you'd understand why people aren't fond of it at all.

The bee, of course, flies anyway

Yellow, black. Yellow, black.
Yellow, black. Yellow, black.
To be fair, it's a bit rough to criticize a 100 minute film for not being as deep or as detailed as long form media. The manga is 12 volumes, the anime is over 12 hours of content.

A film adaptation is just that, an adaptation. A chance to experience the characters and story in a different form. The existence of the film doesn't negate the other media and can serve as an easy gateway for people to get into the Death Note universe and explore those other offerings. 'If you thought that was cool, you should check out the Anime/Manga!'

Sadly, because fandoms in general are terrible, people spend their time slagging the new adaptations, turning off people who might be interested in the property, and ending up costing the property as a whole.
