In the kingdom of Myria, there is the loving and peaceful merfolk. Harmony has lived in the ocean for years, until one fateful day. The day that the mermaids discovered humans.
The relationship between humans and mermaids were peaceful at first, and they worked together. That was until one day when the king died under mysterious circumstances. The humans blamed the mermaids, forcing them into hiding, and making stories against them.
To this day, humans have forgotten about the mermaids, and the mermaids have been in hiding. But one mermaid refuses to hide anybody longer. She is a defected Captain of the royal guard, and saves a boy from drowning. This boy has changed her world. She has fallen in a forbidden love, and if they were to kiss, he would die. A human kiss would cause a power transfer that kills the human, and turns the mermaid into one. This is how it is believed that the human king died, after kissing a mermaid.

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.
