I would love to have more people to play with over this game. I can't convince any of my friends to buy it.

Does Torchlight have an offline Single Player option too? (I wish my desktop had working internet that didn't drop every 5 seconds so I could get this and play with you all.)

Yes, it does. I even prefer to play the game single player about ten levels in front of whatever I'm doing online, so I can take my time interacting with the (admittedly hokey!) plot, and then play it again with friends when I don't have to worry about missing anything.

That makes a lot of sense

Then I must see if there is a non-Steam copy I can fetch. Huzzah!

By the way, there's no distinction between single and multiplayer characters, so if you ever get working internet, you can take your existing character and play with your friends, no need to level up again!
