So, I'm trying to revise an old villain character I had for a few RPs which I never got to use, and upon viewing her profile recently, I am now dissatisfied with how she turned out. So I scrapped almost all of her info, and am starting again from the beginning.
That's where you guys come in, if you're willing to spare some time and give me your thoughts about what I'm about to put on here.
Well, anyways. She is meant to be a villain, obviously. She much revolves around using deception, guile, charm, illusion, and black magic to do her bidding. The reason being for her being evil? I am not yet sure. Originally, she was just a sociopath, with her parents and guardians having raised her up to be that way, but I'm not too sure I want to go down that road with her again. I'm thinking about making her some sort of half-demon, giving her incentive to be chaotic and vile just because it's in her nature, but I feel that has been a bit too overdone. I've also had thoughts of her being a creation like a homunculus or something by a necromancer, or some other type of weirdo, originally being made to be deceiving scoundrel, whose prime purpose is to cause havoc, especially from paranoia, or from the inside.
Now concerning her abilities, she revolves heavily around her abilities to make curses, as well as being a natural at beguiling. She was intended to be a Witch/Beguiler character, with her being able to cause much chaos through her magic, devilish powers, and her silver tongue and natural charm.
Also, another thing which depends on her origins and original motivations, I'm having trouble deciding if she should be forced to do evil because of something (maybe through her extensive use in black magic caused her to be that way?), or if she knowingly does so, and craves chaos itself. (err, something a long the lines of that.)
Well, there ya go. I'ed love to hear your thoughts on this, if you are willing to do so.

My personal preference for villains are characters who utilize extreme measure to overcome hardship, only to end up becoming monsters themselves.
Were I going to design such a character, here's how I would personally go about it.
She was just a child when her village fell to Karguz the Necromancer. He was harvesting lives and souls to fuel his horrible power and before her very eyes, she witnessed him execute everyone she'd ever known. Then, when it was her turn to join her family in death, he stopped. Perhaps he'd already been sated, perhaps he saw something in her he desired. He never told her why, but instead of killing her, he took her as his own.
Back at his castle, she was made to serve. She poured his wine, scrubbed his floors, carried body parts to the bonfire... whatever menial, demeaning task needed to be done. He would punish her harshly for the smallest of transgressions and very rarely praise her for her successes. She learned how to be whatever he wanted her to be. To hide her pain, to sooth his ego. She learned to be perfect, and once she mastered that she gradually began working on learning his craft.
Rather than just a slave, Karguz began considering her an apprentice and was delighted to find she had a talent for magic, a talent he was proud to cultivate. He began thinking of her as a project, a wretched urchin that he was turning into something special, something powerful.
She murdered him in his sleep. Karguz, the mightiest necromancer of his generation, brought low by a girl he decided to keep as a pet with a ritual dagger he'd given to her as a reward for her studies.
Left with all of the Necromancer's research and resources, she began working for herself, amassing power so that none could ever victimize her again, no matter the cost.

Ooo, yes. I like that concept very much. Thanks for providing some feedback about this.
It's always heartening to see someone else who wants to play a bad guy/girl!
My character, Janella, is evil in part because of her upbringing. But she's also evil because whenever she did get away from her home, she was treated with prejudice and hostility. She had to make it by stealing and killing. Janella also wants things. She wants power, wealth, comfort, luxury, slaves. After living as a slave, and then having to rough it in the wilderness, she has a taste for the finer things in life, we could say.
Whenever you're making an evil character, it's important to establish just how evil you're character is, and why they are evil. Greed, trauma, pride, being a sociopath or sadist, having a superiority complex, revenge, these can all lead one down the road to being a villain.
And just what is your character willing to do? Are there things they won't do? My character is willing to do some horrendous things, but she likely wouldn't kill a child, because she'd see it as being too easy. An insult to her pride and profession. She's passed up on easy opportunities to steal, because it would have been too easy as well. She doesn't like feeling indebted to anyone, and has paid people for helping her when she didn't have to.
But she's also killed otherwise innocent bystanders because they were witnesses, harassed males with lewd comments, hurt people for fun, she's not afraid to get her hands dirty.
