So far only one in every dozen or so of the rps I go into ever get completed. Most of those don't even get halfway through! I'm wondering if this is a common problem, or if there is something wrong with my rping.

It is a common problem, but sometimes it is not anything a person can help. Due to a lost of desire to use a character, which can be caused by a number of reasons..

I think you're exactly right there.
Thank you for your feedback.
have you tried striking up a chat with your RP partners to find out what these reasons are in their own words? if not, then chances are they've totally forgotten about it! i know i do all the time.
also depends on your definition of 'completed'. i try to stick to short term goals nowadays instead of long term plots because then it's less likely that interest will fade or schedules will change before we get where we wanted to go.

I feel your pain. I'm a literate, advanced role player who is very flexible when it comes to setting, post length, plot and smut balance, where we rp, etc.
And my folder of flakes and other trash are much fuller than my number of active rps.
If ya want to get something going with one of my characters, let me know. Janella is the most fleshed out, the other two not so much. I created them specifically for rps that ended up falling through, and need to do something with them.
Try following up with them, see if they've been active lately. They could have lost interest and didn't want to tell you, or they are busy. If someone hasn't logged in for a while, I figure they are busy or lost their muse for rp.
If someone is active on the site but has not responded to our rp, even after a nudge, I figure they didn't like rping with me or lost interest in their character, my character, lost their muse just for our rp, whatever. I just make a mental note of it, avoid them in the future, and move on.

If I ever feel like someone might have abandoned my rp or forgot about it, I usually send them a bump. After that I wait a few days for them to reply before putting it into my archives. More often than not, I do not get a reply. I suppose the only thing to do is to continue until I get lucky enough that I find a good number of people who won't abandon the rp.
Yeah, I have started dozens of rps, figuring I will luck out sooner or later. It's gotten mixed results.
I try not to abandon RPs, and I try to post relatively often (daily), but every time I do join an RP and then actually RP, all I have been getting in response are typically lukewarm responses and uninterest, and the entire RP eventually dies. Once, I have tried to directly interact with a PC a couple of times, but then that same PC, on the next post completely ignored it.
I've joined a couple right now, and typically it starts out promising, with strong interest but eventually people begin to wane and RIP. Kind of discouraging. I can relate.
I have gotten through roleplays that have lasted a great while outside this website, and was genuinely fun (though I've never really been through one which ended to it's final conclusion, they all just waned off for whatever reason.), but perhaps something has changed.
