It is the distant future.The plague above has wiped out most living beings out. The human mortality rate is incredibly high. Species have gone extinct, and those who have adapted have become these savage, grotesque, and undomesticated entities. The few that survived went deep down underground in a last ditch effort to survive.
It was a success.
They’ve built a civilization, named Empyria, and lived without fear for the mysterious pestilence. Life became set in what appeared to be some sort of oligarchical government, ran by a council of elders who pushed through laws and other legal entities in the name of making the state more prosperous. And it was, indeed, very prosperous. The walls of the city only keep expanding.
However, there’s another side to the story. This plague is not the complete coming of the apocalypse. There have been reports of survivors. Those who have survived the disease develop strange powers. With these newfound powers, some even have been able to fend for themselves in the desolate and abandoned land. Most of them seek refuge from mutated creatures who now roam above uninhibited.
Fearful of the potential disease these survivors of the plague may have as well as the possible abuse of their abilities, those living underground decide to oust them. Thus the Anti Abnormal Administration (Triple A, AAA) was commissioned, and a war was waged between the Abnormals and the AAA. Though the technology that had been lost to the disease had managed to recover up approximately to the point of pre-Industrial era (limited electricity, steam engines, wired telephones, etc.), there has been rumors that there was a very large budget in military spending.
The war that has been waged managed to wipe out a good chunk of the city. After months of intense fighting, the battles seemed to have died down. The argument that the AAA has won is quite believable. Abnormals have gone into hiding, either sheltered by sympathizers or concealing themselves in slums and red light districts, whereas the AAA has over time established itself as the police force of society. It is not considered surprising to want to join the AAA, as propaganda for the cause is frequently distributed.
Now, years have passed since this great war, known as the War of Retribution, has happened. You are most likely one of the many people trying to survive in an underground society. Or, you may be an aspiring officer of the AAA. Even less likely, you have somehow survived every single odd and live in the shadows, trying to get by as an Abnormal.

Below Surface is a very expansive roleplay about the clash of ideals between humans who used technology to escape a devastating plague and humans who have survived the plague and evolved into what is considered to be different beings. But in the end, really is “abnormal”, and who really is “human”? Will you fight for the Abnormals , the Anti Abnormal Administration , or perhaps something else?
