It has been many years since the computer program, known as "The System", has conquered the world, separating it into the European Section (Europe, Russia, and Africa), the Asian Section (Asia and Australia), and the American Section (North and South America, Antarctica, the Pacific isles). The people are divided into four groups, the High, the Middle, the Low, and the Undesirables, each including a number of classes, including Scriber and Actor for the High, Sporter and Teacher in the Mid, Worker (The most common of the classes) in the Low, and Inferiors in the UD. Everyday life is controlled by the System and its closest associates, an order of men and women second to the System itself.

You work at a large office, with hundreds of fellow Workers from the Fort Areo area, Scribers calculating your every move, and Aaron Hawthorne, the figurehead of the System, encouraging and watching from the screen in your workspace. All goes still when a fellow Worker is taken by a Scriber for "Investigation", and is never seen again after that. Your life is turned upside down when you remember your friend being taken. Then there is a knock at your Tenant-House door...
