My plans to get a pet tarantula were vetoed by my flatmates (fair enough), so instead I introduce to you my rescue gecko!



Her skills include:
- standing in her water dish
- making the sand Smooth
- eating
- getting calcium all over her snout like some sort of coke fiend
- investigating
- having the coolest silver/pink eyes

The person I got her from was keeping her in a not-great tank with another leopard gecko, which you generally don't do, so a flatmate and I went 50/50 on the setup and put them in separate tanks. Even though one gecko was male and one was female they apparently never bred (could be stress, but my preferred theory is gay lizards). She's pudgy and was obviously bullying him for food. Both of them are around seven years old.

I'm caught between naming her something nice like Clementine or something like Debbie: Devourer of Gods. Or Special Gecko Agent Dana Scully. We'll see.

Feel free to show me your scaly children also.

I have a question out of curiosity: Do they only feed on living food? Or can they be feed "still" food? I know some reptiles like snakes will only feed on living food (or not, when theyre feeling like scaly divas). But i have no idea how gekos are to be cared :"D

Leopard geckos are pretty good eaters (especially this one), so while moving food is preferred they'll eat still food as well. I'm alternating between mealworms and crickets with some other things now and then as treats.

How long do they lice??

The females live to about 7 - 10, so I adopted this girl in her twilight years. The males can live up to twenty.

They seem like overall good pets! They aren't too big that they're hard to accommodate, and they're used to live closely to human in the wild (I've seen them more than once on my garden, terrace, and among unused debris), so that shouldn't stress them too much to be domestic I assume!

How do they react to humans? I'm sorry I ask a lot of stuff, I don't really have a lot of experience with exotic pets except having had a duo of lab mice and briefly, a toad :"D

These ones were bred in captivity, so they're a lot calmer than wild geckos to begin with (although they've been through a couple of rough houses and aren't 100% trusting of being handled, which is fine). I've only had her a couple days so I'm mostly just giving her space. She likes to investigate things I put near her tank and she looks at you when you talk. An A+ lizard.

Seems strange, do you know why females lives half the time of their males darlings?

She's a certified Good Girl™. In my professional opinion (?) I declare she deserves more treats, and more Happy (calcium) Dust.

Edit: Also the fact that they live 20 years is freaking me out. They're so smol so H O W. They have more life expectancy than dogs omg

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because their bodies create eggs even if they're unfertilized, which puts a strain on them. They also require more vitamins and fat than males for the same reason.

Thanks! If she could understand I'm sure she'd be pleased with the compliment. And it beats me; they're just hardy little desert lizards. Some zoos have managed to keep them to thirty.

I know about those! Those are so amazing abdhxbsnxk On the similar line, there are a little microscopic beings that can survive the space cold! They are colloquially called water bears, even Neil Digrasse Tyson spoke about them at Cosmos. They are chubby highlander micro piggies ahhh

They will eventually outlive us all and conquer the word to sate their calcium addiction, I tell you.

Lmao, so abyssal medusas are fine but geckos aren't.

NOT freaked out like "ugh gross", but more in the way that it took me by surprise. I wouldn't expect a animal that one often usually associates as a "garden critter" to be have such longevity. Freaking, in a good way lol
