I absolutely love creating my own species or rendition of a species within mythology, however I've always wanted to hear other people's tips and such when creating one so I can be organized about creating such a species. So, any hints or such for creature creating?
I'm always fond of species that were bred to fulfil a certain purpose, like how sheepdogs herd sheep, oxen and draft horses can pull heavy carts, etc. So maybe a species bred for companionship and its unique bioluminescent glow which can help people see in the dark? A tough-skinned rhino-like creature that can pull heavy loads without needing to stop for food or water like a camel?
Then once you have its main purpose, diet, habitat, etc. established, you can consider its appearance. A glowing companion animal could be small and furred like some common pets, or maybe it's tiny and mothlike and a popular pet for small children who are afraid of the dark. Maybe the rhino/camel thing has wide feet to spread out its weight and prevent it from sinking into snow or sand.

Get a science book, biology book.
Add a myhtology book,
Do the maths ( I like sci-fi or realistic creatures),
Have fun!
