Hey, is this for ONLY your own made up characters, or is it allowed to put up characters that have been created by others, like in a movie, series, anime or manga. Like InuYasha or Sesshomaru. Kyoya Ootori from Ouran high host club. That kind of characters, or is that completely forbidden?

I don't know if I'm much of a help here, but I'll try to say what I assume at least.
I've seen people creating other characters that are not originally theirs here before, but I guess the real purpose is for your own original characters. I don't know if it's exactly forbidden, but it's really not the thing this site aims for, I guess.
So if you want to play as any series character, you could always do that with your player account - characters here are really suggested to be your own as far as I know.

I just ask because that's also what fans do, create their own version of characters and play their story out as to what happened after the show. Like What happened to Harry when he grew up. Or what would the world look like if the one ring had not been destroyed by Frodo, but stolen and lost again by Gollum, or something like that. To make another side to a already created universe

Just want to chime in that 'just give credit' is not in accordance with the rules.

You can play fan characters and use their images if you have permission from the original creator: http://www.rprepository.com/help//site-rules#36

If you don't have permission then it's against the rules. If the content creator gets in touch with RPR and requests removal of your character for violating their copyrights, then you'll have to remove it. Repeat offenses lead to consequences for your account - it doesn't matter if it's on an anonymous or public character. (This also goes for any images you use on the site, period.)

Most companies that have trademarks and copyrights on characters are okay with fanfiction and using their images for personal use as long as you don't profit off of it, but it's your responsibility to double check that, if you RP cannon or fan-characters, the company you're taking this stuff from is okay with it.

Bottom line: RPR allows any characters, original and fan based, as long as it's legal for you to do so. You're responsible for making sure it's legal.

I see. Well I have no idea how to check it. Better not risk it then. I'll just do my own characters, and stay completely away from pictures all in all, that way I'm sure -nods

Usually the best way to check is to find out who owns the license/published the show you want to use characters from and go to their site. If they have a policy on using their content for non-profit use it's on the licensee's or publisher's site.

That said, we have a fair amount of players who freely RP cannon/fan characters and use pictures and resources - I don't know if anyone's ever had to remove their fan content though, or if they checked with the publishers etc. It's up to your own discretion and how comfortable you are with using their materials without knowing if it's okay or not.
