Oh jeez I think Zhi has been doing it longer. And she's probably written 5x as much even if not lol. My track record is awful. Only wins in 2005, 2011, and then 2013 onwards (started in 2004 and I think I skipped 2008 and 2010--I can't remember)
I'll also be in for this year again!
Though I never won, I did the thing in '13 '15 and '16 - but I'll be writing in German as every year.
I'm excited for it yet, there even will be several meetings in real life which I will attend to write

I've done it uhhh..... 10 times? I think. Won every year. After my first couple times I started going over the min and finishing well before the deadline.
My longest was 120k-ish, done in 18 days, (two years ago)
my fastest as far as average word count per day was last year 100k in 9 days
my fastest finish time was 5 (technically 4 and a half days) but I did the bare min, like, just a few hundred words over 50k, which was the weird angel story I did the year before I started writing Merin

I know, right! Zhi is A BEAST.
Can I adopt you all as my new role models? You're inspiring me!
GUYS TWO MORE DAYS HOLY SNAPPLE!!! 33 hrs and 28 minutes left!!!!
I usually work in fanfic for NaNo (because I'm nowhere near ready to untangle the mess that is my original work right now). I have a few ideas that I'd love to work on but nothing's really 'clicked' yet. Considering the date I'm more than a little concerned.
I'm a planned pantser. I throw together a loose idea of an outline and fill it in as I can... It doesn't usually work out, since about halfway through any scene my brain usually throws a curveball. But it's fun and I get a lot of world-building and character development done.
As for suggestions... maybe pick a setting and write some short stories for it? Urban legends? Monster ladies?

I just checked. I'm up to 10K in planning notes alone. I think I'm about as ready as I'm going to be!
I'm a Plantser too; half planned, half pantsing.
Kadokatt; I recommend binging some of your favorite shows, if you're doing fanfic; watching or rewatching might spark something!
I always find original work so much easier, but everyone operates differently! I wish you the best in finding a good fanfic idea that clicks!
Dray; holy nuggets dude, that's intense

I can't fly as a pantser, man--if I don't have my gridwork to build off of I tend to crash and burn. I wish I had more help for those who aren't sure where to start... maybe spend tonight gathering every story nugget you've been saving and make a list of 30 to flesh out? Then spend at least one day per story nugget even if you don't finish it?
That way you get a bit of the planning (something concrete to write every day) and a bit of the pantsing (you can swap between story bits if you're not feeling one, but if you DO stick to one for more than one day, it means you have more options to pull from the next day)...
I might do that one year when I've finally finished the project JKat and I are working on together.

I'm trying to remember how many times I've truly pantsed, and I thiiink it wad only once, in 2009. But after 35k I met Redbeard so I never finished It was a cute little story nugget though, if juvenile! But even when I plan, I don't write more than a thousand words of prep. I just caaaan't.
I vary on how many notes I have, from just a little to a good bit, but I usually get worried that if I make too many notes, things will get too rigid and it will be harder for me to write. I like to just let the story flow from my fingertips instead of thinking 'okay I gotta get from point A to point B, then to point C," etc.
Hello my fellow Wrimos!
I just read on the official NaNo-Site that this year's Region Word War was announced to be Denver / Germany. And since I'm in Germany, I'd be curious to know if anybody here is writing in Denver?
Sooo~ regardless of where you are - in my time zone it's only a bit more than 2 hours left until November starts and I'm reallly excited!
I'm wishing you all the best each any every one who takes the challenge I hope you have loads of fun!

Oh nice! Where have you been to? I'm in the South and have ever been, though moving to other cities is a constant part of my life But only ever around Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria!
I'm half-happy and half-scared, but totally excited for NaNo. All has been building up so much inside me in the last few days, I hope that it all comes bubbling out after midnight and won't get stuck -- the ultimate horror would be, that I can't even write a single word from all inside my head down after the countdown. But I guess, I'll then start with a funny phrase or something and go on from that... this worked in 2015 very well! The first word of my novel from then was and still is (!): "scrambled eggs"

Hi everyone! Participating in NaNo this year too. I've decided to finish the first draft of this project before the year ends so... fingers crossed! Also, I've been helping out as a ML in my region (EXCITING).
I think I would define myself as a plantser as well. I believe in making flexible outlines that tell me where I need to go, but not so detailed that there's little room for deviation or outright change.
