When I was a kid, one of my favourite games was X-COM (they made a whole series but the first two are the ones I remember fondly). The idea is you control the organisation tasked with saving the world from an alien invasion.
You managed your base, equipped your troops, decided what captured alien technology to research next. It wasn't just a game where you shoot the aliens, it made you feel like you really were fighting a war. After each mission, your soldier's stats would improve, they could be renamed (my friends and I always named them after ourselves). When one of them dies, it's a big loss, not just tactically but you get attached to your people.
Next week, at long last, they are releasing a new one. It is a remake of the first, something that worried me but after trying the demo and getting a chance to play the multiplayer mode at Eurogamer last week, I am convinced they are going to do a good job. This is a big part of my childhood and I can't wait!

At first I thought it was one of those boring tact games where you don't see any action. Not for me.
Then I saw the trailer and now I want it. o_o

I'm not familiar with this game series, but the trailer alone looks amazing and makes me want to go out and buy this game!
Here's a guy talking about the original.
The second game is more or less identical, except the alien threat is from underwater instead of space.

I've never been able to play the originals (though not from lack of trying, from lack of a decent comp), but I've been positively giddy with excitement about this since I heard about it. A condition that worsens as the release date draws near. Definitely gonna have to pick it up the day it comes out.
I never did play the original. But oh my god I want this game so bad. I've had it preordered for ages WHY ISN'T IT THE TENTH YET?! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go and pace up and down outside my local gamestop for four days.
The original can be found on Steam. I imagine they'll put a special offer on the complete series pack the weekend the new game comes out.

I fondly remember staying up laaaate into the night one night when my power was out watching my housemate play the original. That was a good night!
I can't help but think that these alien style games are going to be more popular in the next 6 months when "Ender's Game" comes out in theatres around March 15th.
I might have to look into getting it, depending on what gaming system it comes out for.

I didn't realise the Ender's Game movie had finally been made. It's been rumored for years!
XCOM is for PC, 360 and PS3. I had hoped they might rerelease the original games for iOS and Android.
