I think everyone's dropped good starter links--if you've read those, you'll have a good grounding for getting into RP.
The only other things I can think of is that you can be as picky as you want with what kind of threads you want to write. Depending on how much time you have, it might be fun to take on a whole bunch of new threads to try out, or you might want to dip your toes in the water with one or two to see where they go.

I say to keep an open mind. Don't limit yourself if you don't want to. The more you branch out the better the roleplay experience. At least that's how it is for me.
