The town was silent.
This was strange; there was no creak of wooden wheels on the cobblestone, no rustling of fabric as merchants packed up their wares to head home from the market, no scurrying of rats or howling of stray dogs. No footsteps. Not even the rush of wind.
It was dead silent.
Flannery was hidden deep in a crevice, shivering even though the sun was warm and bright. He had somehow fit himself into a large crack in the wall of a tavern that faced a narrow alleyway, and he intended on staying there until he knew it was safe, biting his lip until it bled and shivering shivering shivering.
It was silent, and he was sure no one else was even alive. The absence of sound, although he had oft wished for it amongst rowdy crowds or a thunderous storm, seemed to weigh down on his ears, and he started to miss the little clicks and clacks of life in a town.
He had only just gotten to this one, called Hurnwild'r, this morning, and everything was fine then. People were rushing about, doing their business and talking to neighbours, enjoying the sun as they strolled through the market in the main square. Everything had been just as Flannery had expected it to be, and he let himself blend in to the dozens of people milling about, hiding his pointed, furry ears and swishing tail as best he could. He had wanted to enjoy a pleasant afternoon shopping for what little he could, then maybe settle down in any old kitchen or fireplace an inn owner could spare for a nap, until the time came to move on to the next town.
But his plans had, unfortunately, been crushed into dust.
He took a deep breath, trying hard as he could to remain quiet and undetectable, and unbent his limbs from the odd position they were in. He unfolded himself from the crack in the wall, and bent down, staying as close to the ground as he could. He knew he wasn't safe yet, and his heart was beating a million miles a minute, screaming at him to stop and stay where he was- but he knew his best bet at real safety was trying to escape the oppressive bubble the town had been enveloped in, and try to make it to the next village over.
