I only noticed this this morning. When I open a chat window, the post chime volume is all the way down. I've turned it up and found no difference, and if I reopen a chat window, the volume is again reset to the minimum.

Sorry you're having these problems! Can you tell us what browser you're using, the device (mobile or desktop/laptop) and whether or not you have any plugins installed?

Firefox just updated this morning, so perhaps that's the cause. I'll fiddle around a bit when I can to see if the browser is the source. the volume setting was working great Wednesday, and it works on my phone's chrome browser.

This is probably worth submitting a bug report over! I can't look into it just this moment, but it'll keep it pinned on my to-do list if it goes into the bug reports.

I've honestly noticed this for a long time in vanilla-as-can-be Chrome as well. Very randomly will give the cha-chick sound. I've checked my sound settings, restarted my computer, restarted chrome, refreshed a half million times, turned stuff off, turned stuff on, and it continues to be super sporadic.
To be clear, when I say "a long time", I mean a year or more as well. Honestly always kinda thought it was just me.

The noise is still produced via flash; more and more devices don't come with flash pre-installed these days. Others still won't let you have flash even if you specifically try to install it. And the ones that do are getting less and less reliable about it - the sporadic behavior of it failing even when the chat volume is up I suspect is related to flash crashing.

We need to migrate to more modern methods for sure, but I haven't been able to get to it yet.

That sounds like a different problem than the chat muting itself, however.

must be the flash issue, yes. It just happened to me too. Most browsers disable flash per default nowadays

After reverting my Firefox, it seems that flash is indeed the issue. For now, my sound has returned.
