Amy jumped away from him the minute they were where they needed to be. She disengaged her armor and paced for a couple of seconds frantically.
Why now?! She was terrified. She couldn't, wouldn't go back to Russia, she would kill herself before they ever got the chance to touch her again. Her eyes were welled with tears that she wouldn't let fall, her head spinning with horrible thoughts and memories. God she needed a drink.

Red finally got most of the armor off/out of Austin, and now began to clean the wounds. The boy's leg was in pretty bad shape, as well as his back, and left hand. Red was a medic in the field once. He could do simple procedures to help stop pain for a little while. "Isn't there a medbay in this bunker?"

"Medbay door opening." Said a robotic female voice, and suddenly Austin was dematerialized. Nobody panicked, because of their previous experience with teleportation, materialization, and SET technology in general. With Austin being taken care of (hopefully) for the moment, Red turned around to see Amy pacing. Arrow had taken off his armor, and Red decided to follow suit.

"Amy, everything okay with you?" Asked Red, which earned a warning look from Arrow that could only mean "Leave it alone."

She eventually settled into a corner, sliding into a sitting position, her head buried in her knees. She did not answer Red.

Red shrugged, realizing how tough things could be for her. He was a little shaken up himself, but he didn't want to show that. No, he had to be tough for his team. Honestly, though he was surprised that the "Ice Queen" had shown any emotion at all. She was so distant, and barely talked. This softer side of her was new to him, and more than a little surprising. He tried to see if there was anything else this bunker had to offer.

"Is there some kind of training room in this joint?"

The same robot-like female voice spoke once more.

"Training room door opening." Red dematerialized within seconds.

Arrow sat down next to Amy, leaning against the wall. Hey. Those guys won't be able to find us in a million years. This bunker is like Fort Knox. Besides, Rex will take care of us. He promised us before we split up that he would make sure that they could never touch us. He's somewhere close by, probably whooping John's ass as we speak. He hoped to get a smile out of the emotionally rattled girl.

Amy didn't lift her head. There was no way in hell she would let any of them see that the tears she'd been holding back, had begun to fall.

maybe your right She thought finally, placing it in his mind, though she wasn't sure she believed it.

Knowing of Amy's tendency to reject physical contact, Arrow merely sat next to her, trying to be comforting without being invasive. He's smart. He's outsmarted them once, right? That's how we escaped. He was able to help us get out of there in the first place. He wouldn't just abandon us. He promised he'd never let them hurt us again. The belief of a fifteen year old kid, not a twenty-year old man. Rex had been trying to fight the scientists, but he was slowly being subdued. The Experiments were getting stronger, and Rex wasn't getting younger. He wasn't the god-like Superman that Arrow and Amy had looked up to when they were trudging through the icy tundra. He wasn't some unkillable god that just snapped his fingers and caused people to run in terror. Arrow firmly believed that Rex was, however.

After a few minutes of everyone trying to figure out what to do, Austin rematerialized. He looked dazed, but other than a splint on his left leg, he looked fine.

"Hey, guys. The, um... Bunker? I guess the bunker is the AI around here. Anyway, the bunker's medical bay injected me with some nanobots, so I should be healed much quicker than I normally would. I feel kind of tingly inside, but I'm getting used to it."

Amy desperately wanted to believe what he was saying, but she wasn't so sure. She was acutely aware that even Rex had limitations. She didn't want to dash his hopes though, and so she kept her doubts to herself.

Amy eventually looked up, just slightly when Austin reentered the room. She simply wanted to see that he'd been patched up. Satisfied he had been, she returned to the way she had been.

"So will you guys end up like Jack then? Since you were hurt by the infection?"

Austin was slightly alarmed by Amy's remark. "I don't think so... As far as I know, Jack was- Is infected because the thing got into his bloodstream. I was hurt, but I don't think it stabbed me, or broke through the armor more than twisting my leg, and breaking my arm off." Speaking of, Austin's arm had been replaced. It looked natural enough, just like it had before. How was it possible to imitate muscle, and skin like that? Arrow had never seen anything like it.
Austin's position that Jack was still alive was obvious and adamant. He didn't want to believe that their leader, whom they had grown so close to, could just be gone.

Red appeared shortly afterward, looking flustered. "What are we going to do? Wait for them to leave? We've got two different forces on our tails, most likely working together to ensure our demise. We can't go out in public because we're criminals, and our previous base of operations is housing a gigantic creature with the intention of crushing us and drinking our bone marrow."

"Wait, how are we criminals?"

"You didn't know? Important news that may concern us appears in the helmet visors every once in a while. I got a news flash while I was in combat sim. This is all set up. We need some kind of.. Of plan. Going out there without one would be suicide."

Amy let out a small sigh. It seemed that anything they could do now would be suicide. How were they going to do this? Without a leader, against these horrible people.

Next morning was a mess. Austin expected to wake up and find himself back in the space ship in the sky, with Jack whooping his ass to get out of bed, because all of the other cadets were up, and he needed to get in there and put on his armor for PT training STAT or he was going to have to work extra.

Red was angry as hell. He didn't leave his dorm until later in the day.

Arrow didn't sleep. He was starting to have doubts about his hero. How did John find them? Was Rex even really still there? Still protecting them? Or was that a memory Arrow had clung onto for far too long?

Breakfast was toast and eggs, but Austin was the only one to eat. Even then it was only because of how hungry he was- Nano bots used a lot of food.

Amy didn't sleep at all either, afraid of the nightmares that would come when she closed her eyes. Even awake though, all she was were flashes of operating tables, and surgical implements, and torture, and bad,bad men.

A light rapping came at Amy's door. It's me.

Upon the door's opening, if indeed it was opened, Arrow would look badly shaken up. His eyes looked worried, and anxious, like he'd seen a ghost. We got a.. A transmission.

What kind of transmission? She asked. Looking weary and scared. Her complexion a little paler then normal, her eyes bloodshot from a night spent awake.

Arrow held a tablet in his hands, and he walked inside the dorm to sit on Amy's bed. Jack's final command. He thought to the girl grimly.

Once Amy had sat down next to him, Arrow would tap the screen, and Jack's face would appear. He was scared, and he was holding a pistol. His voice would sound odd, as if one moment he was speaking normally, and the next a monster was speaking through him.

"Hey, team. I'm sorry for letting you down. I know what's happened, and I am truly sorry. I should have seen it sooner, but I didn't, and now it's too late. It'll come back to take me, any minute now, and I'll be under its control again.

"Austin is team leader. I officially promote you to rank, as I resign my position. I'm counting on you to lead the team to victory, and to achieve the objective. Red, I want you to obey Austin's orders. No matter what. No arguing. What the team needs... Is unity. Amy, I know things are probably tough for you, with your background. I need you to be strong, and try to stay a part of the team. Arrow, do the same.

"I've seen the news reports. I know what everyone thinks. I know it was probably the Cyborgs. As my final order, I command you, SET Cyborg Recovery Squad of the US Military, to stay a team, no matter what happens. You are brothers, and sisters. I'm proud to have trained you to do what you're going to have to do now. Thank you."

Jack looked solemnly at the camera before putting the gun to his head, and then shutting the camera off.

Amy choked back a sob at the realization of what he'd done. She, much like Austin, had been working under the assumption they could cure him somehow. This was obviously not the case. At least not any longer.

The next few days were spent in silence for the poor boy. His leader, and perhaps mentor, was the closest thing he had to a father figure. That man was his hero, the last remaining member of the greatest military project on Earth- No, the universe, and he was forced to go out by way of suicide. He freaking killed himself, so that the Infection couldn't spread through him. I should never have left him. We should have stayed behind until we could find a solution to his problem!

Red felt disappointed as well. The team was in disarray. Ice Queen was starting to get into the habit of mental breakdowns, while Mr. Refuse-to-talk simply didn't seem to care about anything. Jack was dead, and now their new leader seemed so shaken up by that fact that he was in no condition to lead. This isn't a team. This is a group of people thrown together because of special talents. Most of them are identical. We can all take down an enemy. Now that Jack's not here to hold us together, it's only a matter of time before this totally backfires. The only thing holding us together now is the fact that we're fugitives.

Nobody talked, or interacted at all, besides Amy and Arrow's private conversations. Eventually, Austin called them all together.

"Alright, guys. I've been thinking about that transmission, and what happened the other day... I've decided we have to complete the mission. Defeating John and his freakshow will at least allow Jack to not have died for nothing. Are we all ready to form a plan, and act like a team?"

Amy wasn't doing so well herself, horridly vivid nightmares of a now wide variety plagued her each night, and afforded her next to no sleep, She avoided the others like they were diseased, coming out only when necessary and otherwise staying holed up in her room.

She of course had joined them when Austin had called them together. The idea of going up against John was terrifying to her. I don't think I can do this Only Arrow would hear that.

"I know... I know that this is going to be tough. But, we're a team, right? We stick together, no matter what, and support each other. And even though we might not be perfect, we are the best people for the job. I don't think this is about just destroying a failed project anymore. I want you all to know that.. That I'm here for you. That I'm ready to support you, and to help you. I hope we can all count on each other to do the same."

Red nodded solemnly, and Arrow agreed. Don't tell yourself things like that. If we can do it, then we're going to do it. And if we can't, it's not like we have much choice other than to try. Fleeing isn't an option anymore.

Another voice faintly echoed in Amy's mind as well.


No one can defeat us... We are power. We are eternal. A failed attempt at recreating some great team will do nothing to stop us. The energy master has led us this far, and he will lead us further still. We will become the dominant race... More powerful than any group of humans.

Austin thought for a moment before speaking again. "So, I have an idea for a plan. What if we went back out there in disguise? Or possibly invisible? Our active camo seemed to work fine the first day. We could scout out what we're up against, and then regroup here to formulate a new plan." The boy looked around at the group, as if asking them if they thought it was a good idea or not.

Amy visibly jumped at the sound of the other voice, her hands clamped over her ears, though of course it would do nothing. How could they be in her head, even now? Even she couldn't project that far, were they close?

She got to her feet, looking around frantically.

We are close now, yes... Very close to the precious stronghold. We will overwhelm them with our might. We will reclaim what is ours, and slay those who oppose us. No mere human will be allowed to live.

Everyone took notice of Amy's sudden change in posture.

"You okay there, Amy?" Austin asked. Only Arrow really knew or thought he knew what was happening. Of course, he thought she was having another nightmare, but in reality she was hearing the voice of The Shadow.

Arrow walked slowly over to Amy, in case she needed to be calmed again.
