You’re idly making your way home after a long day of work or schooling. You’re so tired, it feels like you’re practically dragging yourself home. The last of the sunsets collection of beautiful colors is fading from the sky, leaving it in an inky twilight. The street lamps that line the road wash it in a pale yellow. All seems still and settled in for the night, only the distant sound of cars and the buzzing of insects disturbing the silence.
Home is just down the next street, you’re so close. You’re walking past the local bakery shop, the sugar smells still wafting out even though it was closed for the night. You’re thinking about your favorite, delicious treat when suddenly your thoughts are interrupted by a tremendous clatter coming from the alley beside the bakery, sounding as if something had toppled over the garbage cans. Perhaps you pause, perhaps you squint your eyes into the shadow filled alley to investigate. No movement could be seen within.
When you continue on walking, a flash of movement would catch the corner of your eye and a thick shrub beside the sidewalk you were strolling on would tremble and shudder. Maybe just a raccoon or some small animal...?
“Psssssssssst...” A hushed, strange sounding voice beckoned. “Pssst!” It came again, a bit more curtly. The voice was odd in that it sounded as if there were subtle notes of something like wind chimes under the words.
Even more peculiar than the voice, was the face that poked a teensy bit from the shrub’s leaves. The skin was pale, but appeared to be iridescent in the way that some places on the face appeared to be shimmery and a pale purple hue. Patches on the forehead, cheek bones, chin, and the bridge of the nose were the most iridescent, almost appearing to be scale-like. Hairless brow bones curved roundly down into a semi-flat and wide, feline-esque nose that ends in a cute, button tip. Both sides of the flat-ish bridge of the nose were lined with three golden studs, with a golden hoop hanging from the septum. Round eyes stood out the most, all cloudy white and reflecting like a cat’s, with very long, silvery-lilac eyelashes lining them.
“Hey!” The creature called again, in a hushed tone.

Tian had been on her way home from college, the strap of her book bag held tightly in her hands across her chest. She looked down as she walked, careful to not step on any cracks in the concrete. Her mind was far away when a whispering pulled her out of her thoughts. She instantly felt nervous, her aversion to people strong.
When she realized the sound was coming from the shrub, she couldn't resist her own curiosity. She looked left and right to make sure nobody was watching her before peering into the bush. When she saw the face inside she let out an alarmed squeak.
"What are you?!" she demanded reflexively, her voice strained quiet so as not to draw attention.

(Welcome to RPR! Glad to have you here and even more glad my post has caught your interest!)
A giggle that resembled the jiggling of bells echoed through the empty street, emanating from the shrub. Whatever it was, it was obviously amused by Tian's alarmed cry. The strange face disappeared briefly back into the shrub, but appeared again soon after, brandishing a large grin that was made up of shark-like teeth.
"I am Kenji Omari. You are Tian Wei, correct?" The voice from the shrub chimed, the sound really rather lovely. "Where are you walking to, Tian Wei?"

Tian went stiff, her stance rigid and the grip on her bag’s strap white-knuckled. With eyebrows raised and eyes wide, she swallowed hard. “I... I’m going home...”
She took half a step back, her gaze not knowing where to settle on the other’s face. The rational part of her said it must be costume make-up, but she couldn’t help but wonder. “How do you know who I am? Did we... have a class together?”

The being seemed to be teeming with bubbly amusement by Tian’s uncertainty.
“I know many things, Miss Wei. It was how I was created to be.” The strange looking being answered, with another little jiggly giggle. Her face then disappeared very briefly again.
When it reappeared through the thick leaves of the shrub, she said, “I have something to show you, Tian Wei. Will you come with me?” A hand reached out through the dark leaves, held gently open to be grasped.

Tian was torn between rational and fanciful. This had to be a joke; someone with too much time and too much makeup on her hands. The stranger could easily be harboring ill intentions.
However, Tian had spent too many afternoons in the local library growing up to not want to follow. She had been imagining her own fairytale for years, which is why she wordlessly pried her hand off the strap of her bag and placed shaky fingers into the other’s grip.

Kenji’s eyes widened with obvious excitement, reflecting the light of the street lamps like a cat’s. Her hand clasped around Tian’s and tugged gently. Tian would be able to feel herself being pulled through twigs and leaves. Yet, Tian would not find herself inside a shrub next to the sidewalk. Instead, a forest would be before her, towering trees stretching in every which way.
It smelt of warm honey and the sound of bird song would be echoing all around. Sun light streamed through the thick canopy, making the air look as if it were glimmering. Winged insects and strange, glowing golden orbs buzzed idly about the air, darting in and out of the tree tops. Thick, cushiony moss carpeted the forest floor.
The petite being stood beside Tian, wearing a very old looking, white summer dress that fell just above her knees. It was had some dirt, grass stains, and what appeared to be moss growing on it. Her long, lilac-y hair was messily braided in to thick sections, hanging down her chest. Her ears were pointed, but angled downwards, almost like a cows. Her ear lobes hung heavily, stretched wide with large, wooden rings.
“Tian Wei!” Kenji sang with delight. “Follow me!” She began bounding off into the trees on her dirty, bare feet.

Tian let out a sharp breath of surprise as she looked at the forest that was now around her. Her hand went right back to her bag's strap, clutching it like a lifeline. She turned to Kenji, jaw slack and eyes wide. This... couldn't be just a prank. Her eyes were drawn to the other's pointed ears and her mind supplied her with suggestions of elves and faeries.
When Kenji bounded off Tian let out a yelp. "Wait for me!" she called, dirty sneakers stepping deftly over foliage and rocks with experience gained from a life in the countryside. "What is this place? Where are we going?" She spoke with a fraction more confidence, feeling more comfortable in a forest than she ever would in town.

Kenji looked nothing but delighted about Tian's awed expression when she turned to look at the petite being.
The woods were full of the happy bird song, the buzzing of insects, and somewhere far off... a strange sounding melody being played by some unknown instrument. The glowing orbs of golden light seemed to take interest in Tian, bobbing along in the air after her and Kenji.
"Home!" Kenji called over her bare shoulder to Tian, answering both questions at once as she pranced over the underbrush, rocks, and logs on feet as graceful as a ballerina's. After only perhaps a minute more of running through thick forest, attracting the attention of some forest residents, suddenly the trees stopped. They were abruptly in a small clearing, in the center of which was a very, very old looking, little shack. It was covered almost completely in ivy, everywhere but the doorless doorway in the front. To the left side of the little shack was a garden of sorts, bursting at it's seams with a rainbow of wild flowers, strange yet delicious looking fruits, herbs, and some vegetables.
Many, many colorful butterflies fluttered all about the clearing, mostly hanging around the beautiful garden and tending to the flowers. The golden orbs that had followed them seemed to become excited, buzzing about the tree tops surrounding the clearing rather rapidly.
Kenji stood at the edge of the clearing with her little fists on her round hips, looking over her yard as if admiring it's beauty, though she saw it every single day. "This is my Dwelling, Tian Wei. What do you think of it?" Kenji chirped in a sing-song voice, the under notes of it sounding like soft chimes.

Tian felt her senses tingle with excitement as she followed through the forest. She wondered if this could all be a dream, for it was as if she had stepped right into a children's fairytale. She wasn't one to smile, but the sweet air and melodies in her ears relaxed her, and she couldn't help the small grin that found its way onto her face as she watched the golden orbs around them.
She stopped at the edge of the clearing, stopping to look at Kenji's little house. When she noticed all the butterflies she let out a gasp and rushed closer, her hands forgetting their nervous place on her bag's strap as she reached out towards the fluttering wings. "What do I think?" she repeated, a smile now wide on her face. "This must be some kind of afterlife."

Kenji strolled after Tian towards the little garden, where most of the butterflies were hanging out. They seemed to just notice the two in the clearing and began to flock over couple by couple, creating a bit of a swarm around them. They seemed particularly interested in Tian, some fluttering very close, then hurriedly moving away a few feet, as if they were curious but shy. Others though were much more out going, swooping in and hovering close to Tian, checking her out. A few would land if she was still enough or held her hands out for them.
Kenji giggled that curious sounding giggle, reaching one of her own hands out for a large, bright blue butterfly to land on her finger tips. "They like you. They say you're very beautiful." Kenji chimed. "We're very happy that you're here."
She glanced over her shoulder at the darting orbs in the tree tops, who seemed full of zeal. She knew though, that not all those who dwell in this sacred place would be pleased with what Kenji had done. Some of those beings that dwell here did not appreciate disturbances from the outside. Kenji's marble eyes shifted back to her guest, a big smile on her round, pale, purple hued face. "I bet you'd like something to drink. Some tea?" Kenji offered, wiggling her fingers and causing the large, blue butterfly to filter off.

Tian held her arms out, letting out a breathy giggle as a few butterflies landed on her fingers. She looked to Kenji like she couldn't believe it was happening. She blushed and looked away at the other girl's words, her cheeks turning a bright pink at the compliment. "T-They're very kind," she said, hoping she was the only one that could hear the spike in her own heartbeat.
The shy girl's gaze followed Kenji's when she looked to the glowing orbs, and she wanted to ask what they were, but the other had spoken first. She almost denied the offer on impulse, but reminded herself that there was nothing wrong with accepting things from others. "Tea would be wonderful," she replied with a slight smile.

Kenji smiled jubilantly at Tian's flushed face, thinking it was quite cute. "Wonderful! Come, come! Lets sit!" Kenji sang, beginning to prance towards the ivy layered shack. She gently shooed butterflies out of her path as she made her way.
The shack was only one, single room. The walls on both left and right sides were made of shelving, each shelf completely piled with stuff. From common human items such as eyeglasses, forks, and music boxes, to many, many books of all sizes, to large jars full of bubbling liquids, dried herbs, and even strange looking teeth. Against the wall opposite the doorway was a mattress on the floor, piled high with thick quilts and blankets. In the center of the single room was a short, wooden, round table. On top of the table was multiple books, one being a sketchbook flipped open to a page with an unfinished drawing of a peculiar looking deer creature. A porcelain, Victorian looking tea set took up most of the table.
Kenji took a seat on the ground at the table, crossing her legs indian style, then gesturing for Tian to take a seat across from her. She scooted a little dish full of blueberries towards Tian, their purple juices staining the white porcelain. Then, she grabbed the tea pot and tipped it over into a dainty, little teacup that was placed neatly on an equally dainty saucer. The liquid that came out was dark, dark purple and smelled very sweet, yet bubbly like carbonated drinks. It looked a bit thick and viscous as it streamed into the little teacup. She slid that across the little wooden table to Tian too, then began pouring her own cup.
"So, Tian, tell me some things." Kenji began, her clouded eyes glinting with mischief. "Tell me what farm life is like. Or what you do in your schooling."

Tian was hesitant to leave the butterflies, but followed after a moment, letting them flutter away before dropping her arms to her sides. Upon entering the shack she looked around with interest sparkling in her dark eyes. It was exactly how she imagined any fairytale house would look, with clutter that all seemed to whisper their magics. Before sitting down she pulled her bag over her head and set it down next to her, the heavy books inside making a thud.
She sat with her back straight and hands rested in her folded lap, obviously trying to be as polite as she could. She watched the odd liquid poor into the cup with a noticeable suspicion, but picked it up slowly when it was offered to her, anyways. She didn't take a sip yet, just letting the cup warm her hands.
"You want to know about me?" she asked, brows raised. "I'm not- You're the interesting one here! We're in a magical forest with glowing balls floating around, and you want to know about my classes? I don't even know how you know about that!"

Kenji smiled, amusement glowing warmly in her milky eyes. "Silly, you asked if I was a classmate of your's." She giggled, before raising her teacup to her lips and sipping from it. The strange, dark liquid would taste liked sweet, mulled wine and cinnamon, with hints of blueberry syrup, and felt carbonated on the tongue.
She set it carefully back upon it's saucer, and returned her gaze to Tian's face. "You may ask me anything you'd like, Miss Wei. Forgive me if it's rude that I began prodding about you, I am just curious. I'm sure you've got many questions of your own though." The fae girl chimed. Her eyes briefly flicked over to the bag, eyeing the slightly obstructed books inside. Oh, how this creature loved books. Anything she could get her hands on, she adored to read and hoard.

Tian looked down into her cup, her cheeks reddening as she realized she might have sounded rude by not answering the other's questions. She took a small sip of her tea and let out a pleasant hum at the complex taste. She set her cup down gently and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, looking back over at Kenji.
"I'm sorry, I'm just... taken aback, by all of this. One moment we're in town, and the next we're in this magical place! How did you even do that? I don't want to sound rude, but... what are you?"

Kenji’s polite smile only widened to an impish grin as she looked across the small table at her company. “I know this must be very much for you to comprehend. Well, I suppose to answer both of those questions, I am Fae.” Kenji explained, while reaching over to the shelving on her left and retrieving a pale blue, ceramic cookie jar. From within, she pulled a couple interesting looking treats out.
“I am sure you’ve seen the human lore about Fairies and such things?”
“I am sure you’ve seen the human lore about Fairies and such things?”
"A fae?" Tian repeated, eyes widening. She had a feeling it could be something like that from the other's pointed ears, but it was another thing to have it said aloud. "I've read about them, yes, but nothing more. There's plenty of folktales, but they aren't meant to be taken seriously."
She watched the other's movements carefully, like she expected Kenji to start laughing and admit to the whole thing being a joke. Tian recalled the more vicious fairytales she had read as a child and got visibly nervous. The sharpness of the other's teeth hadn't gone unnoticed. "Is it true that fae can't lie?" she asked, trying not to let any anxiety show in her voice.

Kenji looked across the small table at Tian with a pure type of gaiety, but an impish mischief glimmering in her clouded eyes. She gently shoo-ed away a butterfly that had fluttered in, hovering too close to Kenji's face for her liking, before taking a large bite of a colorful cookie looking treat.
"Well, its more so that we find lying to be without purpose. We haven't much reason to not be truthful. There are types of fae, faeries, and those of the goblin and imp type that enjoy twisting the truth for tricks or pranks. " Kenji explained around the mouthful of cookie.
Kenji's odd eyes picked up on the small mannerisms that Tian's nervousness displayed, and she cutely crinkled up her sort of feline-like nose bridge, while one of her pointed ears flicked in amusement.
"You need not to be afraid of me. I did not bring you here to cause you harm, quite the opposite truly. It can get dreadfully lonely here, all I seek is companionship. Butterflies and plants are not always the most intriguing conversationalists." Kenji assured, licking the remaining bits of crumb and frosting off her lips and teeth.
