i don't know if this post would go here or the smalltalk forum or what, but i felt like it would be fun to talk about the original versions of characters just to see how far they've come lmao
amelia: she's the oldest of my characters, i made her back when i was 12 and her original canon was about vampires taking over the world or something. i only recently made her related to elliot.
elliot: i made him back when i was 14, and his only purpose was to be Terrible. i was inspired by the song don’t mess with me by temposhark. he was a prince and all he really liked was his cat and torturing people and then i was like "he needs a friend" which leads us to,
jasper: literally i was just messing around on the rinmaru avatar creator game and i was like "oh no he's cute i'm going to make him a character" and he ended up being really friendly and i was like "elliot needs a friend" and it got very gay very quickly
damian: he's weird because i came up with the concept of a character who sees people as corpses with my friend when we were 14, but the original character i had for that idea stopped appealing to me so i just kinda stopped writing him. when i was 15 i officially made DamianTM, but he was completely different. he was really rude, hated his mom, and his power was something along the lines of "seeing when people get kidnapped and realizing it's not just weird dreams but it actually corresponds to missing person reports". i didn't really start caring about him or developing him until march-ish of this year.

I have this handy image I prepared earlier.
evan, who's no longer on here bc i'm trash, used to be White and loosely based off the looks of of what i found out was a Hetalia character Character,, like he was white with buzzed blonde hair it wasn't too great
Evan is now latinx/white with black hair and has looked like someone's 1950s business man dad since he was born
i cant even remember when or why he changed he just did
Kenneth was made solely for a romance plotline for someone's character. He was gonna be very barb-wire orientated but lmao, He also wore a vest bc he was Gay
Beck came along bc Greece needed a winged dad and bam

I love doing these, it's a great way to reflect on progress as a writer and an artist!
Here is my baby Raine who started out as the biggest marysue "I can do no wrong" overly cute girl-- into a flawed struggling woman who makes mistakes often and struggles to get through daily life sometimes. She is from 2004-2005
Old
New
Osirus
He started out many years ago as a dream(2005). He was my ladies man who always stole the girl and had heavy influences from Greed from FMA-- now he is dark skinned, gay and a seeker of justice. Oh, and human... before he was half demon for whatever reason.
Zayne
Still evil, just different kind of evil. And no more DBZ hair-- realistic hair!

Rick started as a Big Daddy from Bioshock. Then he became a Weapon X ripoff. Then I just kinda nickle and dimed changes on him until he was how he was now.
Rose started as generic hot demon lady in a cage. Then she was a magic gangster for a while. When I started getting more into D&D, then I kinda scaled up her intellect, gave her a more defined personality, scaled back the sex factor, and got rid of her guns.
Volker actually started as a cat lady named Izzy with a plasma sword. Then I gave her guns. Then I changed Izzy to a guy, changed the name, then added a sci-fi jungle background with an infusion of tribal spiritualism. The psionic additions were relatively recent, all things told.

i first created evelina, twig, saden, and callahan as cat characters named evelina, twig, alexa, and dove (callahan used to be a girl)
the basic story for them was that they were skilled warriors appointed as the queen's personal protectors, like their parents who were appointed as well before they retired; and turns out, the queen is corrupt and trash like that, and they go through a moral journey and soul searching while still going under her orders
here's an old as hell picture of them
basically everyone else i made were either old characters that had no story before/ they were some sort of mascot for me, or they were made up entirely just for this website

Oh wow, this looks hella fun.
So,
Ayuraime Sakusari was actually a self-insert character that I've had literally since I was like seven or eight. She used to be named Katrina Sakusari and the first time I created her she was a middle-school girl who was a ninja on the side
Though, she's vastly developed and grown alongside me to a point where she has her own personality now.
Kazune. Oh, Kazune. My favorite boi.
I've had him for just about as long as I've had Ayu, but I hadn't really developed him at all. He was just my awkward-but-adorable Gary Stu that I would use in all of my stories as Ayu's shipmate.
He never really got developed until about last year when I created my world of Veritae and gave him a role that was apart from Ayu entirely. But before Veritae, he sort of awkwardly adapted to all of my stories.
Isandor was actually an incarnation of Kazune, an elven hunter-mage that was a guard to the Princess Ayu. Though his character's personality is vastly different to how I eventually decided to create Kazune that I made Isandor his own person. I do have a running joke (and sometimes canon) that Kazune, Isandor, and Sakui are triplets.
Sakui was also an incarnation of Kazune. His original story is on the sci-fi versions tab on his page. His personality adheres slightly closer to Kazune, but his moral compass is different, which makes a great difference between them.
Arion and the Treasure Lamp are new concepts that began last year with the creation of Veritae. They haven't gone under much revamping.
Stallion is extremely new.

Ivy is definitely my oldest character that I have on here.
She started as two characters, Ivy, a woman whose story essentially started with her dying, and meeting a reaper named Gabriel, continuing on to help him destroy Lucifer. Plus a character named Willow, who was Lucifer's daughter. Both of them weren't very well planned out, I hadn't come up with much backstory for either of them. I eventually decided to push them together, and make one character out of Ivy, Lucifer's daughter with a more fleshed out backstory.
Zedai and Frankie are my two most in depth characters.
Zedai started as a mermaid shifter, with a past of destruction upon her kind, and is now a humanoid alien from the war ridden planet Maenali, with an aquatic second form to her species.
Frankie started as a young woman who could see the times in which everyone is going to die; but now is a reaper, after she died when she was a preteen, and was hand chosen by death to be brought back to life with the ability to see death dates, separate souls from bodies about to die, (or not about to die), and shred souls so they cannot pass on.
A character I am going to put on here soon, and I am also writing into a book, started as Jackson, a man who was a soldier in WW2, not on the good side either, and once day he died when he was betrayed by a group of soldiers that claimed they were trying to give him an out. He woke up later, to find he was a demon, and had killed a lot of people in a black out.
Now he is a she, and her name is Jacqueline/Jax. She's a half fire demon, who became a demon after her fiancee traded her soul to save the life of his mistress who was dying from childbirth. Jax killed the demon who came after her, but unfortunately in doing so, was cursed to live half his life. Therefore, becoming half a fire demon. She woke in the night, to see she had set a village ablaze. From the 1500's till present day, she works as a supernatural hunter.

Heh.
Kyra is one of my oldest characters, and probably the oldest one still in use. She was originally the daughter of a standard elf dude and a black human woman who were in exile for their relationship and who died in a vampire attack that Kyra lost memory of because a. it was that traumatic, b. she "died" falling over a waterfall, and c. she was pretty old and her memory had gotten faulty in general. As a vampire, she couldn't stand other vampires (because subconscious trauma), tried to only feed on animals, and had a necklace that protected her from the sun. Now she's a second-gen half elf from the desert who got warped in a magic incident and exiled after mindlessly attacking the remnants of her own tribe. She's a little tougher/less angsty (it's not gone, just better hidden), a little louder, and that magic incident actually left her messed up in ways that continue to hurt her (like an odd weakness to magic).
Nashyll and Novalyyn have been complete messes. (Yes, Novalyyn was a character, and predates Kyra.) Nashyll is the daughter of Novalyyn. A series of bad decisions (on my part) and some messiness with other players resulted in Novalyyn basically being a limitless shapeshifter prior to Nashyll's conception. More of the same resulted in Nashyll additionally having a body that was perpetually devouring and rebuilding itself, some dangerous rage issues, and just so freaking much self-loathing and fear. My first attempt at repairing her involved splitting her into two beings, whch can still be seen in her profile. I don't know how to play her since resetting her. But, because I didn't want to entirely get rid of their level of bizarre shapeshifting, Alchemy came into existence, completely removed from them.
Julian and Raven came from one-off short stories and I decided to RP with them. Julian has since turned out closeted gay, and Raven gets adjusted a lot, but not necessarily changed.
Sari was created to narrate Kyra's new origin, but I decided I really liked her character. As a peace-keeper sort and being so deeply involved with her tribe, though, she can be tricky to play with.
Gregor was created as an NPC to help progress someone else's plotline (as were some of the other characters in Misc). I got really attached to him really fast and made him a full-fledged character.
Jackson was originally a mystery even to me, sort of. He wasn't necessarily a particular kind of being, just some old evil thing. Intentionally. But I found some familiarity in a set of myths and decided to go with that as a loose base to ground him more.
And others have things and whatnot...

Oh boy..I'll just use my main boy.
Drake Blade is my first and oldest character and one I'm always gonna use. Originally I planned him to be Naruto-esque? I guess..He mostly raised himself and was just straight 'I'm gonna be a HERO' ALL THE TIME. Yet somehow I made him an edge-lord. I always wanted him to be on the front lines but looking back at it now it's embarrassing for me lol.
Today, the Drake I currently use prefers to stay in the background and not to be noticed. He doesn't care about being a hero but he still likes helping people. In terms of emotions, he's no longer just all angst and anger and 'WE CAN DO ANYTHING' rather he's more realistic and tends to shy away from certain things that make him nervous or scared..Like a normal person I guess. Before I used to have Drake use a sword all the time, but this generation just uses his fists, or if I gave him his mechanical arm, fire magic.

Cynder here literally just used to be a pony version of the main antagonist from The Legend of Spyro: New Beginning. Never changed the name or color scheme, but other then that, she's evolved to be entirely her own character.
Colin's extremely weird, as he's sort of a fusion of two old characters of mine.
The first I nicknamed Taffy, and he was a crazy old man/radio host in a post apocalyptic future.
The second, named Callidon, was an incredibly racist knight who hated half breeds in a Dungeons and Dragons setting. A dose of paranoia, and Colin was born.

Omg mine are GLORIOUSLY terrible.
I have them somewhere still, for posterity hahah
Okay so,
I think the one most changed is Eoin.
He's a vampire, designed when I was like... 14? ish?
He was created as a sort of ridiculous character. He was a blind vampire with white hair with blue streaks for... reasons... and he had multiple personalities that switched randomly because "lol random?"
Over the years he'd been rejigged several times. I actually toyed with the idea of ditching several traits completely, like the personalities thing but in the end decided it was more of a challenge to try to make it work.
I like to challenge myself to maintain bad ideas and force them to work lol.
Kay was originally a druid, for... some reason. He wore robes and everything but never did any magic. I dunno man. He wrote everything down because he didn't talk (he still doesn't) but of course was telepathic so it was fiiiine. Oh and he could shape change and everyone knew this because he'd change forms randomly for no reason.
Also he was a werewolf.
I don't KNOW MAN.
He is still many of these things lol.
The druid thing was fleshed out into him being a member of a race called Hexenfolke who are a bit druidic in their beliefs but he's not really a particular follower of their beliefs, he refers to them as his "mother's beliefs" because he's extremely rational and has no time for superstitious nonsense.
He's still mute but now he has a reason. he's an elective mute due to massive trauma in his backstory.
He's also still a "werewolf" but he's not a werewolf, he's "infected" with a blood borne disease that drives most people nuts and was designed to lock shape changers into one form and drive them to tear one another apart (mmm bio weapons). He's fine so long as he avoids full moons, silver and viruses (his immune system is SHOT)
And he still shape changes but it's horribly painful because he's half a race who are basically human and they really aren't designed to change shapes.
You can kinda tell he was an old character revamped because there's SO MUCH rammed in there. Kid me clearly thought more was more lol. But I do enjoy playing him, he's changed a lot since his first incarnations where his main purpose was to make snarky remarks every so often.
I shall dig out old bios for you to read and laugh at if you like. They are pretty dire.

Ohgod... I found one of the oldest ones and it's more painful and terrible than I remember. Clearly at the age of like 12-14 I thought I was a great comedian.
*headdesk*
Okay so this (be warned it IS painful) is Eoin's original bio:
Full name: Llantharr (yeah I have no idea why his original name was weird. I renamed him a while back because it was dumb)
surname: Johnson (not sure why his surname changed either, go figure)
nickname: Llan
Age: 17 (nope, he's 16. Weird)
Species: Vampire
occupation: Bard, Singer of silly songs, player of any instrument he can get hold of (ahahaha no)
Hair color: White/blond
Eye color: left eye green, right eye blue
Distinguishing features: Large fangs, odd colored eyes, is blind (due to and unfortunate incident involving a bassoon, a flute and a large thunder storm) - (SEE WHAT I MEAN!???)
Weapons: Guitar, a range of musical instruments, a recorder (AHHHH), A large 4000 pg. music book
https://www.rprepository.com/site.php?char=99687&page=227570 this is his current bio for comparison.
Yeah.
I can't recall at what point the horribly disfigured thing started, it was fairly early on. I have early art where he has no scars and then about a year or two in I started to draw the scarring but the "accident" cause changed because I decided burns made the most sense for the look I was going for.
I even found old art!
I never throw things away lol.
- this is like 2001? maybe 2002?
- What even IS this? lol.
And this is 2008 which is about the point where his character was fleshed out enough for me to consider him a character and not an embarrassment hah.
Man I haven't drawn so many characters in so long. *lazy*
Anyway hope you enjoyed this blast from the distant past haha.
My more recent characters are a lot less embarrassing, though they all start out as very vague ideas too.
Some start out as a challenge "I bet you can't make x kind of character" or "Man I could do that trope/cliche better!", some start out on whims because I want x sort of character for something. Some are npcs that take on a life of their own (Jarral is a great example of this)
A couple start out as jokes. Like Elias who was originally just a joke about time travelling vampires (of Mystery!) and ended up becoming a lot more than that.
And almost all of them start out as a doodle and then get fleshed out from there.
This for instance is my starting notes for an alien species I decided to create. I wanted plant people lol.
From this two characters were fleshed out.
These are the rough notes for my zombie character Arvel.
Not that you can read my really messy writing.
Basically I usually start by sketching up a design and writing info in the margins about details and ideas. Names, backstory, little snippets as they come to me get added in and once I think I have a good start I set about writing a bio which i'll go back to a few times and flesh out.
My desk is covered in scraps of paper with ideas scribbled on em heh.
